Industry insiders say, unless the makers of both films meet and work out a solution, the clash between Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees and Salman Khan’s Sultan is certain to take place.
The Raees camp is holding on to the lucrative Eid release date for two reasons. One, their film would be ready in a couple of months, but there is still a chance that Sultan could be delayed. With 6 months to go for Eid, about 3 months of Sultan shoot is still left.
Secondly, the makers of Raees appear to be extremely confident of the film that they have made. Even if Raees doesn’t get a bigger opening than Sultan, producer Farhan Akhtar publicly said it’s the content that works in the long run.
At a promotional campaign for Wazir, Akhtar said “The opening numbers of both Raees and Sultan will be affected, but I think in the long run it is the word of mouth publicity which will matter. There cannot be a better publicity than people coming out and speaking about it. A good word of mouth would ensure a long run (for Raees) at the box office”
Meanwhile, the industry is abuzz with news of ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ star Anushka Sharma joining the Sultan team as the female lead. After Deepika Padukone (who made her debut in Om Shanti Om) in Bajirao Mastani, another heroine who was launched in a Shah Rukh Khan film, would be in the opposite camp.
The contest is likely to be evenly matched, even though the Sultan camp will be holding the psychological advantage after the success of Bajirao Mastani and the fact that Salman has dominated Eid in the last few years.
When two big films clash, the impact of the clash is more pronounced in the domestic market. The chances of both films working here in India is less. The distribution angle will be interesting, as Sultan is backed by all-powerful Yash Raj Films. But Aditya Chopra is close to Shah Rukh, so it remains to be seen what sort of impact their personal equation has on the clash and division of screens and shows in India.
The battle in the overseas markets would be something to watch out too. Shah Rukh has been the numero uno star for nearly 2 decades and the outstanding performance of Dilwale, inspite of competition, has reaffirmed his status as the biggest crowd puller overseas.
But Salman, who was a distant third (after SRK and Aamir) in the overseas markets, took a huge leap with Bajrangi Bhaijaan – which became the highest overseas grosser in Phase 1 of release (overall 3rd). Prem Ratan Dhan Payo performed reasonably well too.
Raees, directed by Rahul Dholakia, stars Shah Rukh, Mahira Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Sultan, directed by Ali Abbas Zafaar, features Salman Khan, Anushka Sharma and Randeep Hooda.

Sultan is produced and distributed by one of the biggest producer of Bollywood induatry Yash Raj plus bound to have better star cast.
But Raees sololy rides on SRK shoulder.Sultan will defenetly take better opening.Rest will be word of mouth.
One of the major disadvantage of clash is big film with mixed WOM will affected badly.but when same movie releases sololy might survive.

Salman last 2 eid releases kick n bajrangibhaijaan was also completed shooting in 3-4 mnths so it vil not pose a problem for sultan as both shooting n post-production work were carried simultaneously in case of bb,same can b implied in case of sultan.

