A case study needs to be done on a film like ‘Mohenjo Daro’ because a film that was arguably the most anticipated release of the year, has turned out to be the biggest disappointment.
During times when films like ‘Baahubali’ and ‘Bajirao Mastani’ are being made, a lot more was expected from a film like ‘Mohenjo Daro’ in every department, more so when it comes to scale, grandeur and visual effects. The film not only failed in its visual presentation, but the music and promos were underwhelming too.
Check out the graph that tracks Mohenjo Daro before the launch of the trailer, right until the release of the film on August 12.
The pre-release expectation was high, more so because films on a historical subject were working at the box office and the combo of Hrithik and Ashutosh were returning 8 years after a film like ‘Jodhaa Akbar’.

As you can see from the graph above, the only period during the entire promotional campaign that Mohenjo Daro showed some sort of an upward trend was in the week between 6th July to 13th July. That’s when ’Tu Hai’ released. It was the only song that was received well, but other than that nothing tracked.
The last hope was content, but late on Thursday night (day before release), it was clear that Rustom would win the clash and Mohenjo Daro would be decimated.
It seems that indicine have some personal grudge against mohen jodaro and Hrithik, never seen so many articles on a failed movie
@Indicine : Well said about Sultan. It exceeded the expectations whereas FAN and MJD failed to come near its expectation forget meeting or exceeding them.
@ANK : I know you are a sensible guy but Indicine is just doing their work. There is no enjoyment showing some actor’s downfall. Both SRK and Hrithik are too big to get affected by 1-2 failures however after Akki’s successful streak this year they have a lot to catch up specially to match Salman and Aamir both (SRK & HR) need something like PK or BB not once but twice !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now indicine, a point I would like to make here is that even Jodha Akbar was not a hit movie and i am talking about just a HIT tag as it was much below that.
Critics perception and and public acceptance are two different things…which you are very well aware of this. So when we talk about image of Jodha Akbar contributing in any way to expectations from MJ it was zero neither positive nor negative.
And if we only go by box office (which indicates how much your movie is liked in theatres), Ashutosh gowariker is a poor director and as a producer I would never invest my money on him.
Example- Swades. I am huge fan of Swades. BUT it was a flop WHY? Because audience didnt like the movie in THEATRES….they may have liked it later on television or any other medium but as far as theatres are concerned movie was not liked by general public. This is the public that doesnt talk about movies in general (be it on social platform or day to day life) they just watch it and then they LIKE it or they dont like it.

MD is go goa gone…why we still need to pull its leg as if it was the first flop in Indian Cinema. Like Humans, movies also have ups & downs.
Hrithik is still in top 4 bollywood actors and one flop will not take away any credibility from him…
