Kaabil vs Raees: How the clash is affecting business of two good films

Our Twitter timeline has gone crazy today with most people failing to understand what we try to squeeze into 140 characters. We don’t want to blame them because every Tom, Dick and Harry today talks like an all-knowing trade analyst.

On a more serious note, two big films released in theatres this week and unlike most other clashes, both films are finding acceptance amongst the audience.

When a film like Rustom and Mohenjo Daro clash at the box office, the impact is minimal because one film (Mohenjo Daro) was rejected outright while the other became a runaway hit at the box office. Rustom became a super-hit, while Mohenjo Daro probably didn’t deserve to collect more than it actually did.

Ae Dil Hai Muskhil and Shivaay didn’t majorly affect each other’s business too, because the Karan Johar directed film performed very well at city multiplexes, while Shivaay proved to be a non-starter at multiplexes and only performed at single-screens and smaller centres.

This week though, is different.

On Day 1, it was a one-sided contest with Raees – riding on better promos, high pre-release interest and the star power of Shah Rukh Khan – swept Kaabil aside.

But it’s on Thursday (holiday) and evening, night shows on Saturday, when the impact of the clash has started to have a real impact on the business of both films.

It’s not the screen or show count here, but when two good films are running in theatres, the audience has to make one choice between two films.

Given the high price of tickets (a movie outing for a family of four, can easily cost anywhere between Rs 2000 – 4000 including snacks etc) very few families can afford to watch two movies in theatres in the same week. In fact, the super performance of Dangal not too along ago, would’ve also had a small impact on both Raees and Kaabil.

On Saturday night, when the word-of-mouth was beginning to come into play, Kaabil isn’t really getting the breathing space that a film like this needed. It’s running on lower capacity screens at multiplexes and it has fewer shows too. The night shows were running to full capacity at several theatres, there was demand for more tickets, but tickets weren’t available.

The business of Raees is getting affected too, else the film would’ve easily collected about 20-30% more than it has so far. Not just because of fewer shows, but also because the audience has to choose between two films.

Shah Rukh Khan won’t get the major grosser (200 crore plus) that does justice to his stardom and stature. He needs to be competing with the likes of Aamir and Salman Khan here. Hrithik Roshan too won’t get a big grosser, even though it’s his first good film in 5 years. Producer and Distributors of both films lose money .

It’s a clash that should not have happened. It’s too late for Raees and Kaabil, but producers of other films should try and avoid clashes like this in the future. The exhibitors lose, the audience lose and the industry – which barely manages to get 10 clean-hits in a year – also ends up losing business.

P.S: We hope that the clash between Tiger Zinda Hai and Rajkumar Hirani’s Dutt biopic is averted and both films get a solo release and the kind of showcasing that they deserve.

  • My best actors
Salman Aamir Ajay Hrithik they are magnificent blends of personalities.
Shah Rukh I liked his earlier day films.
Suniel shetty another actor that faded away best action actor maybe same level with Sunny Deol and Ajay.
Salman and Hrithik aamir most handsome ever

  • @xzone, it’s good that Raees which has been accepted by neutral audience is released in a clash as it can win the clash easily but if happy new year had released in this clash then God knows what would have happened.. Being a Salman fan, I m happy with the Bajrangi bhaijaan release date with partially clash with the Bahubali as if PRDP has released then things may become different.
By the way I loved Raees.. Eventhough I m a die hard Salman fan , my second favourite is SRK and still hoping Raees will do business of 175+ crores as second weekend may provide the needed boost..
Now just hope for Imtiaz Ali film is universal accepted film.so that all non festive box office records can easily shattered..

  • industry – which barely manages to get 10 clean-hits in a year…. This is the current situation and look at their attitude….clash as ego and trash…there are 52 weeks. Grow up guys instead of saying no friendship, industry going backwards etc…. Plus analysis on successful guy’s like Salman n Aamir…edx n Christmas…they make good movies so they are successful…not otherwise. Glamour world lacks sensibility.

  • Abhishek, SRK was probably sucking upto Aditya and Karan hence he avoided clashes with their productions. He hence assured future films with them.

  • Any one reading between the lines can understand that you have been promoting Kaabil over Raees from day 1. Now u r trying to neutralize things by writing such articles. But the damage has been done and it is only your credibility that has taken the hit Indicine when you show such biases. There are some who show bias in an ugly manner (like KRK) and there are some who try to do it intelligently (like you Indicine). But both are observed by users. Not just with Raees but you did that also with Shivaay and Rustom. All these biases on social media doesn’t make any impact on the BO nos it is just your credibility which takes the hit Indicine.