Few Srk fans are comparing this clash with BM vs Dilwale and saying that Raees is BM and SULTAN is Dilwale. Indirectely they are accepting that Salman is much bigger star than Srk and only hope for Raees is that it turn out to be far better than SULTAN.
Bhai Fans are overconfident like sultan’s director saab. After seeing under performing of Dilwale and Bhai entered 300cr club, Bhai fans as well as Ali Abbas Zafaar ready to take challenge of a superstar who ruled bollywood more than 2 decades. Bhai is considered the biggest star in bollywood at the moment, If sultan is lose to raees then how bhai fans will manage to survive. So, sultan has still time and move to another date. We have an EXCLUSIVE gossip that will make fans of both the Superstars rejoice…
The year has started off on a good note already with the first release of 2016, the Amitabh Bachchan and Farhan Akhtar-starrer Wazir kick starting the box office game. We have has many interesting films lined up for release this year and with that we are going to witness many box office clashes too. But the most spoken about clash of 2016 is the clash of the superstars of Bollywood, Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan. Both their films, Sultan and Raees respectively, are going to release this year on Eid, but there was a buzz since a while that the clash might be avoided to cut the losses.
We have already seen Shah Rukh Khan’s Dilwale being affected due to its clash with Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone’s Bajirao Mastani and vice-versa. Many distributors also incurred huge losses because of the clash. Many cine-goers also couldn’t see their favourite film for a few days because of the lesser number of shows and screen space that each film had received. So, everyone was wishing that this ‘clash of the titans’ would be avoided.
And here is the FABULOUS news that you all have been waiting for. Yes, Salman Khan’s Sultan and Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees won’t be clashing on Eid this year. So did one film shift because of the other? Nah, that isn’t the case at all. The real reason is completely different.
Apparently, Sultan is going to be delayed by a few weeks or even a month. Why? The very obvious answer is the leading lady of the film, Anushka Sharma, was finalised only two days backs. While Raees will be ready by the end of this month, the crew of Sultan will still be shooting till the end of April and hence they won’t be ready to release their film on Eid. A source close to Sultan reveals to us EXCLUSIVELY, “Sultan and Raees won’t be clashing on Eid anymore. Aditya Chopra and Salman Khan took a long time in finalising the leading actress of the film and though Salman has shot for various portions of the film already, a lot of shots and post-production work is still pending. Aditya Chopra also wants this to be one of the biggest films of the year and hence he is going to be looking into a lot of aspects of the film including Anushka Sharma’s look for the film. They will make her look like a real wrestler and also train her to speak in a Haryanvi accent before starting the shoot. This means that Sultan will still be on the floor till April end and the makers won’t be able to complete all the post-production work till Eid. It seems the producers will now look for another suitable release date and make an official announcement soon.”
So this means the delay in finalising the leading lady of Sultan has sent the whole film’s schedule for a toss and no one including producer Aditya Chopra, director Ali Abbas Zafar and actors Salman Khan and Anushka Sharma are in any hurry to complete the film in a rush. They want to put out a convincing, realistic and entertaining film and hence they will have chosen to move their release date.
Earlier in an EXCLUSIVE interview with BollywoodLife, Shah Rukh Khan had also mentioned that they (teamRaees) were willing to move if Sultan is ready in time. He had said, “Yeah, I guess we (Raees) could shift. But I don’t know the readiness of Sultan. Raees will be ready in January, in like 20 days. Plus, they all are friends – Adi (Aditya Chopra), Salman (Khan), Ali (Abbas Zafar), I know them all. So, if mutually we all can figure out a date where one of us goes a week up or down, we might! Or we might not!”
But it seems that Shah Rukh Khan won’t have to shift his release date after all and there won’t be any blood loss for either of the two films. In fact, this is a win-win situation for both the films. Both the films are said to be unconventional and HUGE entertainers and now that they are not going to clash with each other, they will open very well and may become the highest grossers of the year.
@ANK, we had spoken to YRF source just a couple of days back. Sultan is on schedule to release during Eid, unless there is a major delay. Post-production work is being done simultaneously. So even if there is a slight delay in shoot, they will wrap up the film by Mid April. Salman is used to filming in tight schedules, Bodyguard was completed less than a month before the film was to release. Even Bajrangi Bhaijaan was wrapped up late.
Raees might not be postpone b’coz of completion of shooting in the end of this month ….

When it comes to content, Raees has little edge over Sultan b’coz Sultan hasn’t released the original teaser of movie but Raees teaser is very impressive ….

@Challa, I have been here since start of 2014 in comment section, not only Dilwale even before HNY you can read my comments that I already predicted them to underperform as I don’t liked their trailer and not even interested in direction of Farah. I am not a srk hater as there is no personal equation of line with srk, and he didn’t done anything which affected my personal life so chance of hate, yes I don’t like him and I am not his fan. Regarding Gerua song, yes there is definitely a chance that when you don’t like someone you may be don’t like thing associated with it but whenever I gives my review of his movie trailer or song, I only gives my opinion with remain unbias.I don’t liked Gerua at all, first of srk-kajol were trying to be act like young couple which sorry to say wasn’t convincing at all, The only thing was good in the song was a locations.That’s it. But in case of Janam-Janam video I found everything which I was expected, you can see my comments on Janam-2 video. Its not necessary that when most of the people liked something than I should like that too. Even there are some people who don’t like 3idiots.
Regarding Raees frankly speaking when Raees was announced it was nothing more than Don3 for me, I even quoted Raees as Don 3 in many of my comments.But after impressive Raees teaser I given respect to the film and now only quoting with right name. But what was so special in Raees to media is going gaga over, is that not generating too much unnecessary expectation with only one minute teaser which even didn’t show what the plot and story is about to. Srk is not doing negative role first time and there is long list after Baazigar & Darr when srk negative character filmed were not appreciated much. Anjaam was a box office failure,Raamjaane decent grosser, duplicate flop. Don series wasn’t liked outside of srk fans. Real life Smuggler/Don character was even remembering the Ajay devgn Sultan Mirza act.
Now Look at other srk Film called Fan. The film is unique itself. I have always mentioned that Fan is the only srk film which I am waiting for since the start of 2015. Reason Unique storyline,srk is playing a fan character and his character is shown very young. Thus kind of film I don’t think attempted ever. Except Jthj & Dtph I loved all srk-yrf film so expectation also rise further for me while srk-excel Don series I didn’t liked at all. Raees is directed by Rahul dholakiya who got national film award for Parjania but he has also given two box office dud kehta h dil bar bar & lamha and neither of them were critically acclaimed.
Regarding Sultan excessive expectation of raees & srk limited acceptance as negative roles in vast section of audience in last 20 years post DDLJ as well as casting of Pakistani actress everything eventually helped Sultan more. Salman film not come with huge expectation of content but for sheer entertainment which sultan looking promising in that aspect. So that’s why I picked Sultan in the clash.
I am not a Salmam fan, I am more a Aamir fan so I don’t need to follow them.
