Top 15 Bollywood Actors in India – November 2014

The last time we ranked the Top 15 stars in the industry, Salman Khan and Aamir Khan were ranked right at the top. That has changed after the release of two big films like Bang Bang and Happy New Year. The bottom of the list has changed a little too.

We have decided to make our ranking system the most comprehensive in the industry. We will be analysing the box office collections of the Top 15 actors. The ranking system will also be divided into three; Top Actor in India, Overseas and Worldwide. The list below is for the Top 15 Actors in India i.e the domestic market only.

  • The list would be based on the net box office collections of an actor’s last five movies. For younger actors, the minimum number of films is 3.
  • Only lead roles would be considered. Cameos, special appearances and guest appearances won’t be taken under consideration. Non-commercial and art films like ‘Dhobi Ghat’ have also not been considered.
  • Dated movies that released before 2007 have not been considered.
  • Only domestic box office collections is being taken into account. Collections from all regional versions have been taken into considering as this list is for the top actors in India and regional language releases affect Hindi business in their respective states. For example, Tamil version will affect business of Hindi version in Tamilnadu / Kerala circuit.

Top Actors In Bollywood

Salman Khan Actor

Salman Khan – Kick (234 cr), Jai Ho (112 cr), Dabangg 2 (160 cr), Ek Tha Tiger (199 cr), Bodyguard (141 cr)
Salman Khan Total Movie Collections: 846 crore (Average per film: 169.2 cr)

Rank 1. The average collections of Salman Khan’s last five films has gone up from 152 cr to nearly 170 crore per film! The superstar is quite clearly way ahead of the competition in the domestic markets and has dominated the box office in India like no other actor in the history of Indian Cinema. Salman now has one 200 crore grosser (nearly two because Ek Tha Tiger collected 199 cr). His success ratio is incredible too  - all his films since Dabangg (2010) have done well. His blockbuster ratio is even better – 6 out of 7 films have been blockbusters or all time blockbusters!

Shahrukh Khan Actor

Shahrukh Khan – Happy New Year (205 cr), Chennai Express (227 crore), Jab Tak Hai Jaan (122 cr), Don 2 (112 cr), Ra. One (125 cr)
Shahrukh Khan Total Movie Collections: 791 crore (Average per film: 158.2 cr)

Rank 2. Happy New Year had to collect Rs 260 crore or more for Shahrukh Khan to topple Salman Khan right at the top of the list. The film ended up with lifetime collections of around 205 crore (still running), enough to ensure that he goes past Aamir Khan at the domestic box office. SRK also became the first actor to deliver two back-to-back 200 crore grossers. His average per film has also significantly risen from 131 to 158.2 crore. The superstar’s forthcoming releases are Maneesh Sharma’s Fan and Rahul Dholakia’s Raees.

Aamir Khan Actor

Aamir Khan – Dhoom 3 (283 cr), Talaash (90 cr), 3 Idiots (202 cr), Ghajini (115 cr), Taare Zameen Par (63 cr)
Aamir Khan Total Movie Collections: 753 cr (Average per film: 150.6 cr)

Rank 3. Aamir Khan is ranked at No 3, not because his films have performed badly, but because he does very few films. Since we take the last 5 films into account, his fifth last release is Taare Zameen Par which released in theatres in 2007. He could take the top spot if Rajkumar Hirani’s PK collects 157 cr or more, and will most certainly reclaim his second spot from Shahrukh Khan. No actor has come close to Salman in India in the last three years, but Aamir has every chance of taking the top spot by the end of 2014. PK releases in theatres on December 19 2014.

