Tamasha has under-performed on its opening day at the box office. The film has collected Rs 10.87 crore on Friday, which is the 11th highest opening day of 2015. The opening day of Tamasha is lower than Hollywood films like ‘Fast and Furious 7’ and ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’.
The trailer and music received a mixed response, but given the fact that the film was directed by Imtiaz Ali (Jab We Met, Rockstar) and featured big stars like Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone in the lead, Tamasha was expected to take a better start at the box office.
Unfortunately, Tamasha has only worked at metro city multiplexes. At smaller cities and towns, the occupancy was low throughout the day. Business at single-screens was pretty much a washout on Day 1. A wise decision by the makers to give the film a very limited single-screen release.
The fate of Tamasha will be dependent on how it performs on Saturday. A big growth of 30-40% would ensure a 40 crore plus opening weekend, giving the film a decent chance of recovering costs.
At centres we tracked on Saturday morning, the growth hasn’t come. In fact, at a few centres, the morning show occupancy was lower than Friday. Evening / night shows will be crucial.
Ranbir Kapoor’s fan-following has dropped after 3 back-to-back debacles in the form of ‘Besharam’, ‘Roy’ and ‘Bombay Velvet’. If ‘Tamasha’ under performs at the box office, his career slump will be comparable to Hrithik Roshan after the success of ‘Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai’. Ironically, Ranbir hit the peak of his career with ’Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ and since then it has been a free fall.
With the much-delayed ‘Jagga Jasoos’ scheduled to release next, Ranbir and his fans would be hoping that the film with Rajkumar Hirani goes on floors as soon as possible.
