Rajesh Khanna, the first superstar of Indian cinema, has been posthomously named for the Padma Bhushan, the country’s third highest civilian honour on the eve of Republic Day.
Rajesh Khanna, fondly known as Kaka in the film faternity, began his career with “Aakhri Khat” in 1966 and in a career spanning five decades, he became a superstar like no other with hits like “Aradhana”, “Do Raaste”, “Safar” and “Anand”.
Between “Aradhana” in 1969 and “Prem Kahani” in 1975, he enjoyed god-like status. The frenzy was such that women would line the road for a glimpse, chant his name, cover his car with lipstick marks and even write him letters in blood.
He passed away in July last year following prolonged illness. He was 69.

Bollywood’s “Hawa hawaii” girl Sridevi has been named for the Padma Shri, India’s civilian award, on the eve of 64th Republic Day.
The 49-year-old, who made a grand Bollywood comeback in 2012 with a strong female-centric role in “English Vinglish”, boasts of a filmography of 265 movies. She came back after a 15-year sabbatical, and won hearts with her simple and subtle performance in the film as a homemaker struggling to learn English.
Sridevi started her journey as a child artist way back in 1967, and went on to do her first role as an adult in Tamil film “Moondru Mudichu” in 1976. It was only following scores of southern films that Sridevi found her Bollywood calling with “Sadma”.
She went on to cement her standing in Bollywood with hits like “Nagina”, “Mr. India”, “Chandni” and “ChaalBaaz” and became the reigning queen of the Hindi films in the 1980s and 1990s.
She also won critical acclaim for “Lamhe”.
Married to Hindi film producer Boney Kapoor, Sridevi has two daughters – Jhanvi and Khushi. Age has failed to take a toll on her as she looks as radiant as ever and spreads the same magic in front of the camera.

Veteran actress Sharmila Tagore has been named for the Padma Bhushan on the eve of 64th Republic Day.
The great-grand niece of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, Sharmila’s tryst with movies began when she had just entered her teens. She was 13 when she did her first Bengali film “Apur Sansar” in 1959.
However, the bigger recognition came her way when she entered the Hindi film industry with “Kashmir Ki Kali” and after that there was no looking back for her.
The 68-year-old’s body of work boasts of successes like “An Evening In Paris”, “Aradhana”, “Amar Prem”, “Mausam” and “Chupke Chupke”. She is said to be one of the foremost Bollywood ladies who flaunted a bikini on screen in “An Evening In Paris”.
Be it in glamorous roles or serious character-driven parts – Sharmila made it big in all spheres.
Her open-mindedness to roles and stories also translated to the changed content in Bollywood when she took over the reins as the censor board chief in 2004. It is during her term that experimental and bold films like “Tere Bin Laden”, “Dev D” and “Love, Sex Aur Dhokha” were released.
She has also been the face of Indian cinema at foreign film festivals, like the prestigious Cannes International Film Festival, where she served as a jury member in 2009.
Sharmila married Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, the cricket star and skipper, in 1969, and has three children – actors Saif and Soha, and designer Saba.
Saif received the Padma Shri honour in 2010.