Akshay Kumar Actor

Hrithik Roshan – Bang Bang (181 cr), Krrish 3 (244 cr), Agneepath (120 cr), Zindagi Naa Milegi Dobara (90 cr), Guzaarish (30 cr)
Hrithik Roshan Total Movie Collections: 665 cr (Average per film: 133 cr)

Rank 4. The release of Bang Bang temporarily took Hrithik ahead of SRK at the domestic box office, but before Bang Bang finished its run, Happy New Year had already released in theatres. Hrithik’s average of 133 cr is fantastic, comparable to the Khans even though he doesn’t always get to release his films during Eid, Diwali or Christmas. To elaborate a little more on this, out of the last 5 films, all SRK films have released during one of the three festivals, except Jai Ho all Salman films have released during the three most lucrative periods in the industry and Aamir Khan too has preferred to release his films during Christmas (all except Talaash). Hrithik got just one Diwali release for Krrish 3 and made the most of it. He will be missing from action in 2015, as his next release is Ashutosh Gowariker’s Mohenjodaro (Jan 2016).

Ranbir Kapoor Actor

Ranbir Kapoor – Besharam (59 cr), Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (189 cr), Barfi! (110 cr), Rockstar (68 cr), Anjaana Anjaani (40 cr)
Ranbir Kapoor Total Movie Collections: 466 cr (Average per film: 93.2 cr)

Rank 5. Besharam was expected to take a good start at the box office and it did, what with the film collecting close to Rs 20 crore on its opening day. But the response was so bad that the film ended with lifetime business of less than 60 crore. It was arguably the worst received biggie of the year, as even a film like Himmatwala held up better over the weekend. If he has to beat Hrithik, his next film would have to collect Rs 239 crore!

Rank 6: Action Jackson has to collect Rs 118 crore or more for Ajay Devgn to go past Ranbir Kapoor and make it to the Top 5 for the first time in his career. His decision to opt for masala-entertainers over hard-hitting class-oriented films has paid rich dividends as the actor has a much larger audience base in the last few years. Action Jackson releases in the first week of December.

  • Singham Returns (139 cr)
  • Satyagraha (62 cr)
  • Himmatwala (45 cr)
  • Son of Sardaar (102 cr)
  • Bol Bachchan (101 cr)
  • Forthcoming film: Action Jackson
  • Total: 449 cr (Average per film: 89.8 cr)

Rank 7 Akshay Kumar: He does more than 3 films every year, yet averages 76 cr per film. Akshay has films like Gabbar, Singh Is Bling and Warrior which could take him to the Top 5. So far, he was competing with Ajay Devgn for the 6th spot, but the latter has overtaken him with the release of Singham Returns. Do note that ‘The Shaukeens’ didn’t feature Akshay Kumar in the lead.

  • Entertainment – 72 cr
  • Holiday: A Solider Is Never Off Duty – 113 cr
  • Boss – 59 cr
  • Once Upon Ay Time In Mumbaai Dobaara – 63 cr
  • Special 26 – 69 cr
  • Fortchoming film: Gabbar
  • Total Collections: 376 cr (Average per film: 75.2 cr)

Rank 8 Sidharth Malhotra: Quickly emerging as one of the most popular stars in the country, Sidharth Malhotra commands a huge following on social media websites like Twitter and Facebook. His last release, Ek Villain, was a huge success at the box office. He deserves credit even though the presence of Mohit Suri as director, Ritiesh Deshmukh and chartbuster music helped big time.

  • Ek Villain - 103 cr
  • Hasee Toh Phasee - 35 cr
  • Student Of The Year - 70 cr
  • Forthcoming film - Bhavesh Joshi
  • Total Collections – 208 cr (Average per film: 69.3 cr)

Rank 9 Varun Dhawan: We said it after Main Tera Hero, we say it again. Varun is one of the most promising stars in the industry, a superstar in the making. In just 3 films, he has established himself in the industry. A film like Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, released 2 weeks before Salman Khan’s Kick and during the Ramadan period, has collected nearly 80 cr at the domestic box office. Huge!

  • Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania – 77 cr
  • Main Tera Hero - 54 cr
  • Student Of The Year - 70 cr
  • Forthcoming film: Badlapur
  • Total Collections – 201 cr (Average per film: 67 cr)

Rank 10 John Abraham: John is no longer a solo star. Multi-starrers like Race 2 and Housefull 2 are his biggest grossers. In an ensemble star cast like the upcoming Welcome Back, he is still a force to be reckoned with.

