There comes a time when a strong stand has to be taken against the inflation of box office collections – which has crossed all possible limits with the release of Raees and Kaabil. The theatres are empty but the collections, both films combined, are at record levels for weekdays.
Before we begin, credit should go to Red Chillies and Excel for keeping the collections at reasonable levels throughout the weekend. They probably had no choice but to inflate Monday onwards because the other film would’ve otherwise overtaken them and that would mean negative reports in the mainstream media – which follows official figures. But that’s no excuse for inflation to levels of insanity when the film isn’t even collecting half of what they have quoted.
There’s been plenty of action behind-the-scenes too. A leaked audio clip had a PR instructing her people that the film has to cross a particular number on Monday. The producer of one of the two films had a spat with a leading trade analyst because he did not quote the official figures on his television show. Success has been celebrated multiple times through parties, numerous media interactions claiming victory – even though the final box office numbers of both films wouldn’t do justice to the stardom of both stars.
What’s been most embarrassing for the industry and the trade is the sheer desperation from both sides to spread the word through the media that the two films are bigger successes than they actually are.
From our site’s point of view, exposing the lies and revealing the truth has quite a few negative effects too. We could lose out on visitors, our traffic could drop, because the craze for box office numbers has reached such a stage where people only want to believe the source that quotes the higher number.
But with the producer numbers crossing all limits of sanity, our credibility, which we’ve built over a period of more than 10 years, is at stake. It’s disappointing because we haven’t been able to do what we love to do. We love analysing the trends, predicting the lifetime collections, giving our readers comparisons between different films – unfortunately, inflation of collections has killed our own interest and has also stopped us from posting our daily box office reports.
Some other random thoughts:
- The Indian box office is immensely difficult to track, especially the single screens / fixed rentals. On a daily basis, almost impossible. Most figures that are put out are estimates based on collections from multiplexes, links to live theatre samples, circuit figures etc.
- But inflation even happens at the exhibitor (theatre) level and more so at circuit level – depending on which star or film they are siding with. Very few are neutral and even fewer are honest when it comes to these big films. For example, we receive Rajasthan circuit figures from two different people, and both are quoting different figures for each day.
- The ‘trade source’ which most people quote, has been at it too over the first few days. Not including collections from the dubbed versions is wrong and completely writing off one film on the first day of release itself is unethical, especially in a clash when the reports aren’t as bad a Mohenjo Daro. Also, 5% inflation of one film and 5% deflation (reduction) of the other, can make a massive difference to the final outcome. Which is why we think, if Rakesh Roshan had kept the figures to actual levels, his film would’ve still been at a fairly good total going in to the second weekend.
- Also, who takes into account the ticket sold in the first weekend through brand promoters? Without taking any name, a huge amount of tickets were sold in bulk at discounted prices to corporates and brand promoters in the first weekend, which helped boost the collections. As per information from industry insiders, this itself is about 10% of the first extended weekend collections.
And finally, we are putting our own estimates for the two films. Believing it or not is your choice, but we’ve put in immense amount of work in the last few days gathering data from multiple sources – verifying and reverifying – before putting it out. We are going to stick to these numbers from now onwards and the lifetime total won’t be the official figures released by the producers.
A lot of questions are now going to come up with regards to the data already existing on our website. Like collections of a Krrish 3 or a Happy New Year, but be rest assured that the next couple of months will be spent in changing the data on the website. Both the collections and verdicts will be changed. Stay tuned for more.
Our estimate, day-wise, for both films below. Do note, we haven’t yet verified collections for 2nd Friday, which has been marked with * symbol.

Kudos to Indicine. It was expected from you to take a stand with honest analysis. There is no doubt that you can get wrong sometimes with your analysis but at least its good to believe what you receive from your sources instead from the producers.
I am waiting for your articles when you give your take on boxoffice collection of movies like ETT, CE, kick, Prdp, HNy, K3,bang-2 etc.
Would also love to see your take on box office collection of movies like Pk,Dangal,BB and Sultan when the producers and trade collection is almost similar, is their any chance of something fishy in those movies collection too.
