Trade analyst Komal Nahta talks about the box office clash during Christmas, between Shah Rukh Khan’s Dilwale and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani.
The trade is still hoping that one of the two films – Dilwale and Bajirao Mastani – would be postponed so that the big clash on 18th December is averted.
I have seen around 50 minutes of Shah Rukh Khan and Rohit Shetty’s Dilwale. I have also seen the trailer and the song of Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Eros International’s Bajirao Mastani. Both the films hold promise of clicking at the box-office in a very big way. There is every reason to believe that Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol’s romance in Dilwale will appeal to the audience this time also as it has done so often in the past. Varun Dhawan brings in the youth factor in Rohit Shetty’s film and one doesn’t need to emphasise how popular he is among the youth today. Shah Rukh and Rohit have delivered a blockbuster in Chennai Express and so, what prevents one from assuming that Dilwale will surpass the business of Chennai Express?
Likewise, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, known for his sensitively-handled love stories and his ostentatious sets, seems to have surpassed himself in Bajirao Mastani if the trailer and visuals of the first song are any indication. He gave Ranveer Singh his first 100-crore film in Ram-Leela. There’s again every reason to assume that the filmmaker will outdo himself with Bajirao Mastani, starring the very Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone with Priyanka Chopra in a full-fledged role this time as against a special appearance in a song-dance in Ram-Leela.
If that’s how things stand today, why are all – Shah Rukh Khan, Rohit Shetty, Kishore Lulla and Sanjay Leela Bhansali – bent on not realising the full potential of their own film? Nobody will dispute the fact that a simultaneous release will adversely affect collections of both the films. If Shah Rukh can’t claim that the opposition of Bajirao Mastani will not make a dent in the business of his films, Sanjay Bhansali, too, cannot overlook the danger of releasing his film in direct opposition of Dilwale. One may argue that Gadar Ek Prem Katha and Lagaan had both hit the screens on the same day in 2001 (June 15) and had both proved hits, so what’s the problem in releasing Dilwale and Bajirao Mastani on 18th December? But times are different today because multiplexes (which didn’t exist in 2001) bring in the maximum moolah at the box-office nowadays. Also, business today happens in two or three weeks flat and, therefore, a big film needs to open in the maximum number of shows in multiplexes to realise its true potential.
Eros International and Bhansali may argue that they had announced 18th December as the release date of Bajirao Mastani before Shah Rukh declared that he’d bring his Dilwale on that date. Eros and Bhansali may, therefore, feel that nobody can ask them to shift their release; if anybody should be moving, it is the makers of Dilwale. On his part, Shah Rukh may rewind back to the time when his Om Shanti Om had clashed with Bhansali’s Saawariya and the box-office results were there for all to see. The superstar may, therefore, argue that he has no reason to budge from the release date of December 18, never mind if he announced it after Bajirao Mastani.
Both the arguments make sense. But does that mean that both the films should stick to the release date and eat into each other’s collections by hitting the screens on the same day? Not at all!
We are talking about releasing two potential hits, not a case in the court of law. Logic comes in handy in arguing cases in courts, business sense is what should be of paramount importance in matters of finance. And whether Shah Rukh, Bhansali, Lulla or Rohit Shetty like it or not, they have to put logic aside and think of their own interest first.
The situation being what it is, who then should move from the date which, thanks to the two big films scheduled for release, seems to have become so important that one would assume, December 18 is the day when Diwali, Eid and ten more festivals fall together!?!
Before offering a solution, let it be said loudly and clearly that the question of finding a solution has arisen only and only because both, Dilwale and Bajirao Mastani, look like huge potential hits. If one of the two films was not promising enough, there would be no question of seeking a solution because there wouldn’t be any perceived problem. The trade would be putting its bets on the film which would seem to be the dark horse and would actually be pitying the expected fate of the weaker film. But that’s not the case. Everyone in the trade feels that both the films are dark horses, that both need clear fields to realise their fullest potential.