  • Madras Café - 45 cr
  • Shootout at Wadala - 62 cr
  • I, Me aur Main - 9 cr
  • Race 2 - 102 cr
  • Housefull 2 - 114 cr
  • Forthcoming film - Welcome Back
  • Total Collections – 332 cr (Average per film: 66.4 cr)

Rank 11 Saif Ali Khan: Fairly popular with audience in big cities, but has absolutely no following in smaller towns. He has been consistent over the years, but relies too heavily on other factors like trailer, music and director to bring audience to theatres.

  • Humshakals - 63 cr
  • Bullet Raja- 36 cr
  • Race 2 - 102 cr
  • Cocktail - 76 cr
  • Agent Vinod - 45 cr
  • Forthcoming film - Happy Ending
  • Total - 322 cr (Average per film: 64.4 cr)

Rank 12 Arjun Kapoor: The box office performance of an off-beat film like Finding Fanny hasn’t affected his standing in the industry. He could drop down a position in the list after Ranveer’s Kill Dil finishes its run, but Tevar should do him good. The film has received a positive response in the trade and should open very well at mass centres.

  • Finding Fanny –  cr
  • 2 States - 102 cr
  • Gunday - 78 cr
  • Aurangzeb - 23 cr
  • Ishaqzaade - 49 cr
  • Forthcoming film - Tevar
  • Total Collections – 287 cr (Average per film: 57.4 cr)

Rank 13 Ranveer Singh: The poor opening of Kill Dil could affect him, but it should also take Ranveer higher up the list. The film needs to collect 66 crore for Ranveer to beat Saif Ali Khan and rank at No 11. He would make it to the Top 10 if Kill Dill collects 76 crore or more.

  • Gunday – 78 cr
  • Ram Leela - 109 cr
  • Lootera - 31 cr
  • Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl - 38 cr
  • Band Baaja Baaraat - 24 cr
  • Forthcoming film - Kill Dil
  • Total Collections - 280 cr (Average per film: 56 cr)

Rank 14 Shahid Kapoor: The critically and commercial success of Haider has helped Shahid Kapoor go one spot up in the ranking. He sneaks ahead of Emraan Hashmi.

  • Haider – 58 cr
  • R.. Rajkumar - 65 cr
  • Phata Poster Nikhla Hero - 39 cr
  • Teri Meri Kahaani - 29 cr
  • Mausam - 33 cr
  • Forthcoming film - Shaandar
  • Total Collections – 224 cr (Average per film: 44.8 cr)

Rank 15 Emraan Hashmi: The disastrous performance of Raja Natwarlal at the box office earlier this year has pushed Emraan right to the bottom of the list. He awaits the release of Dharma Productions’ Ungli which is the last release of November 2014.

  • Raja Natwarlal – 27 cr
  • Ghanchakkar - 39 cr
  • Ek Thi Daayan - 27 cr
  • Jannat 2 - 54 cr
  • Raaz 3 - 74 cr
  • Forthcoming film - Ungli
  • Total collections - 221 cr (Average per film: 44.2 cr)

Even after 20 plus years, the Khans – Salman, Aamir, SRK – still dominate the industry and are by far the most dependable stars. Hrithik has always been in the Top 5 since he made his debut in 2000. He temporarily took the top spot in 2006, but was pushed back after the release of Kites and Guzaarish. Ranbir is the most popular actor amongst the newer bunch of actors who made their debut after 2006. The likes of Ranveer, Varun, Sidharth and Arjun are the stars to watch out for in the future. Akshay and Ajay will continue to churn out 3-4 films every year. Akshay has a strong lineup, Ajay has Rohit Shetty!

The list will be updated after the release of Happy Ending, Ungli, Action Jackson and PK.

We will also be publishing the ‘Top Bollywood Actors in the overseas markets’ and also the worldwide ranking.

