Raees vs Sultan Update

Industry insiders say, unless the makers of both films meet and work out a solution, the clash between Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees and Salman Khan’s Sultan is certain to take place.

The Raees camp is holding on to the lucrative Eid release date for two reasons. One, their film would be ready in a couple of months, but there is still a chance that Sultan could be delayed. With 6 months to go for Eid, about 3 months of Sultan shoot is still left.

Secondly, the makers of Raees appear to be extremely confident of the film that they have made. Even if Raees doesn’t get a bigger opening than Sultan, producer Farhan Akhtar publicly said it’s the content that works in the long run.

At a promotional campaign for Wazir, Akhtar said “The opening numbers of both Raees and Sultan will be affected, but I think in the long run it is the word of mouth publicity which will matter. There cannot be a better publicity than people coming out and speaking about it. A good word of mouth would ensure a long run (for Raees) at the box office”

Meanwhile, the industry is abuzz with news of ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ star Anushka Sharma joining the Sultan team as the female lead. After Deepika Padukone (who made her debut in Om Shanti Om) in Bajirao Mastani, another heroine who was launched in a Shah Rukh Khan film, would be in the opposite camp.

The contest is likely to be evenly matched, even though the Sultan camp will be holding the psychological advantage after the success of Bajirao Mastani and the fact that Salman has dominated Eid in the last few years.

When two big films clash, the impact of the clash is more pronounced in the domestic market. The chances of both films working here in India is less. The distribution angle will be interesting, as Sultan is backed by all-powerful Yash Raj Films. But Aditya Chopra is close to Shah Rukh, so it remains to be seen what sort of impact their personal equation has on the clash and division of screens and shows in India.

The battle in the overseas markets would be something to watch out too. Shah Rukh has been the numero uno star for nearly 2 decades and the outstanding performance of Dilwale, inspite of competition, has reaffirmed his status as the biggest crowd puller overseas.

But Salman, who was a distant third (after SRK and Aamir) in the overseas markets, took a huge leap with Bajrangi Bhaijaan – which became the highest overseas grosser in Phase 1 of release (overall 3rd). Prem Ratan Dhan Payo performed reasonably well too.

Raees, directed by Rahul Dholakia, stars Shah Rukh, Mahira Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. Sultan, directed by Ali Abbas Zafaar, features Salman Khan, Anushka Sharma and Randeep Hooda.

  • @Indicine is there any possibility of the clash getting averted. Since we all don’t want that Raees collections suffer a dent because of Sultan as SRK is doing some good movies as an ACTOR n not as a superstar. And considering the clash is with another superstar then both movies will face big losses. And there collections might go down by 40-50%. Kindly post the scenarios of a normal clash with any pre-booking of screens.

  • One more illogical logic from SRK fans…
Dilwale collected above 20 million in oversead with Masala Genre which is not Universally accepted.
Then From when Dhoom 3 became Cult Classic and Content Oriented. It was also a masala film ? and collected much more than Every SRK film. after 2 years of that with more screens and higher ticket rates Dilwale didn’t matched Dhoom 3. so stop using illogical logic, We know well u all gone mad by Dilwale’s failure. Even HR with Bang Bang given big lead to Shahid kapoor (better than Shahid) without Christmas period. #Shame
Thanks God I’m not an SRK fan, nahi to main bhi abhi pagal ho jata.

  • Indian industry has to grow in terms of content as well as business. And that can happen only when the biggest crowd pullers of this industry get solo release.
If solo on EID then RAEES as well as Sultan might have 35+ cr opening day and and 115+ cr weekend

  • @Fayez 7:37 pm : You are keeping a track of all my comments (like when I was absent and when did I comment), that proves I am your biggest nightmare , forget about the verdict of Fan and Raees.
Ok, so what you just said? Dilwale is a failure ? You fool, if your idol’s PRDP would have clashed with BM, it would not have crossed Ready and in overseas, it would have been a completely washout. Let the non-actor face a CLASH (and I hope it happens next Eid as I desperately want it) , then I will see what star power he has. With so much negativity, protest and CLASH with a critically acclaimed movie, Dilwale is a Semi-Hit in India (Controversial as it might be declared as HIT) and an ATBB in overseas. So if a semi-HIT in India and ATBB in overseas is termed as failure, then I am really thankful to haters like you, who has set such a high standards for SRK, because such standards can only be set for a megastar and not some south remakes made star.
    God bless you.