Unless something goes drastically wrong, Dilwale will be the first choice of more people, and even Lulla or Bhansali cannot deny this fact. Deepika, Ranveer and Priyanka make for a formidable trio and if they are cast in a Bhansali film, they’d, of course, be ten times more appealing but can they be more exciting than Shah Rukh, Kajol, Varun Dhawan and Rohit Shetty? Doubtful.
That being so, why would Kishore Lulla and Sanjay Leela Bhansali want to harm their own film by clashing with a film which seems – to the paying public – bigger than their own film. Please note, one is talking only of public perception here because before the films are released, the public has only its perception (based on what it has seen by way of trailers and heard by way of the film’s music) to fall back upon and decide which film it will watch first. More will opt for Dilwale than Bajirao Mastani. In the ultimate analysis, any of the two films could prove to be bigger and better than the other. But initially, perception-wise, nobody can deny that Dilwale will be the first choice for more people than Bajirao Mastani. This logic should be enough – no, not to scare Lulla and Bhansali (because the reports of the trailer and songs of Bajirao Mastani are indeed exceptional) but to make them take a rational decision to change their release date. There’s nothing to feel defeated or small or shameful about if they do shift the release date. Nobody, not even Shah Rukh or Shetty would view this, if the postponement of Bajirao Mastani happens – as it should – as a move on the part of the producers taken under fear or pressure. This would rather be an intelligent business decision which Lulla and Bhansali would live to cherish all their lives. Forget Dilwale or Shah Rukh or Rohit Shetty, the makers of Bajirao Mastani would be doing their own film and the trade the biggest favour by getting their film to the cinemas on a different date.
Frankly, every single distributor of Dilwale and Bajirao Mastani is unhappy that both the films would be clashing at the ticket windows. Every multiplex chain, every single-screen cinema in the country is hoping for a ‘miracle’ to happen and one of the two films to be shifted ahead. Ideally, a big multiplex may want to give Dilwale 35 or 40 shows a day in the first week. The same big multiplex may want to offer Bajirao Mastani around 20 or more shows per day in the week of release. How many multiplexes in India will be able to do that? In other words, how many multiplexes have the capacity for 60 or more shows per day? Hardly any! That itself should be reason enough for Bajirao Mastani to move away from 18th December and opt for either December 25 or January 22, 2016 (Republic Day week).
Although the trade is waiting with bated breath for the ‘miracle’ to happen, it is hardly going to be a miracle if it does indeed happen. For, it’s pure, simple and unadulterated business logic and nothing more than that. But yes, if it does happen, the troubled trade will definitely consider Lulla and Bhansali as the Gods who came to their rescue!

Well said komal
Such a long boring article just lile his reviews. And v all know how brilliantly he reviews films. He praises films like dabangg2 shaandar bodyguard and criticises mvz like znmd raajneeti mnik kai po che special 26 badlapur…… and the list goes on and on
Completely agreed. Two big films with big budgets releasing on the same day doesn’t make sense. Both sides know business will be divided yet are still hell bent on clashing, seems like a battle of egos more than anything. And the first week doesn’t even have any holidays! So one should at least come next year on 22nd january. It would make more sense for BM to postpone given Dilwale, box office wise, is probably a much bigger film.
seems like BJIRAO MASTANI is definitely going to postpone,, so many articles even critics saying it to postpone for DILWALE.
Dear Komal Nahta, why would you want that Lulla and Bhansali came for rescue I.e. they postponed the film. they made a film budgeted 100cr and booked for Christmas, SrK and team also coming on Christmas. tell me any perfect release date for Bajirao Mastani kind of costly film in 2016. The kind of budget and star power BM had there is only chance for them to overcome its high budget than it should be a holiday release and content. what would happen if Dilwake turned out a HNY, rote rehna 3 din k baad collection k liye. at least with clash and 4 open weeks both film has high chance to collect well. why would not Dilwale come on later date it has bigger star and most popular theme, it can definitely come close to 200cr on normal week release if content appreciated. but no one will look up to Bajirao if it postpone now. Bhansali is caught up in situation where he will have higher risk in every situation so it best if he would stick to this release date otherwise no one can save BM.
Bajirao Mastani it is all set to become the 2nd biggest flop of 2015 after BV. DILWALE will ruin it if clash happens. And the film of the budget is only 150 cr plus and unable to get 90 cr.!!!!!