  • Sir, I have had high regards on your website for fact & stats based analysis. But this time around you have been v partial towards Kaabil. All your articles in the last week or so shows inward bias to Kaabil! As a avid visitor to your website, I am very disappointed & saddened.

  • AS STATED EARLIER BY ME… THAT BOTH MOVIE WILL LOSE 50-50CR EACH DUE TO CLASH…

BOTH MOVIES ARE CARRYING POSITIVE WORD OF MOUTH..

THIS CLASH IS NO DOUBT WILL ME WON BY RAEES COZ IT ALREADY TOOK A MASSIVE LEAD.. AND THIS MOVIE IS NOT LIKE DILWALE.

HAPPY THAT BOTH MOVIES ARE WORKING VERY WELL.. BUT ALSO SAD COZ MOVIES LIKE RAEES AND KAABIL DESERVE MUCH BETTER COLLECTION WHAT THEY ARE COLLECTING RIGHT NOW..

ITS EVEN SAD TO SEE MOVIES LIKE..
    HNY
    PRDP
    BANG BANG
    PK

WILL BE AHEAD OF THEM IN TERM OF COLLECTION..

STILL HOPING FIR RAEES TO END WITH LIFETIME OF 175 -180
    AND KAABIL 120-125

    #NEW ERA STARTS

  • As we can c neutral audience not coming to watch Raees dis s happening..Since ra1 from Monday film will over other heroes fan bases not coming from monday onwards SRK fans filling theatre till now neutral audience time s come but dey r not coming even though SRK fans publishing fake reviews at social media..Ouotim Ajay Devgan performance s better than Raees srk so my opinion s not to watch bcoz bakwaas movie it s another Dilwale, hny guys so my advice s to don’t watch to other fan bases/neutral audiences..

  • Stop talking nonsense, Industry needs clashes to expand. The film industry should partner with moneywallahs to bring more theatres to India especially the Bollywood belt instead of whining like Ajay Devg(a)n and Rakesh Roshan.

  • @ Indicine, do you really think Hirani would clash with Salman with Dutt biopic? seriously?

Sanjay Dutt is my fav….more than Salman, Aamir or others……but he could never become the potential he had because of whatever reasons………So, there would be nothing great that people are waiting for bated breath to see a biopic of Dutt.

If you are talking of a biopic of some great achievers like Dilipji, Amitji or sportsperson like Milkha, Mary Kom etc., then yes, people would love to see it…….and moreover if you take the case of Dangal…..it was Aamir’s stardom that gave the Phogat sisters its due……Aamir proved that without Hirani he can make a worldclass movie and create an ATBB…….Also, Hirani being my fav director is yet to give a blockbuster without Aamir……if you kindly note. The biggest example of Aamir’s presence is what it did to Ashutosh Gowarikar’s Lagaan……and all have seen what Ashutosh did without Aamir.

So, there is nothing extraordinary with the Dutt biopic that would cause a ripple if it clashes with TZH next Xmas, looking at the current mass craze for Salman.

  • @hafeez
    Welcome- 72 cr
    Taare Zameen Par- 63 cr

So going by your logic, Akshay should have delivered not 100 cr, but the first 150 cr bollywood grosser with Welcome. How idiotic to blindly add the total of a clash and assume that film would have collected the same with solo release.

Do you mean that a rejected film like Dilwale would have earned 300 cr with solo release??

  • One thing I cleared about @indicine’s above article.they wrote KING KHAN should do competition with salman/aamir.that’s why they’re spreading inactivity against RAEES everywhere.very good keep it up.

yes kaabil despite of a family audience movie still struggling against RAEES.being a gangster movie RAEES raped kaabil up,left, right, centre.

Poor rakeshji is doing manipulation as usual.and jadootards are crying about screen.

BOI.COM shows both has similar trends.but manipulationtards after being raped in OPENING trying to prove their stardom in lifetime by doing excessive manipulation everyday.

And from last decade to this, hrithik topped over each and every star, but he defeated by KING KHAN always and will keep going on same way.because KING KHAN will always remain his BAAP in MEGASTARDOM.which manipulated roshans would have uderstood from RAEES OPENING,ROFL.

  • Its a really dumb statement that audience will have option to select between two fims but in reality audience wants to watch both films but due to high prices one good film will be avoided by the audience and nuetral audience will watch only 1 movie in a month and the other movie they will watch at home in a pirated version or on tv as in 2-3 months they come on tv.

