Happy New Year has topped the all time list of Top 25 highest opening day collections in Bollywood. This is the second consecutive time that a Shahrukh Khan starrer has managed to top the list, his previous release Chennai Express was also the highest opening day grosser last year.
Khan has proved yet again that when he decides to do an out-an-out commercial entertainer, he is right up there at the top as the industry’s biggest crowd-puller. Happy New Year didn’t have any chartbuster songs, the promo of the film didn’t get the kind of response that Kick or Bang Bang received, nor did the film belong to a big franchise like Dhoom or Krrish. Farah Khan too was battling negativity and comparisons with her husband Shirish Kunder and brother Sajid Khan.
No wonder then that both SRK and Farah were extremely pleased with the response that Happy New Year has got from the audience. Khan tweeted “Thank u world for the love. What an enormous welcome to HNY all over. I hope team HNY made you all smile a lot. As cheesy as it sounds, post collections, Farah Khan I think Life, Movies & other such essentials, do start after 40! HNY team lets go!”
Farah replied saying “SHAH feeling so much love for you I can cry”
With a huge star cast led by Shahrukh Khan, Happy New Year got a favourable release period, and made the most of it – recording the highest opening and single day collections in history.

You mentioned advantages other films had like buzz etc but you didn’t mention the level of Promotion…. After Ra. ONE, HNY is the most aggressively promoted movie….
If Kick, Bang Bang got huge responses to trailer HNY trailer was aggressively shared on social media, grand launch…
Btw Bang Bang had poorest promotion strategy & Kick had hardly one month Promotion…
If Farah being compared with hubby n bro is a disadvantage than Farah-SRK combo was an advantage which raised expectations….

@Indicine you pointed out many things you are amazing that’s why if King Khan decided to do a Masala movie no one can match to him that’s what we Srkians always talk about Ce broken almost all the records which are then recreated by Dhoom 3 and guts nor the Ce or Hny are big franchises like Krissh or Dhoom just one reason King Khan that’s all.
Raees will break HNY record 50cr. Opening day….

So its a proven fact now that if SRK would do a masala film he can also manage to put huge numbers on BO and in that he has a slight edge on others as well. That’s what I was telling since beginning that please don’t judge the stardom, bad phase bla bla bla with the number of collections. You can’t expect a record breaking collections from movies like MNIK and JTHJ. And I can bet that if SRK would do five masala entertainers consecutively, all of them would be BB/ATBB without any doubt.
I’m sure that his next two biggies Fan and Raees will be intense and they may have some off beat content like MNIK or swades and those movies won’t collect that much as what CE and HNY did. But again we can’t question the stardom of SRK based on that.
Funda is simple – if you will do something off the trend, a debacle is inevitable. The most recent examples are Talaash and Jai Ho.
Now a days Bollywood is trending around masala entertainers , and Salman’s back to back blockbusters, Amir’s and SRK’s success with these genres prove the same.
So I’m requesting the fans of all three khans that don’t boast that we have five blockbusters or we have highest grossers. It’s all about the trend and if any of them will do that, no one is less than others.