Let trailer of Dilwale comes then Sanjay leela will himself postponed his release date. Baajirao mastani ka trailer aur songs bhi aagaye fir bhi koi excitement aur buzz nahi hai.Film ka budget bhi 150cr se jaada hai. aur Dilwale ka toh poster bhi nahi aaya fir bhi buzz aur excitement superhigh hai. trailer aane par toh qayamat aajayegi. Songs waise bhi best songs of the year maane ja rahe hai. Agar clash hua toh baajirao mastani 60cr par hi finish ho jayegi.that means disaster. I wish clash na hi ho toh better hai..
Agreed with Komal Nahta.. but more than Dec 25, Jan 22, 2016 would be way better date for Bajirao mastani as it can be badly effected on 25th dec too bec of Dilwale.
i think it will be wise if bajirao mastani is preponed by a week or two…releasing it on 25 th december would be a bigger risk than releasing it on 18th december…remember chennai express affected ouatim2 a lot..even though it released after a week on 15th august 2013
12 nov ko eska Baap aa raha hai ! new Records bnane ke liye ;)
These are Eros, SLB teams words…. but it has just been said by Komal Nahta that’s why anyone can feel after reading Komal’s article, they are just finding any reason, giving reason to postpone BM.
I am not being overconfident but looks like Eros will postpone Bajirao Mastani, that’s what any body can guess through Komal’s Article.
Why clash with Dilwale might be detrimental to Bajirao Mastani!
Will Shah Rukh Khan’s Dilwale ruin Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani?
Rohit Shetty’s next directorial venture starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Varun Dhawan and Kriti Sanon has upped the anticipation levels after the team launched an exclusive sneak peek into the film. Not just that, about a week back, many media representatives from all over the nation were taken to the sets of Dilwale and shown another exclusive 20 minutes video from the film. And whoever’s watched the video can’t stop appreciating it.
Cut to the real picture. While Dilwale is creating all the buzz, it’s now known to all that Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus Bajirao Mastani too is releasing on the same day as Dilwale. That means this December 18, Bollywood is all set for a Titanic clash.
Given that both of them are highly anticipated and hyped films of 2015, the clash would mean a division of business. For both Dilwale and Bajirao Mastani. But if you see the statistics, an analysis will give you a clearer picture. Although the clash might provide a dent to the Dilwale collections, it’s Bajirao Mastani which will be hit by a detrimental storm. Here’s why!
Dilwale’s safe territory
Having Shah Rukh Khan and Rohit Shetty teaming up for a film can hardly go wrong. For people who disagree, look at Chennai Express. The film, unlike other masala potboilers, went ahead to become the highest grosser of all times back then, beating Aamir Khan’s 3 Idiots. Also, it received a lot of love and adulation from the masses. Now picture this. Dilwale is not just a Rohit Shetty-SRK association. It has the powerful SRK-Kajol combo which can and has never gone wrong in the history of Bollywood. Plus, there’s Varun Dhawan, who’s possibly the biggest Gen-Y star currently. Why we say so? Varun’s the only new generation actor who’s single handedly managed to give a string of five consecutive successes. Beat that. Also, there’s Kriti who turned heads with her stellar act in Heropanti. Hence, Dilwale is rather in the safe territory for sure and there’s hardly any chance of the film going wrong. Even if the film clashes with Bajirao Mastani, the hype around the film will easily take it to the safe zone in a matter of less than a week’s time. We bet.
Bajirao’s risky!
However harsh it sounds, Bajirao Mastani although looks really interesting on paper, it’s albeit a very risky affair. Why we say so? Oodles of money pumped in for the film, to make sure it’s look and grandeur is maintained. With a budget of over hundred crore and still counting (The VFX is on!), Bajirao Mastani will suffer a huge blow if it clashes with the SRK starrer. Not only will it lose out on screens, but it will also see a serious dip in its collections. Given that it’s anyway a risky proposition, Bajirao Mastani still has the chance to recover its money if it comes out as a solo release. Despite the content of the film, it will necessarily get a grand opening, only if it releases on another date. And if the film thrives on good content, then there’s no stopping it. Will the same happen if it clashes with Dilwale? Think, think!