  • Govt. of India and Akshay Kumar tying up to develop app to aid martyrs’ kin…

    Where is the NEWS, Indicine…???

  • SRK power…. Kaabil is far better than Raees(as some are saying) still Raees is earning more than Kaabil .that shows the real power.

  • @indicine, just want to ask that how is Kaabil able to close in on the gap even though the occupancy for both films is almost same and the screen ratio is tilted in favour of Raees. Don’t u smell foul play being an insider??
    Please answer.

  • How come thé official Collections of other big Movies like bb,sultan,pk,få,raees and others are thé same as trade figures, while there are huge difference between trade and producer figures of krrish 3,bang bang and now kaabil?maybe its due to roshan’s Camp and their unique calculator?))))

  • @Raj a big thank you bro brilliantly said and written @indicine wake up plus how come we dont hear Raees all languages collections its only kaabil. Tbh indicine going to keep it discreet and not mention anything as they are sucking off RR all the way

    • @Kamz, give the benefit of doubt and leave our job to us. We’ve been doing it for last 10 years. When Raees hasn’t released in regional Tamil and Telugu versions, how do we report? Only Kaabil has released in Tamil and Telugu.

  • What happened to Indicine seems like another face of Rakesh Roshan. SRK films always clashed with others Mohabatein/MK,OSO/Sawariya, JTHJ/SOS, Dilwle/BM y didnt you place ur valuable suggestion at that time.
But KING is KING the harder he fall the higher he will rise.

  • Dont agree with team Indicine!!

Clash worked in favour of Bajirao Mastani, helped it grab eyeballs big time…..Plus Christmas, Diwali and Eid are festive periods and not only about one holiday!

Clashes would make sense on big festive weekends more so when one of the films does not have a big budget……..just like Sanjay Dutt biopic!!!

  • This is becoming clearer day by day that you guys are promoting kaabil more than raees.Even in saying things about raees you are indirectly promoting for kaabil.

  • Brilliant article Indicine and a great read. We have idiots who are only comparing what’s the better film & whose done better & which film will sustain blah blah blah but no one is realising that both movies have lost out on a minimum of 20 crores net each so far!

I do however believe that on Diwali Eid Christmas – two big films can come out as the neutrals go to cinemas in big numbers.

Hopefully we do not see two Bollywood heavyweights clashing again on normal/one day holiday weekends again – Salman, Aamir, Shahrukh, Akshay, Ajay, Hrithik, Ranbir, Ranveer, Varun need to avoid one another!

  • The collections from BOI are estimates. They don’t have exact tracking of numbers. Check the collections of Kaabil in BOI site:
    Wednesday – 8,00,00,000
    Thursday – 15,50,00,000
    Friday – 7,50,00,000
    Saturday – 10,75,00,000

All the numbers are in zero’s which proves that they don’t have the exact figures of collections. Moreover they don’t track tamil & telugu versions of a movie. Tamil & Telugu versions make one crore a day each. In this case, there is a difference of 2-3 crore/day between the collections reported from BOI and producer. By adding the tamil/telugu versions the gap narrows down to 0.5 crores to 1 crores which I feel is the difference between correct figures and estimated figures.

    Films: (BOI Vs Producer Figures):

Movies BOI Figures Producer Figures Difference
    Dangal 3,62,57,00,000 3,84,00,00,000 22 crores
    PK 3,37,72,50,000 3,40,00,00,000 3 crores
    B.Bhaijan 3,15,49,00,000 3,21,00,00,000 6 crores
    Sultan 3,00,67,25,000 3,00,68,00,000 0
    D3 2,60,63,00,000 2,85,00,00,000 25 crores
    Kick 2,11,63,00,000 2,33,00,00,000 22 crores
    CE 2,07,69,00,000 2,27,00,00,000 20 crores
    3 Idiots 2,01,37,25,000 2,02,00,00,000 1
    PRDP 1,94,30,50,000 2,13,00,00,000 20 crores
    Ek tha tiger 1,86,14,50,000 1,99,00,00,000 13 crores
    B.Mastani 1,83,75,00,000 1,87,00,00,000 4 crores
    HNY 1,78,41,00,000 2,04,00,00,000 26 crores

All movies except D3 did not have a telugu/ tamil release. Looking at above differences, guess who is underestimating the numbers. One should also understand that a difference is a difference irrespective of it is 5 crores or 50 crores. The above table proves two things 1) All actors manipulate their figures. Or 2) BOI is a site which works overtime to make all actors look dishonest.