  • @Ajay sucks, YRF and Dharma took him as he had star power unlike akki and ur ajay and acting talent unlike lallu. and FYI SRK made Aditiya chopra and Karan Johar big directors as DDLJ and KKHH were their debut films. So dont talk crap. SRK made YRF and Dharma into powerhouses they are today. Karan would never take akki or salman since they dont have good dramatic acting talent and never take ajay between 1998 -2009 as he was flop actor. So YRF and Dharma took SRK as he was the best combo of star box office puller and actor in that period.

  • @Suniel, I agree that SRK has more fan following than Ajay but Ajay Devgan is far more better actor and person than Shahrukh Khan. If they were to do a film together I am sure Ajay Devgan’s acting would far better stand out than Shahrukh as Ajay is a very good intense actor.

And all those movies you mentioned were not big successful except OSO, Devdas ( was a remake) and Chenai express was a Rohit shetty film.

So The bottom line is without these movies (YRF and Dharma) successes, perhaps superstar SRK would never have been.

And for Ajay sir The main reason that he has no more fan following is for not being media friendly despite being popular in almost all the corners of India.

  • @indicine, SR producer figure is 141cr not 139cr. You double standard K3 collection you take producer figure but not for SR. WHY? Why??

  • I think @opinion nipun is liar because he said i’m prepare for exam. @Nipun’s calculator made from Manipulationarpur of Jadoo Planet. So he can’t calculate properly. Now hr no.1 only for me. Hr better than all actors of bollywood this is my opinion. Thanks indicine for this great article.

  • @Shri, thanks. @Sani D, dude Iam enjoying your comments. it’s neat, carry on writing like that.
    I Really appreciate your comments.

  • @Romance, so why are you visit indicine site? I take verdicts from indicine site coz i visit indicine site. You double standard your crap hny 178cr only not 205. If you take boi verdicts then you also want to take boi collection.

  • @indicine: I’m sorry but I’m not agree with you (probably for the first time since I started visiting your website). What is the logic behind exempting a movie, in which Amir had a full fledged role, by naming it as art film?? I don’t know what is your criteria of calling a movie an “Art” film but if that is the case, then why Guzaarish is in the list?? I don’t know how to define art films, but Guzaarish was not a commercial film for sure. And why only Guzaarish, remove Barfi, TZP, MNIK too. And if we follow the same criteria then kindly stop calling “Paheli” as SRK’s past failure because if “Dhobi Ghat” can be considered as Art, then so is Paheli!!
Sometimes you write an article based on your choice your comfort, which is not fair. Stop twisting the facts. No one is stopping you to exempt “Dhobi Ghat” from the list, but the same should be applicable for other movies as well, specially the one who lacked of commercial appeal.

    • @Goutam, we believe the comparison would be unfair if we include Dhobi Ghat in the list. It didn’t get the kind of release that a big film gets, was made on a very low budget and it was a Prateik Babbar film. You can’t compare it to Guzaarish.

  • Lol! People talk about the star power of a n actor who can’t deliver an unusual hit. Whenever this so called superstar does something offbeat, his movies bomb at the box office. He should stick to stretching his arms and romancing 20 year olds.

Offbeat cinema is for Aamir Khan. Talaash and Dhobhighat are clean hits. While TZP is a blockbuster.

  • @Ajay fans

Kindly ignore our superstar and his fans. They talk about collections when their star makes a crap. When their star fails at box office, they talk about the critical acclaim.

I’m an Aamir ihan fan. But I openly admit, dhoom 3 was a dumb movie. No fan of our so called superstar has the guts to admit that his last 5 movies were outrageously silly and stupid.

  • @indicine
u posted ajay record without rohit shetty.
Now i dare u to post record of sid-varun,arjun,ranbir without yrf/dharma……
Ps- rockstar is not a hit. If u count rockstar, wake up sid as hits, then count dtbhj , aksar , shanghai also hits!