Thanks Indicine for the correct and actual figures. Srk and rakesh roshans are always doing inflamation to their movies from very long time to each of their films. Srk started from when he started red chilies for all of his films. He manipulated to Ra.ONČ and all his films including dilwale and Rees. Rakesh roshans started with Krish3 and kaabil. Shame on them.
Thanks indicine team for taking bold steps by giving actual and real figures.
@ Indicine Very good job and you were right Raees has won this clash by huge margin and Raees is miles away in overseas but Rakesh Roshan is not accepting his defeat.
Who is no.1 in manipulating production house in Bollywood and the award goes to Filmkraft(Rakesh Roshan)
amir-d3-20cr
salman-prdp,kick-20cr
srk-ce,hny-20cr
akshay-sib-20cr
ajay -shivay-15cr
ranbir-barfee-15cr…
so no one is here who dont did manipulation according to trade….its altogether diff that trade can be also manipulator….
my advice stick to either producer figure or trade figure…juat to take stance acc to situation
Nice article. We support you. 100% agree with this article. ???
And Rakesh once said ” Bollywood getting dirtier”. Shame on u Rakesh,…. U r d one who responsible for d dirtier clash wid ur egostic statements, 50:50% wala fundaa & fake collection frm ur calculator. Bollywood & Box office not ur fathers property, behave like gentleman not like dog……….
Dilwale Vs Bajirao
Mohanjodaro Vs Rustam
Was a very clean Clashes we had seen last yr….. Hr knows the box office collection not important wer friendship come, even SRK, AKKI they handled clash wid very friendly, there was no ego… bt bcz of that hypocrite man we r eyeing as well as questioning others movie collection.
And pls Rakesh, dont b dare to call our film industry getting dirtier…..
Hum Fans humare Idols k liye crazy hai. Bt hum bewkuf/ andhe nahi hai.
I am glad that you have created this article. If I don’t talk about inflated figure, at least we now have an evidence against BOI that they are deflating Kaabi’s collection which is 69.50 crore according to them. This is frustrating for us who are HR’s fans because BOI is trying its best to label Kaabil as a flop movie. They are even showing on their site that Kaabil’s budget is 89 crore which is insane. We all know that Kaabil is a small budget movie made out of a budget of only 65 crore. The movie has collected more that this amount and is a clean hit according to your collection report too. But BOI has increased the amount of its budget to make it look like a big budget movie with poor collection. This has to be stopped. We HR fans now have no faith on BOI!!
@indicine now u can predict LBO fr both movies????
though i have promised not to post any comment till tubelight release because of loosing bet but i am posting this only once.
i must say it’s a great step. i wanted it for long time. no website should quote producer figure unless a day will come when people like srk and rakesh roshan will make a 100 crore earning film earn 300 crore. actually posting producer figure is itself illogic because there is no point taking boxoffice numbers from people whose films have released and their everything is on stake.
and now that fake world of 44.97 crore is also going to be broken and nobody is going to ask in this website why salman is the biggest initial giving star despite happy new year holding the highest opening day record.
but i will like to say that i don’t think it’s fair enough to add dubbed versions collections, you can only mention them. the reason is every film does not release in dubbed version so the comparison will be unfair.
as far as people like srk is concerned they will pay for their own sin, and if their is anything after death he will not find a place even in hell.
really a bold and brave move Team Indicine! while other bollywood sites are following the instructions from the producers blindly your job is truely commendable… I’m a Shahrukh Khan fan and I really belive that the makers of Raees had no choice but to inflate the figures to stop negativity around the filmfrom 1st monday onwards while the makers of Kaabil were inflating their figures right from day 1. but as u mentioned that it is no justification to fool people and put the credibility of an entire industry at stake, I condemn this act as a bollywood movie lover. there should be utmost clarity and now it is a crying need to have a credible tracker like rentrack in bollywood industry i belive
I am shocked that some fans are thinking that srk bought 10% of tickets from his own to show his stardom….what the hell are you all have lost it completely just think before typing are you guys watching sunny leone song of raees and typing with one hand diverting your frustrations of your low life in this comments section
115 cr for #raees and 70 cr for #kaabil ..This is the figure given by #boxofficeindia..I believe them..Don’t know about collections being inflated or what..Trade knows better than us..
