Question: Will Aamir Khan’s PK be able to beat the opening of Shahrukh Khan’s Happy New Year? – Suniel (Bangalore)
Answer: Highly unlikely. Shahrukh Khan has set the bar way too high for a film like PK to beat. Aamir Khan in an out-an-out action-masala-entertainer like Dhoom 3 would have been a different story. PK will definitely take a earth-shattering opening at multiplex in cities, but it doesn’t have too much going for it at smaller centres.
There are also reports that the makers won’t go for a release as wide as Happy New Year or Dhoom 3, meaning it could have limited single-screen release. Too early to confirm this though, a lot would depend on the response that the music and upcoming promos get.
To add to this, there is another big factor that will go against PK. The film releases on December 19, a working day. Given all the factors, it would be unfair to expect PK to break opening records, that too of a film that released on the day after Diwali.
Lifetime collections could be a completely different story. If PK manages to carry the kind of word-of-mouth that 3 Idiots did, it should go on to be the biggest grosser of all time.