Star power!
Bajirao Mastani has Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Priyanka Chopra leading the pack. Despite being stars in their own spaces, neither a DP, RS or PC can match up to the level of euphoria and hype that a Rohit Shetty film bringing back the powerful SRK-Kajol combo calls for. Plus, even Varun is a safer bet at the box office than Ranveer. Why? Compare their career-graph and their movies’ box office incomes and you’ll have your answer. While people might still argue that SLB entered the 100 crore club with the same lead pair, one must understand that Ram Leela released around Diwali and was a grand solo release. Plus, the scenario wasn’t as risky as it is with Bajirao Mastani. And eventually, it’s the star power of an actor which brings the audiences to the multiplexes and the single screens to watch their films. And there, Dilwale can have no competition. Period.
The Marketing!
Bajirao Mastani’s team is planning to take the marketing brigade to another level altogether. But no matter how much they try, it’s very difficult to get past the marketing genius that one man in the Dilwale team possesses. Thy name’s Shah Rukh Khan. Known to heavily promote his film, SRK and Co will leave no stone unturned to make Dilwale the biggest film of the year, also this being SRK’s only release in 2015. Plus the appreciation and feedback the team has received from the mini-clips and the video footages they showed to the audiences, they’re doubly sure about their product and this can’t be competed with. Also, the film has already become a craze in the Gulf (which is one of the most prominent circuits) and advance bookings have started almost one and half months in advance for Dilwale, an initiative which is a first of its kind. All this just goes on to prove the tremendous star power that the entire Dilwale commands. Even Ranveer, Deepika and Priyanka would agree!
While the gossip corridors of Bollywood have been abuzz with fleeting rumours of Eros planning to move their film to a later date, also because the film involves heavy special effects and has still not been wrapped up, we’re sure it will be a better idea to rather have a solo release on a later date than clash with the monumental film and lose out on the huge money they’ve piped in for their most ambitious project..
Why everyone clashes with SRK all the time? Nobody dares to clash against Salman and Aamir. Does SRK purposely seek out clashes or is nobody afraid of him anymore (meaning SRK’s star power is finished)? Indicine, please answer. The world wants to know the truth. Or has SRK paid you off to hide the truth of his dwindling star power?
BM should move..family audience ko Dilwale jesi movie dekhni hai Xmas pe..aur Dilwale badi movie hai…BM choti hai
Kids won’t watch Bajirao Mastani So Families to avoid going for movie & leave children. Dilwale is pure Family Entertainer ??
Stupid nahata..saying to release on republic day weekend it means to release along with airlift which will have content 100 tyms better than disasterwale which looks another crapfest..nahale nahata may be dimaag kaam karne lage tera..and bhansali must stick to his release date..as dilwale will be a flop..
Komal sahab ko koi bolo charmao mat aur batao bhi do ke Eros ne hi likhwa kar post karwaya na postpone karne ka reason doondne ke liye. ;)
BM should move. TRUE
My idol, Komal Nahta!!
Wow, what brilliantly said. I love you, komal nahta. So, my name is komal nahi nahata. ?
if bajirao mastani will clash with Dilwale ….don’t worry …bajirao mastani will be extinct from the box office.
of course BM should postpone their release date. Seeing the gr8 hyle of dilwale,BM gonna washout.
Only one option is there, Bajirao Mastani have to postponed to 22nd jan or 25th.
Why should they postpone they will not do the same mistake what ekta kapoor did at ce release time.if they clash they will get more publicity than normal release which happened with son of sardar
nice article
don’t know ,but it looks BM makers are not confident about clash, their film n it seems they are finding reason to postpone their film bec of Dilwale…
BM should move away bcoz Dilwale has SRK…His name is enough to make a film blockbuster
ofcourse BM coz dilwale is a bigger film than bm
this article is by far d best… clear all doubts! thanks indicine
Mastani will be crushed to pulp wait and watch. if it clash
Itz better for Bajirao to release next yr!
