Ajay Devgn’s Shivaay was one of the biggest releases of the year. The box office expectations from the film, soon after the release of the theatrical trailer, were immense. It was expected to get somewhere close to Ajay’s highest career grosser ‘Singham Returns’ and also maintain a comfortable lead over the other Diwali release ‘Ae Dil Hai Mushkil’.
However, that wasn’t to be as the Karan Johar directed film maintained a healthy lead right from the first day of release, including on the big Diwali holiday on its first Monday.
For a film made on a budget of Rs 110 crore – including print and marketing, but excluding Ajay’s acting / direction fee, Shivaay had to collect somewhere around 125 crore to cover the costs of the distributors.
For a section of the trade that is calling the film an ‘average’ grosser, even Shah Rukh Khan’s FAN, which was made at approximately the same costs and distributed worldwide by Yash Raj Films themselves – made more money than Shivaay. While Shivaay will earn a little more from the domestic box office, FAN grossed about 6-7 times more at the overseas box office.
Every single investor, whether it’s the producer (Ajay Devgn) or the domestic distributors will end up in the red – more so if distributors have to be compensated for the losses.
The trend was good and the film sustained well in Week 2, but the level of business over the first few days was too low for Shivaay to have any chance of recovering costs. The problem was the multiplex business, which was poor throughout.

One & only “Jellous or Min Minded” actor(AD) in our Indian Cinema…..
Ajay Devgn(AD) is totally ‘Jellous’ abt any other Bollywood Actor..
Bcoz, Raj Kapoor(RK) was ‘Jellous’ abt any Bengali Actor(Tollywood)..
He(RK) did not want any Bengali Actor ‘sign or achieve’ in Bollywood..
