Salman Khan, the most bankable star in the industry today, started his career with Sooraj Barjatya’s Maine Pyaar Kiya which remains one of the biggest hits of his career. Barjatya was also instrumental in giving Salman a film like Hum Aapke Hain Kaun one of the biggest blockbusters in the history of Indian Cinema.
Some of his other hits in the 90s are Baaghi, Saajan, Karan Arjun, Jeet, Judwaa, Biwi No 1, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya.
It was after Hum Saath Saath Hain in 1999 that Salman’s career began to nose-dive. In the next 5 years (2000 – 2004), Khan had only two hits – Baghban (special appearance) and Mujshe Shaadi Karogi (multi-starrer). Tere Naam and Garv did reasonably good business.
Between 2005 and 2009, Salman had a few massively successful films like Partner and No Entry, but most of his films like Jaan-e-mann, Baabul, Salaam-e-Ishq, Yuvvraaj, Marigold – just to name a few – sank without a trace at the box office.
The biggest turning point in Salman’s career came when Prabhu Deva’s Wanted (2009) bought back the single-screen audience to theatres. Post the success of Wanted, Salman began to take his career more seriously, stopped doing films as favours to some of his friends in the industry and signed films that targeted both the single-screen and multiplex audience.
Dabangg released in 2010 and went on to break all possible box office records – the opening day, weekend and first week record of 3 Idiots. Ready was the biggest non-holiday grosser of all time. Bodyguard surpassed all records set by Dabangg only a year ago and Ek Tha Tiger almost joined the 200 crore club.
As things stand today, Salman Khan holds several records and is the undisputed ‘king’ of the domestic box office.
- Most 100 crore grossers (5 films)
- Most back-to-back blockbusters (5 films)
- Highest single day collections (Ek Tha Tiger 32.92 cr)
- Highest opening day collections (Ek Tha Tiger 32.92 cr)

srk rule bollywood last 20 yrs…..nobody beat him.
srk rocks
salman is enjoying the best phase of his career…..
Salman’s films whether hit or flop, too me he is god on screen.
Nyce article @Idicine but u forgot one of his story idea films CHandramukhi which I enjoyed when I was a young teen. Pls correct ur facts and figures pls
@ Indicine: We watched KKHH only due SK and he has also won Film Fare award for the best supporting actor. How you can remove KKHH. He had pivotal role in 2nd half and the climax. And maximum whistles in KKHH came on the Sajan Ji Ghar Aaye song. Even Karan Johar admits SK was pivotal to the film.
Agree, in OSO, SK had guest appearnce, but again I saw the film only due to him.
In kkhh SRK and Rani Mukherjee play selfish roles. Rani inspite of knowing Kajol loves SRK more than her never tells a word to SRK. Poor Anjali she sacrifices.
In the end the guy who never bothered trying to contact his best friend for 8 years sees her in indian- girlish attire and falls for her and expects her to marry him. That means Rahul goes by dressing sense of a girl. Poor sakman sacrifices in the end.
That sacrifice is very important. Don’t forget that.
SRK fans don’t want Billu to be included in SRK list because it’s a flop. They want kkhh to be removed because it would add to Salman’s list of attbbs which hurts them.
When SRK film fails they say he’s tried to experiment
When SK film fails it’s due to poor acting.
Inspite of SRK films becoming flops he’s got Filmfare awards which Salman and Aamir didn’t get
Everyone in Bollywood is biased towards him. That’s the reason he gets awards. NOT FIR HIS ACTING SKILLS. He’s got awards for good acting less number of times
Guys you should think success ratio can’t make a superstar there is some thing more.u can see in early 90’s Govida gave lots of hit movies but u know now you can’t call him a superstar but salmankhan is we all know there are lot of stars who have better success ratio than SK but salmankhan has fans craze that very few stars have got so everybody excepts that he was a superstar n will be a true superstar of all time
why they remove kuch2 hota hai from the list if they will ……then they will also have to remove heroes,hello,sallam-e-ishq,baabul & many more from the list…..all srk fan jalte hai salman ki success se…
Where are those people who had said Salman had given 40 flops. Dont they learned math in their schools? The list shows how roller coaster his career has been but the most important point is everytime he was down and critics considered him as out of race he stormed back with bang. Yes, he had some rough patches in his career but finally have conquered Box office and proved his power!!!!!!!!
I would say It was Aamir who brought single screen audience with Ghajini success but Salman consolidated it by Wanted. So credit goes to both Aamir and Salman for bringing back huge collection trends at Box office. We have another Khan who was doing movies only for overseas and multiplex audiences until he realized and coming up with a b@gus masala CE!!!!!!
