Kaabil Trailer Review: Trade and Audience Response

The theatrical trailer of Kaabil was released on the 25th of last month and before we get down to analysing the trailer in more detail, let’s make one thing very clear – the response to Kaabil, in general, is way better than the response that Hrithik Roshan’s last release ‘Mohenjo Daro’ got.

A good response to the trailer was important because Kaabil will be up against Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees. Both films are scheduled to release in theatres on 26 January 2017. It’s a clash that many believe is suicidal because the target audience of both films could be the same – while the films are massy, both the lead stars command a following at urban centres. It’s better to get a solo release than fight over one holiday.

Positives of the Kaabil Trailer:

  • Revenge: It’s Rakesh Roshan’s mind at work here. It’s a genre that his banner specialises in, and they get it right more often than not. The trailer takes you into the happy world of blind, innocent and much-in-love characters, filled with songs and feel good moments. That’s when the villain enters and pretty much destroys all the good. From here on, the audience begin to root for the underdog (Hrithik’s character). Classic good vs evil, David vs Goliath tale, one man against the entire system. Winning formula, huge at smaller centres.. if the execution is right.
  • Fresh pairing: Hrithik’s on-screen pairing with Yami Gautam has received a positive response. The chemistry is there too.
  • Koi Mil Gaya hangover: Hrithik’s performance, especially his dialogue delivery and the innocence that he brings to the character of Rohan reminds you of one of his best performances as Rohit Mehra in Koi Mil Gaya. If his character is likeable in the film, it’s a big win.
  • The villains: It’s important for the villains to look menacing on-screen (something that Ashutosh got horribly wrong in Mohenjo Daro). Ronit and Rohit Roy do. Ronit’s performance will be something to watch out for as he has always been a terrific actor.

Some concerns that Kaabil Trailer raises:

  • Sanjay Gupta: His direction seems to be the biggest concern here. His track record is poor, most films that Gupta has directed have failed at the box office. He excels at action, but emotion is not his forte. Also, films that Rakesh Roshan has produced but not directed (Krazy 4 and Kites), have failed.
  • Small film: The makers have highlighted that Kaabil is a ‘small film with a big heart’, but small film is not something that Hrithik does very often. Most of his films are high on budget and scale, both missing in Kaabil.

To sum it up, while the Kaabil trailer doesn’t really blow you away, there is nothing in there to dislike either. It’s a simple film with all the potential to be a big success at the box office.

The economics are perfect too. Trade sources say, the cost of producing the film was less than 40 crore (without including Hrithik’s fee). There are also reports that Rakesh Roshan has sold the domestic rights to distributors for a reasonable price too, so recovery should not be difficult inspite of competition from a big film.

The numbers:

We asked 26 people in the trade (including theatre owners, distributors, trade veterans etc) for their feedback on the trailer. The response was positive – 21 of them said the trailer was ‘good’, 5 said it was ‘average’, none said it was ‘poor’. None of these people were in any which way associated with Filmkraft Productions, Hrithik Roshan, Rakesh Roshan, Sanjay Gupta or anyone related to the film. Opinions were from known and unbiased sources.

The audience response falls in the ‘fairly positive’ category too. In our poll on Twitter, when we asked if our followers liked the trailer, 62% people voted for ‘yes’ and 38% voted for ‘no’.

We have tied up with three exhibitors to get genuine opinion on the trailer. At one theatre from the Mysore circuit, we got 62 responses, 35 people said they’ll watch the film, 16 said they’ll wait for feedback / reviews, 11 said they’ll skip it. At another theatre in Mumbai circuit we asked 96 people, 53 said they’ll watch the film, 22 said they’ll wait for the reviews and 21 said they’ll skip it. In Delhi, out of 43 people that we asked, 26 said they’ll watch the film, 12 said they’ll wait for reviews and 5 said they’ll skip it.

We believe the response that we get from real people at theatres is far more accurate and unbiased as compared to Twitter and other online polls.

Here’s what some of them said (some comments have been translated from Hindi to English, as accurately as we possibly could):

  • “Will watch it for Hrithik”
  • “It was okay.. Certainly looks better than Mohenjo Daro” (Thik laga, Mohenjo Daro se toh acha hi hai)
  • “Yami and Hrithik are looking good together”
  • “Sanjay Gupta films are always crap (bekar)”
  • “Would watch it, if Raees was not releasing on the same day”
  • “Average trailer.. expected better”
  • “Excellent background music”
  • “Khatam mein karoonga” (a dialogue that’s been liked)

  • Lol nobody really cares who is the director .there are around 10 popular directors and sanjay is not from them. Nobody knows sanjay gupta so his name can’t affect .

It’s trailer is good, but execution will be bad which I m sure.

And after a long time hrithik doing a medium budget movie.! Hrithik needs huge scale movies to get good openings with national holiday .

Opening will be less than 15 with clash because no national holiday like agnepath and bang bang ? and no mega budget looking trailer.

  • Typically ANTI HR……how can you rate MD average and your rating is 7 whereas for KAABIL same rating but instead of average is good and your rating remain the same. The trailer created a buzz over the social media by fetching the most viewed trailer on social networks. you should stop publishing HR news.

