My Name Is Khan which opened to packed houses during the weekend and eventually crashed at single screens and multiplexes in smaller cities has performed well-enough at the Indian box office to earn HIT status in less than 3 weeks.
The film crossed the 65 crore nett mark in 2 weeks and is heading towards lifetime business of around 75 – 78 crores.
Fox, the distributors of My Name Is Khan will recover their investment through the films theatrical business alone, as the film has performed very well overseas, along with good collections back home in India.

All said and done though, MNIK will be considered below expectations here in India for the following reasons.
- The film was expected to compete with Aamir’s 3 Idiots, but is expected to fall short of the first week business of 3 Idiots (80 crores) in its entire run.
- My Name Is Khan will not be able to cross the lifetime business of SRK’s last two films Om Shanti Om and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi.

Shahrukh’s My Name Is Khan which had got a bombastic opening opening in it’s first week has lost grip over the Box Office in it’s second week and seems to be no match for Aamir’s 3 Idiots. My Name Is Khan has seen a steep fall in the second week with occupancy falling as much as 60% to 80%.
Buzz up!The movie had started off well thanks to the controversy created by the Shiv Sena over Shahrukh’s support to the Pakistani players in the IPL. Fox Star India which is distributing the movie was excited after the movie had a better start than 3 Idiots. But My Name Is Khan seems to have lost the momentum having grossed Rs. 150 Crores in the second week compared to Rs. 240 Crores , 3 Idiots grossed in the first 10 days.
This is not the first time that Shahrukh has emerged No. 2 in the race. In 2008 too Shahrukh’s Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi was going well but when Aamir’s Ghajini released the movie found tough to breathe. Ghajini had gone on to establish records at the Box Office which was incidentally broken by Aamir starer 3 Idiots. Now having lost two consecutive rounds to Aamir, Shahrukh will find it tough to keep his ‘Baadshah of Bollywood’ tag.

On a whole, both the films are accepted by audience with Three Idiots taking a substantial lead. The Khan Battle: Aamir wins hands down
Three khan movies – 3 Idiots, Veer and My Name Is Khan – released in last three months sparking off the famous Khan war in Bollywood. Now that it’s more than a week after the release of the latest one, it is time to ask who won the Battle Royale.
The verdict is Aamir Khan won hands down.
Salman’s Veer averaged at the box office, so no comparison at all. But what does this mean for Badshah Khan?
Uncomfortable for all you SRK fans out there, but the truth is Aamir is clear No 1.
It is dangerous for superstars to depart from their respective image. But this time either Khans chose an unconventional character. SRK was bolstered by nostalgia-evoking pairing with Kajol in MNIK, still it faltered in Indian box offices.
On the other hand, Aamir got everything right, whether it is script, music or promotion, and sped past SRK, both critically & commercially.
Last but not the least – the Controversy bit…
All three movies dwelt on subjects, which are very different from one another. But one thing is common – all three landed in controversy before release. There is no denying that controversies help in garnering media attention. The Khans have mastered the art, you must admit.
But how much of controversy translated into Box office success?
Many of us thought the Sena vs SRK row would actually boost up the sales of MNIK. Some even thought the controversy was actually orchestrated. The same Shah Rukh kept mum when IPL franchisees decided to ‘unofficially’ boycott the Pakistani players. Then what prompted him to comment that he would like to sign up Pak players for Knight Riders. Some insecurity spawned by 3 Idiot’s stupendous success?