@ Sillu: Where is Billu? And where is Dulha Mil Gaya?
@INDICINE
BAGHBAAN & KKHH are not films of Salman. He just did guest appearances in that films.Similarly,ETT is not an ATBB film.It is just a BB.His ATBB films like MPK & HAHK were multistarrers.
kurban was hit film
good as we c in last 4 years he was amazing and we should appreciate his hard working.
salam shahrukh amir ranbir ajay akshey and many others are the identity of bollywood and the people of india should appreciate all of them instead of saying and using bad words against other actors. all indian people should add this to their culture and make the bollywood even bigger.
such actors like sir bachan salman srk amir ranbir and many more are the base of a highly standed flag(india).
hb from afghanistan
@ hb – well said, but you see people don’t respect what is their own and go ga ga over anything foreign……hence we have many fakes who praise garbage movies from hollywood, and anything over the top here they pull down and mock it.
ghar ki murgi daal barabar.
I may not like salman much personallyy .. but 1 thing i must admit .. he is the one whose every movie though i find average .. i go to cinema hall .. he is the one .. who rules each and evreyones heart.
u may say .. SRK has achieved what salman can nevr. but the reality is that salman is achieving the stardom but srk can nevr .. nevrr achieve so much of popularity among the masses that comprise around 70 % of indian publicc ..
thuss , saying that salman is not a good actor by srkians is damn lie .. he satisfies 70% people with his each and every moviee. that is what i think is amazingg !!
still all actors are great .. mine fav. may be aamir khan .. but sal-man is our superheroo
Thats called stardom…
I am not India but I can believe to see how crazy his fans are ???
Means ” i can’t “
If…..

Salman is the real king of bollywood
@sillu : Your analysis are silly like your id !!!!
salman khan is no 1 today that is the reality! It was salman’s appearnce in KUCH KUCH HAUTA HAI after which the film took a turnaround & if not 100% share then around 15-20% goes to his credit as well in making the film an ALL TIME BLOCKBUSTER
Salman Has 49 flops ,plz chek it
@indicine why you are keeping flop tag on salman’s head for that movies he has just a guest appearance or multi starrer. biwi ho to aisi, AAA, Yeh Majhdhaar, Hello brother, Chal mere bhai, phir milenge, babul, salam e ishq, jaaneman, sawaria, hello, heroes, yuvvraaj, main aur mrs khanna, London dreams. if u calculate atleast 10 movies should not be in the name of salman. according to you his success ratio is 45% but if you remove atleast 10 movies. his success ratio will more than any other actor in the industry. and please tell me what will be the success ratio if u remove atleast 10 movies. last but not the least people who thinks hahk, hssh were ATBB only just because of salman. please revise your calculation by removing atleast 10 movies from the list.
VEER & hello are a disaster not above average & ektha tiger collected 198 cr only not 199.6 its blockbuster but not all time hit !!!
Salman has first of all lots of Criminal cases on him like hit and run, animal killing property disputes, threatening vivek oberoi, beating aishwarya rai etc etc the list is endless. I see here lots of people are comparing Salman with SRK and Aamir but the problem is salman is not a human being whereas Aamir and SRK are normal human beings comparing Salman with not only SRK or Aamir in fact anybody is an insult to human beings itself.
Salman should be compared with criminals.
But this is india and indians are damn emotional. Even after Sanjay Dutt was sentenced jail for his involvement in 1993 mumbai blast people watched his policegiri movie.
These criminals should be banned in fact they should be put behind bars if people watch their movies in numbers then these criminals use these money to blast the country and kill common man.
These are no less than terrorist.
Don’t mix personal life with his professional life. He’s a superstar. No one is asking a detailed report of Salman Khan’s personal life. Comments are required abt the analysis and not him
hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii i realy like u and movies god b u
@indicine Kuch Kuch Hota Hai is SRK’s film…salman has done special apperamce in that…please correct this…KKHH should not be included in this list…i hope you people correct this
KKHH is salman’s film..what a joke..shame on u admin
we want this article to be revised and published again
Salman & Sohail’s Blockbuster Jodi is back with AZAD after All Time Blockbuster success of Auzar & Main Aur Mrs Khana.
yes his wast 5 movies are blockbuster, but with only 1 movie SRK -“Chennai Express” beat all of them…and Salman more flops than SRK and not so many awards…..I’m sorry did Salman have FilmFare award ?No
Bajarangi bhaijaan is enough to blow away not the all time blockbuster but the all time overrated crap film Chennai express
Bajarangi bhaijaan is too too too good for shitty Chennai express
