Munna Michael Day 1 Box Office Collection Report

Munna Michael has fared poorly on its opening day at the box office, collecting Rs 6.5 crore on Day 1. The film has performed well at single-screens, but was dismal at multiplexes.

In comparison, the collections of Munna Michael is the worst ever for the actor-director combo of Tiger Shroff and Sabbir Khan. Their first film, Heropanti, collected exactly the same – but released on 2250 screens in 2014. Their second film, Baaghi, collected 12 crore. It was one of the few films that managed to get an ‘excellent’ opening last year. Munna Michael has collected about half of that with 10% more screens.

The problem for the film was probably the marketing campaign along with the promos and music. While Baaghi had terrific action and music, Munna Michael promos were more dance centric. Nawazuddin Siddiqui was also not used well.

Predicting film business has become difficult in the ‘Post Baahubali 2 era’, as most films have under-performed on Day 1. Raabta was poorer than a dark film like Rangoon, Salman Khan’s Eid release Tubelight was well below expectations, Jagga Jasoos too should’ve probably collected close to 10 crore on its opening day. The audience, especially at multiplexes, is making its reluctance to spend quite clear. Only the deserving films are sustaining and collecting in the long run. About 4 or 5 films have got a good initial this year and that includes ‘Bahubali 2’, ‘Raees’, ‘Badrinath Ki Dulhania’, ‘Sachin: A Billion Dreams’ and ‘Half Girlfriend’.

The rest are putting up shocking numbers and that’s unlikely to change in the near future.
