Udta Punjab has performed very well on its opening day at the box office. The film has collected Rs 10.05 crore on Friday, which is excellent for an adult-rated dark film.
The advantage of the controversy seems to be around 50%, as the film would’ve probably opened to around 6-6.5 crore even with excellent reviews to support it.
The film has performed at major cities. North India was excellent, with East Punjab circuit leading the race, followed by the NCR region. The other major cities were good too, while the smaller cities were ‘above par’ for a film like ‘Udta Punjab’. Apart from the controversy, the presence of Punjabi superstar Diljit Dosanjh has given a big boost to collections in North India.
The first day collections is exactly the same as Shahid Kapoor’s highest non-holiday opener R.. Rajkumar which collected 10.1 crore on its opening day. Shandaar is his highest, but it released on a national holiday and collected 13.1 crore. The advantage of a national holiday is about 35-40%. So clearly, Udta Punjab is higher than what Shaandaar would’ve collected on a working day.
As far as the highest opening days of 2016 is concerned, Udta Punjab makes it to the list at the 6th position. It’s the 5th highest Hindi opening of the year.

10.05 CR is a fantastic first day number . I was expecting anything from 8 to 9 CR . If it there was no piracy it would have done 11 CR+ . This is a positive start and I hope UP emerges to be a big success . I am planning to watch UP on Sunday nothing is fixed but I will try to watch tomorrow . Most of the critics have appreciated the movie and the weekend collections will determine what kind of impact it can make in the upcoming weeks . Tommy Singh is the most complex, difficult and unlikable roles in Hindi cinema but the brilliance of shahid kapoor makes him loveable.

Hrithik completely lived the character of Karan Shergill and it is one of the Best Performance in his Illustrious Career . The Cinematography, Direction, Screenplay and Dialogues all leave a great impact on you . It has gained Cult Status over the years and I am proud of Hrithik for being part of such a movie . Salute to all the Army Officers who are fighting in tough conditions and yet they are focused, determined and committed to do their job . This movie has inspired me and sometimes I see my reflection in Karan Shergill especially in the 1st half .

Movie wise it was a very different experience to watch it. Rarely I have seen a movie which is dark in nature and yet keeps you entertained throughout. Difficult to describe the relishing experience of watching this movie. Hats off to Abhishek and the entire UP team for making this movie happen. Excellent efforts for making a movie on such an important issue.
Performances wise it was such a pleasure to watch all the four actors doing an excellent job. All four were perfect in their roles. Alia deserves a special mention for her performance and she was simply brilliant. Shahid matched her too in brilliance and was no lesser than her for me. The entire sequence where they meet for the first time was too good. Kareena was excellent too and so was Diljit. Kareena continues to do amazing work and am very happy that she did this movie. All four were top notch for me.
Overall the movie leaves an everlasting impression on you. Abhishek was right when he said that this is not a movie to be forgotten easily. Writing it all this makes me want to watch the movie again which I will do soon.
