The much-hyped box office clash between Rustom and Mohenjo Daro has turned out to be a damp squib at the box office, as one film – which was unfortunately the much bigger one when it comes to costs – couldn’t even put up a fight.
Rustom not only took a better opening, but the gap between the film and Hrithik Roshan starrer widened with each passing day. It started with a difference of around 60% and increased to 70% over the weekend. Weekdays onwards, Rustom was running at 2-3 times the collections of Mohenjo Daro.
The end result? A film that was made on a 100 plus crore budget will finish with net box office collections of less than 60 crore. In fact, the worldwide gross (including theatre share and taxes) will not cross the amount that was invested into the film.

Rustom on the other hand will be hugely profitable. In fact, it’ll be the most profitable Akshay Kumar film since Rowdy Rathore and OMG! Oh My God (extended special appearance). A well-planned marketing strategy, clever decision to clash and Akshay’s growing truth amongst the city audience, has all ensured that the film over-performed at the box office – exceeding even the limitations of the genre and appeal that the film holds.
While Rustom is one of the biggest successes of Akshay’s career, Mohenjo Daro will be the biggest loss making film for Hrithik.

This has been a pretty one sided clash and this was not something which I expected before the release of both the movies . Mohenjo Daro has failed badly and Rustom has performed above all the expectations . I never thought Rustom will beat H2, H3 and Holiday . Also I never thought MD will wrap under 60 CR . So in 16 years this has been the 1st Disaster for HR . MD is the biggest failure in his career but still it is much better than K3, Bang Bang and Kites . This failure will hurt HR, AG, UTV Motion Pictures and AGPPL . This is not the result Hrithik must have expected after investing more than year on this movie . But I am damn sure Hrithik will make a solid turnaround in Kaabil . By the way the trust Akshay gained by doing S26, OMG, Baby, Holiday and Airlift has benefited the collections of Rustom . !!!!!!!!!!

Baby,holiday marketed very badly otherwise there collection would be much higher.Rustom and airlift is well marketed film of Akshay after rowdy rathore.i think that Sanjay bhansali films and red chillies marketing is top notch.i want every Akshay films market at that level.

Anything can happen with a clash. Sometimes, the expected movie wins, e.g Don V Jaan E Mann. Sometimes the underdog wins, e.g Dilwale vs Bajirao.
About the upcoming clash, I think The Ring will win, but Akshay-Neeraj should not be taken lightly. After all, their last movie made a MASSIVE 83cr on a solo Republic Day release.
Without clash, both would have made better business. The clash has indeed created more hype for Rustom than MD. The bad execution of romantic story between Hrithik & Pooja, the average graphics and average trailer were the major factors of MD’s failure. The only person to be blamed is Ashutosh Gowariker.
Neverless, hope Hrithik does lot of movies in next 2 years and regain his supremacy. @ Indicine, any news on his upcoming movie “Fighter”?
