Box Office Records that Salman Khan targets with Sultan

It cannot get bigger than Sultan. The biggest star in the industry, the biggest film of the year and the second most successful period for film releases. The buzz is unbelievably high. Ask any exhibitor or anyone else in the trade and he’ll tell you the demand and craze for the film is extraordinary.

Sultan is the first event film of the year too. A film that could shatter box office records, both on its opening day and the extended 5-day weekend.

The current all-time record holders are as follows:

  • Highest Opening Day: Happy New Year 44.97 crore
  • Highest Single Day: Happy New Year 44.97 crore
  • Highest Opening Weekend: Happy New Year 108.86 crore
  • Highest Opening Weekend with just one holiday: Dhoom 3 107.61 crore
  • Highest First Week: Dhoom 3 188.99 crore
  • Highest Grosser of All Time: PK 340 crore

The 2016 record holders are:

  • Highest Opening Day 2016: FAN 19.20 crore
  • Highest Single Day 2016: Housefull 3 (Sunday) 21.80 crore
  • Highest First Weekend 2016: Housefull 3 53.31 crore
  • Highest First Week 2016: Airlift 83.5 crore
  • Highest Second Weekend 2016: Airlift 19.26 crore
  • Highest Second Week 2016: Airlift 28.79 crore
  • Highest Grossing film of 2016: Airlift 128.45 crore

All 2016 records won’t just be surpassed, but will be decimated by Sultan. It could double the previous best. Sultan could also become the highest Hindi grosser of 2016 in 5 days or less if the film finds appreciation. Even with average word-of-mouth, it’s a foregone conclusion that the Salman Khan film will race past Airlift.

The targets that can do justice to Salman’s stardom will be those at all-time levels. As far as opening records are concerned, Happy New Year will be the film to beat. When it comes to lifetime, if the word-of-mouth is strong, comparisons will immediately begin with Bajrangi Bhaijaan and PK. If the film gets a mixed response, we could be looking at Chennai Express and Kick. If the film turns out to be very poorly made, then Bodyguard and Dabangg 2 will be more realistic comparisons.

  • @Michele bee colleone:: Yes,no FBO article,said no words appreciating or even criticizing the Rustom trailer.They are very much indifferent to it.Not announced the result of poll they conducted on twitter bcoz Rustom won that poll against MJD by a healthy margin,66:34 but they were quick to post “Hrithik praised Rustom trailer article”.

  • This film will be outright rejected in multiplex and hence no opening records. It is impossible to beat opening records with extraordinary single screen number if multiplex is not that high even though footfall may be way higher. That was the case with PRDP. Releasing in maximum no. of screens and with highest price of tickets, and better footfalls, the movie couldn’t break any single box office records just because it wasn’t up to the mark in multiplex.