  • @indicine u should include budget of the movies to list the top actors.because if a movie made on 200 crore earned 230 crore it is not a big achivement, but the lead actor get high jump on ur list.example is ra one.

  • @suchit

I think you’re being too harsh on Akki. He is soft-spoken, never talks bad about any actor, and he himself is a big admirer of Aamir. Why call him D grade? His movies are average but he doesn’t capture all the TV channels and bombards viewers with promotional gimmicks like our so called super star,

He is surviving in this industry for 20 years without the support of YRF and Johars. P.S. Even I’m an Aamir fan, but I have absolutely nothing against Hrithik, Salman, Ajay and Akshay!

  • Every star has his set of fans, but our so called super star has special category of fans. They say, “Our star delivers hits in all genres.”

Fun fact is, he is doing the same mainstream masala for 5 years, yet his fans ‘think’ those were different genres. I admire Salman because he doesn’t fake his fans that he is doing offbeat cinema. What you see is what you get. But our superstar trolls his fans every Diwali.

  • @nipun I wasn’t thought ever you are so immature with your analysis, Aamir last three films total is 283+90+202=575 cr.
so highest of all the actor. He has 2 holiday releases and one is back in 2009 when except him not a single actor crossed 100 cr mark.
If we take your all last 3 list, hr had all of 3 having holiday with their releases. All of 3 were either remakes or sequals that is second point and all of 3 were mass appealing films, Salman also had 2 holiday releases among last 3. So as Aamir while srk had all 3 full fledged holiday films. Though I believe in trade figure but for your analysis I am using Indicine figure.
Agneepath released on Thursday on 26 the Jan collected 21.5 cr that day which was national holiday and its weekend was 67cr (4 days) if film had 3 days weekend than its collection would be around 52-55 cr.
Agneepath wasn’t most trended film also as it collected 82-83cr in first week and lifetime ended with 40cr so for a better trending film which we supposed to a non holiday accepted film than trending should be like that lifetime should be 80-100% or more if films were liked
Znmd 1st week-43 cr lifetime -90 cr double than first week.
Singham 49 cr weekend lifetime 100cr again double.
Salman’s ready 68cr first week, 121 cr lifetime 70% more than first week so good trending films is like this whom you supposed to non holiday.
Now Agnipath if it had normal weekend I.e 1 holiday Sunday and first week it would collected 68cr same liked ready and would finish under 110cr surely with this trending.
K3 was a holiday release and there is nothing to discuss about them.
Now bang bang argubly the best release date a film had ever got in last 2-3 years, a national holiday on 2 nd Oct consecutive holidays till 6th,if we consider all the clash and other negative factors still films has solid 3 days holiday weekend like CE or hny, so it collected 100cr in 5 days like CE or hny did in 3 days. Kick. Collected 100cr in 5 days too but it effected pre eid time but even if it had holiday weekend its 5 days collection would be 120-125cr.Hrithik enjoyed holiday advantages in his las 3 releases and no one can deny that fact neither you nor Indicine. Case closed.

  • Agree with every point mentioned above by @sani d,ajay rocks, can’t stop laughing on @neeraj and @suniel comments.
Indicine if I go through your theory than I think we should say same about every actor for example you should don’t expect that srk will cross mnik figure in overseas until he back by aadi or kjo.
Srk achieved highest grosser nark in overseas with film like ddlj,kank,kkhh,k3g,vz,mnik. And he still struggling with his last 5 release to do so.so we should accept that comment with fan film as this time srk might cross mnik after all it has yrf release.
    Srk blockbusters.
KA,Kkhh,ddlj,k3g all 4 he paired with kajol.
    Rnbdj,cdi both were yrf ventures.
Oso,ce-deepika so it means srk which has 4 bb till cdi release in 2007 because he had Kajol.
Or now with CE as it had deepika.
Fact is every pair having some luck factors together whether its srk-yrf or srk-dharma.
    Salman-sooraj.
    Salman-anees bazmi.
    Ajay-rohit
And if we back in history than big b-prakash mrhra and big b-manmohsn Desai.
    It happens with all.