@Joker Bhushan 7:47 pm : Forget about SRK, bhabhijan was defeated by one year old kid in 2008, with an average movie. SRK is defeated in this CLASH, yes, but from a better movie and an established actor (5 years old) .

@Shameless Shaggy 7:48 pm : Good that you indirectly admitted that bhabhijaan tasted the success only after 2009. Well, I can’t expect anything better from a fool like you, so keep trolling yourself.
And before advising other to get their mental checkup done (Challa and Javed in this case) , better go and wear some bangles and come. Because they are at least man of their words and stick to what they tell , unlike you shameless girl, who makes some bogus prediction and then runs away.

@Aunt 7:54 pm : Very sad to see that a Bhojpuri loggerhead like you is calling a classic actor as Bhojpuri. Where are the “Achche Din” for Indicine readers? Till when should we bear this old age aunt ?

@King of steel heart 8:09 pm : Ohh, aren’t you the same person who announced my retirement from indicine when I was absent for just a mere one day ??? According to you, I ran way because of Dilwale, right? So now you should be happy that I am back (though I never disappeared, I will be less active till mid-march) ?? Or that comment of yours was just intended to take situational advantage since lion was no there in the city ?? Or you are just a double standard moron, who keep changing his stands? I have multiple questions for you and hope, you bless me at least with a single answer.
And yeah, don’t just worry about my future. Don’t want to boast but since you have breached then listen. In a short span, I have earned that much that if I sit back and relax at home even for my entire lifetime, I won’t starve. So better worry about your livelihood .

@Aunt 9:08 pm : Again, I would like to remind you . The one, whom you are calling a “Bhikhari” has the capabilities of buying your entire clan. Not only this generation, but many coming generations too. So stop making a mockery of yourself by calling world’s 2nd richest actor as Bhikhari.
And shameless double mouthed Aunt, aren’t you the same woman who ranted about the short shooting schedule of Dilwale saying it would have been poorly made film. So why shivering now when I am giving you your own medicine ??????

  • @XZOOON SULTAN ALI KHAN IS A REAL MUSLIM NAME AS PER UR LOGIC OF FILMS CONNECT TO FESTIVE MEANS NOW SULTAN IS A BLOCKBUSTER

  • @xzone : What do you know about Muslim culture ? No true Muslim believes in ‘Sharab (alcohol) is my Kalma’ that’s what Srk dialogue in Raees teaser. In that case, even Salman is playing a Muslim wrestler in Sultan. Get your facts corrected !!!!

  • It is simple :

A wrestler not just fighting for own but humanity vs a self obsessed gangster and a alcohol smuggler

(As per story line declared by both camps)

  • Priyanka was the best part of Bajirao mastani as well as ranveer while i couldnt be satisfied with deepika’s performance as mastani only in fighting scenes n fewer other scenes she was fine however in piku she was far better

  • Srk fans still living in 2006. Let them live same illusion n get another Excusewaale. This time may be Farhan, Mahira or Dhalokia will be blamed !!!!!! They called Rohit Shetty #1 director before Dilwale and later blamed on poor content. Get your excuses ready Lungitards, Sultan is coming !!!!!!!!!

  • I think SRK has lost the right to release his films on holidays after the kind he has during the past 2-3 years.
But Sultan has Ali Abbas Zafar as first director.. That increases its chances of being a shitty film.
    Let’s see.

  • @Challa don’t be a jackass It’s not Salman who is insecure but your SRK is already afraid and trying to avoid clash so go bark up your backside instead of barking nonsense on this site. You boasted so much about Dilwale and got a kick in your backside. Besides its confirmed that Pakistani actress has to leave film. If she remains it will be bacchanal objections and negativity like you have never seen.

  • Eid was dominated by Salman”. Really ?
He was struggling with his regular masala craps to go past 3 idiots for 4 complete years, but couldn’t success. Whereas SRK came with a single masala flick on Eid and all existing records were thrashed.
So don’t say , “eid was dominated bu Salman”. yes, he is most successful on Eid among others because he released most of his movies on Eid.
But the word “Dominance” can be used if others too release their movies frequently on Eid and if they fail.

