Arjun Kapoor’s Mubarakan has taken a shockingly low opening on Friday, with the film collecting around 5.25 crore on its opening day at the box office. The Anees Bazmee comedy now needs nothing less than a miraculous jump in business over the weekend and then a strong ‘Friday-level’ Monday – to have absolutely any chance of doing well.
‘Mubarakan’ joins the growing list of films that have opened well below expectations on the opening day. ‘Raabta’, ‘Tubelight’, ‘Jagga Jasoos’, ‘Munna Michael’ – just to name a few – have all failed to take starts.
The opening day business of ‘Mubarakan’ is the lowest for an Arjun Kapoor starrer since ‘Aurangzeb’ in 2013. But even that film, with less than half the costs, opened at 4 crore. His last two films like ‘Ki & Ka’ (7.4 crore) and Half Girlfriend (10 crore) opened very well, but ‘Mubarakan’ has shockingly fallen about 30% short of a niche film like ‘Ki & Ka’.
Compared to other films in 2017, the opening of ‘Mubarakan’ is only a few lakhs higher than films like ‘Naam Shabana’, ‘Commando 2’ and ‘Rangoon’. Two of those films were cheaper and didn’t have a star, while ‘Rangoon’ was dark and unexciting.
The film itself is better than the collections, but multiplex business didn’t show a major upward trend Friday evening onwards. With ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ scheduled to release next weekend, ‘Mubarakan’ needs 50-60% growth on Saturday and double digit collections on Sunday.

Except Tubelight all these medium budget films are not the ones for which you would get excited & watch on Friday itself.. I chose English films like Spider-Man Homecoming, War for the Planet of the Apes, Dunkirk etc on Day 1 because I was dying to watch them & already knew they were too good.. Then I saw those Hollywood blockbusters again during weekdays along with our Bollywood craps when ticket prices reduced..
But now next I am obviously excited for JHMS & TEPK opening show

I don’t know why critics praised this movie because going by the promos. ..arjun kapoor looked hugely miscast and anil kapoor doing overacting with lame jokes………i repeat arjun kapoor is one bad example of nepotism. ..
@indicine, your predictions are either very accurate (sometimes) or very wrong (most of the times). Industry is going through a bad phase, you can’t expect JHMS to open above 15 cr or TEPK above 12 cr.

Indicine team used to be fearless, writes articles on bollywood news, FBO and LBOs predictions as real as they were even when some star fans disapproved. Recently, I strongly believe the team is becoming influenced by some bollywood big shots and u guys are seriously losing it.