  • Correct list is
Srk 26 hits in last 22 years (all central characte)

Salman 21 hits in 25 years (5 out 21 were side kick role , sajan, Jeet, HSSH, bagbhan, no entry)

Amir 11 hits in 26 years (all central charcter)

To all salman fans if salman is such a big star of last 5 years why his jai ho not collected as much as srk bad movie ra1 which released 3 years

  • @ajay rocks calm down
If u excludes yrf, dharma, Rohit shetty movie from srk list still srk has more hit superhit than ajay with inclusion of Rohit tatty film
Deewana, bazigar, Karan Arjun, pardes, devdas, chalte chalte, main hoon na, don, oso, ra1, don2, HNY
Now don’t come and say remove farah khan and farhan akhtar movies from thel list like yrf, dharma, Rohit shetty

U r saying srk movies outside yrf, dharma are less successful. Just see above list
    Mhn second highest
    Oso top grosser
    Devdas top grosser
    Ra1- second highest
    Don2 – 4 th highest
    Deewana- second highest
    HNY- 3rd highest
    Pardes- 4th highest grosser
Now do ur home work for ajays movie including Rohit tatty movies. Srk standard is so high that his dispite 200 cr HNY terms as underperformer while singham return is highest grosser for ajay on 150 cr
    Overseas is out of question

Now count ajays success including Rohit tatty
Phool aur kathe, jigar, dilwale, pyar to hona hi tha, golmal, golmal return, golmal3, SOS, rajnithi, Bol bachan, singham and singham return

  • @suchit ghajini was a masala film with pretty decent content so i wouldn’t call that a poor script. and dhoom3 was so big mostly due to the brand factor. I’d like to see amir’s PK collect 3/4ths of dhoom 3’s opening weekend (80+cr) to even call him a superstar. trust me, it won’t happen. if aamir was such a big star, then his talaash should have easily crossed 100cr. SRK’s raone in 2011 which was outright rejected managed to collect past 100cr and so did salman’s jai ho which was rejected collected over 100cr so aamir is way below SRK and salman in terms of stardom. and out of those two, even you know who can act better. which proves my point that SRK is a star and an actor.

  • So a fan of our super star commented, “It is Srk who made YRF and Johar.”

I have fairly admired his choices till 2010 but saying that Srk made YRF is one of the most ridiculous comment one can ever post. Yash Chopra has given so many blockbusters with BigB that his name will ensure a hit tag even today. Take a fairly decent movie like Band Baja Barat. The movie had above average story (like many Srk blockbusters) and was marketed aggressively by YRF. Result – Super Hit!

If you look at YRF, only terrible movie like Daawat e Ishq or Beewakoofiyan have bombed at boxoffice. All other movies are either, semi hit, hit, superhit or blockbusters!

  • SRK has always had Farah, Karan, Aditya Chopra etc. He is a star – not an actor. Can you imagine him in Tere naam, Guzaarish, Haider or working with any other director. HNY was absolute nonsense but did very well – what does that tell you about the tastes of the audience. Give them quality and they will reject it.

  • @sht
    Good reply man
Haters say Srk can deliver hit without yrf, dharma, rohit shetty, farah khan, farhan akhter, kajol,Red chillies, deepika, excel ..so they want to exclude all films associated with these people ……Wah re wah…..Now after months they will say Srk can deliver hit without Illeana ……
Haters you must admire the person who can give Blockbuster with Farah Khan….
Now its my turn Amir cant deliver a hit without Hirani,Yrf,remake,Darsheel safari,Omprakash Mehra….
    Salman cant deliver a hit without a remake,yrf,Sonakshi ,David dhawan,Aneez Bazmi,Sooraj Barjatya,Prabhu Deva…..
So discussion closed by this logic no one can deliver a hit on his own…..people come to cinema after reading yrf, dharma ,on the banners and to watch sonakshi in cinema