  • I want both movies to clash so that I can have my fun at indicine’s right here and indicine will be having like a record breaking 100 million comments for just a clash. Lol

  • Yesterday I predicted Salman and Hritik to have opening of 40 cr plus . While Srk Ajay Aamir 30 cr but I have revised it. Raees will earn 40 cr opening this year. I stick with it. So Hritik Shah rukh 40 cr opening. Salman Aamir Ajay 30 cr
Ranveer Akshay 20 cr then Ranbir Varun 15+.

  • @10:23pm

You absolutely right- it doesnt have an actor or overactor or even a non actor bcoz more important than that is that it has a MEGASTAR in it who rules the boxoffice….!

200cr grossers guaranteed in each of his last 3 outings and 4th 200cr film is also guaranteed….!

  • @spamZone

We are talking about short shooting schedules which in the case for Sultan is no problem as bhai isnt abandoning supposedly Content Rich films to instead rapid shoot for a masala film…! But your SRK greed for bo success made him rush U-Turnwale n hence the script had more u-turns in it than a politicians election manifesto….! You need to either talk sense with us the readers or go back to talking senseless gibberish pillow talk

  • so KARMA..of srk ..had started giving its result..lots of awards he had bought..unbeliveable amount of jealous n hatred..for his contemporaries…now his own film had suffering..what he did to once upon a time dobaara..by promising n not giving screens..look what had happened..same thing happened for his dilwale..where eros..had blocked the screen..it is his karma…

if you do good..you will get good..but if you do bad..you will get bad..

i remember one incident..during the time of kambakkht ishq release..it was a time..when akshay kumar was dominating..the indian box office..by giving back to back hit,..even akshay got the title of hit kumar…he was giving real challenge to so called paid media king..mr sharukh khan..

during the day before the release of kambakkht ishq..the pr of sharukh khan..started distributing msg that kambhakht ishq had flopped..next day the film released..and pr started distributing msg on a higher level..to spread negativity..even akshay kumar know that also…he had told that during conversation with ndtv reporter..he had not taken the name..just said that pr of one actor..started distributing negative msg..which akshay himself got..

its karma..everyone one will have to face it someday…whether u r superstar or a common man..

  • Sultan is easily the most awaited film and Salman is bigger star than srk in India so sultan will surely be the winner of this clash. It’s been proved again and again since 2010, that all Salman movies have earned much more than srk with only CE being exception for a short time, but with BB and prdp Salman has shows srk’s real place. So even if sultan doesnt have a good content and raees has great content, sultan will win by big margin hands down. Salman will return after more than 8 months while srk will be after 2 back to back movies dilwale and raees so sultan will surely create much more buzz than raees.

  • @Dilip what are you blabbering? Bodyguard was a south remake and so was kick. They both were blockbusters in south. Bhai knows how yo steal successful south movies and remake it. What was bhai’a aukaat before 2010? If you have guts then speak. Before 2010 Salman was nothing but just a flops giving star. He is just lucky because of our country’s illiterate audience like masala crap movies that’s why Salman is lucky since 2010.

  • @Fayez also don’t forget that Salman has given more than 25 flops in last decade. Bw in your limits. Giving blockbusters by stealing successful south movies’ copyrights and making remake blockbuster doesnt make anyone a real superstar. A real superstar is judged by his consistency. And in terms of consistency and success ratio srk and aamir are way ahead of your Salman who was almost written off in the last decade. So shut up with this same rubbish blockbusters wagon. Talk about Salman’s flops if you have guts. He is the 2nd most flops giving actor in Bollywood. And if we look at Salman’s whole career then his failure ratio is much bigger than his success. So shut your mouth.

  • I am kinda worried about Sultan. I didn’t like Alis films previously and if we compare his directing skills with Rahul Dholakia, then ali is not even close. IF the movie does better business than raees, then it is all thanks too Salman and YRF brilliant marketing. Still tough if Sultan loses this clash … That won’t be good…

  • @Indicine:

    Please post this poll.
‘Which movie are you gonna watch if both the films clash?
    – Raees
    – Sultan