  • Good to know that it’s not only me who loved the trailer and i think that this movie will give hrithik his first national award inchallah.
Srk better find another date to release his #rice or whatever.

  • ADHM se competition k baad v two star rating wali Ajay Devgn ki Shivaay ne four star rating wali SRK ki FAN ko dus Din mai he pachad diya. Agar film solo release hoti, to indicine jaise kitne hater ke dukan band kar deti.
Salute to Power of Mr Devgn.

  • Srk and kjo will play double game-I want hrithik to stand like one man army ajay devgan and give them fitting reply….kaabil will thrash Peshawar haklu khans raees left right centre….iam with kaabil

  • lol.
MohenjoDaro also got 7 out of 10 and Kaabil also got 7 out of 10. Whats the difference ?
    Please Clarify Indicine

  • Raees is a must win for SRK, after his 4 debacles continuously.
that particular impact can thrash kaabil, just because srk fans n media will be backing raees completely. certainly, a bad news for hrithik (his bad luck may continue!!)

  • Hrithiks acting will be mind-blowing for sure!!! !!!!! Remember it’s not a normal revenge story but Hrithik is blind!! !!

  • For me…the trailer of Kaabil was well packaged. It was sleek, it shows a the things we could expect (and more) and it ends with a Bang! Everyone is blaming Sanjay Gupta here…but one thing you all should understand is his execution of thriller movies are good, the problem he had was there were no ‘A’ Lister in his movie who could transform his film into another level with his performance. That has changed in Kaabil with Hrithik in it. So put on your seat belt and enjoy the ride!

    #KaabilOnRepublicDay

  • @Indicine

Your rating for Mohenjo Daro and Kaabil trailer is the same? Like really? Then why MJD trailer didn’t have the legs of Kaabil trailer after launching and had only 85% ‘likes’ ratio compared to 94% of Kaabil? And you are saying ‘Force 2’ trailer is a winner in the trade? Oh yeah I forgot the hero is John Abraham whose solo movies are always winners at the BO…Lol!

  • Kaabil will easily cross 250cr in india for sure.. mark my word… Take a screen shot..

HR is back with a bang…

    #Kaabilon26jan

  • It’s not about Kaabil vs Raees. It’s about fans war again.. When they mock at each other when one of that movie fails at BO.. The plot of the movie is not important anymore for them, but collection only. Just like Shivaay vs ADHM. Ajay & Salman fans will support Kaabil for sure LOL! Ranbir fans will support SRK. Wonder why SRK fans ask RR to postpone Kaabil, while its Kaabil first that locked that date & Raees stepped in -_- Enough already -_-

  • The one point you should observe is SRK is struggling to cross 100 crores after HNY…Dilwale, Fan, Dear Zindagi, and Raees all struggled or will be struggling to cross 100 crores. Neither is his any of his future films are raising any curiosity. When Salman and Aamir movies are easily crossing 300 crores, SRK is struggling to cross 100 crores. Moreover his ego is hurting himself then anybody else. Why you want to clash with another A-Star when the A-Star was the first to announce the movie. Is this the start of end of SRK?

  • Firstly indicine gave 9 to #Dangal trailer then In a article they gave 10 to the trailer and also gave 10 to its Starcaste n Interest and Now they r giving 8 to the Trailer ! It seems their are 3-4 admins who are reviewing #Dangal trailer and continuously changing their opinion ! LOL

  • @ navin, the beast, ultron salmanic and tiger the real king

Thanks guys for showing love and support for Raees. We also support Tubelight and ETT.

  • if we talk about overall career then hritik roshan has four record solo opening day collections in his overall career. they are mission kashmir , kabhi khushi kabhi gham, krishh and agneepath. while srk has 3 solo record openers in overall career . they are koyla, main hoon na and happy new year. despite of being much more senior than hr and despite of debuting 8 years earlier srk has lesser record openers than him in overall career, shame on him. on the other hand people underestimates hr too much. he is a much bigger star than srk but the priblem is that his career choices are not good. though kaabil’s trailer was average and raees teaser was excellent but still kaabil can take a better initial just like mk did against mohabbatein in 2000.

  • @ sss

Do not mention. Let us sing this song together

    Bane chaahe dushman zamaana humaraa
    Salaamat rahe dostaana humaara

  • Why didnt u included youtube’s like to dislike ratio…its better than Dangal…Last time you did a review of Mohenjodaro trailer you included that…

  • @koyla-lallu fan, from where KJO SIR came into this clash?ha ha ha ha,I can u.derstand your frustration as how KJO SIR alone raped your 150cr mega budget vfx koyla movie like rat, rofl.

So you jhundwala must have to reunite now to save 50cr disaster jadoo boy ‘s movie against us.but nothing will work when it’s release against KING OF BOLLYWOOD’S MOVIE,all if then simply will be thrashed, rofl.

  • I liked the trailer and its looking thrilling and loved the concept but i wish prakash raj was the main villain instead of ronit roy. I like ronit roy’s acting and taking nothing away from him, he was brilliant in Adalat, balaji telecoms, boss, and few other films, but i wanted to see hrithik facing prakash raj. Prakash raj is very entertaining and at the time very hillarious villain. Watch wanted, singham, dabangg 2 and entertainment and you will know what i mean. ;)