We as a movie-goers should have two things either loving the film or not liking it..
Leave the Business part to people who r associated with the film financially…
As for me I loved watching both films and I had a great time with my friends…
Finally u make peace indicine. . Bravo step. .
Dnt bother u r visitrs lyk u bcz of ur true views. .
@indicine I m warning you don’t blame raees … They where right from the first day itself … Its rakesh roshan who forced rce to do that … I m with raees … Coz roshan has crossed all the limits of manipulation.. Jawaab denaa zaruru thaa … !!
@Irfan, you’re free to put across your point of view. Let’s not get into warnings and threats. It’s our website, we will report whatever we want to. Two wrongs don’t make a right. So no excuse for inflation just because the other party is doing it.
Lol where were u at the time of prdp bro
@indicine
No outlet ever gave day 1 collection of RAEES below 20 crores. You are the first.
Some outlets gave day1 and day 3 of KAABIL at 7.5 and day5 at 10 cr. You ignored them.
I don’t know what you are trying to do but underestimating SRK’s stardom. And keep on adding all languages collection for kaabil.
You are losing all your credibility.
Well done Indicine for bringing out the truth to public. Kudos to you. It would only bring the public back to you as you have shown the guts to speak the truth.
By any means, the inflated figures are not justified but our producers and fans are just obsessed with numbers rather than quality content.
The vicious game started before the release of both the movies.
1.) SRK announces the release date which was taken by Roshans and that too without discussing them. Although anybody is free to announce a release date any day but normally the big actors or producers don’t take over others date absurdly.
2.) SRK goes into a deal of 60% – 40% screen ratio on the day before release with the multiplexes using Baahu Bali’s as a stepping shoulder. Though many fans give budget as a reason for the 60-40 split but that is something not followed in the past.
3.) Roshans did not get a good start and they started inflated from day 1 which was unethical.
4.) Red Chillies and his fans started a -ve PR for Kaabil on the social media. They were hell bent to declare Kaabil is a bad movie rather then saying Raees is good.
5.) Red chillies went into a deal with a big website (providing so called trade figures) to overstate the earnings of their film and understate Kaabil earnings.
6.) Red chillies also started inflating from Monday ( and joined the league) when they see Raees not finding acceptance. But this is nothing new to Red Chillies as they have done it with CE, HNY etc.
7.) SRK had his aura and charm which made him King khan and he should not resorted to these type of tactics. It only goes to prove that how insecure he feels against his rivals and the young generation stars. He should be responsible for his downfall.
@Irfan : Tu kar kya legaa ?? Ek toh tera idol manipulator aur ch0r upar se tera seena zor ??? Get lost you chameleon, shameless retard.
It has become battle of Egos now. Both Srk & Rakesh uncle have gone crazy with their respective calculators.
Too much manipulation !!!!!!
Lifetime silence to those people who still believe in Box Office India figure after reading this article!
Well said @indicine This is ridiculous from both…
I believe if it is as clear as u stated (and rightly so), trade portals should also boycott dummy figures & should report correct ones… I suggest u to start with yourself & start posting correct ones…
If the fake figures will not be spread by Media (u r a part of Media), this fake practice will die its own death…
It was a busy day for me so I checked recently about the 2nd Friday collection (official) of Raees and Kaabil. Raees – 6.50cr , kaabil – 6.40cr. Are bhai how can the collection increased from Thursday to 2nd Friday when even best wom movies like Dangal, BB & PK collections were lesser than their first Thursday.
It is quite obvious that when two big movies clashes than it is fun to see which movie will be bigger? It will be more interesting when you are a nuetral person in clash. But I have never seen a funny clash like Raees & Kaabil. Here initially the race was for who collecting more on box office and now it changed to who will manipulate more in collection from day 6. All in all suddenly we are loosing interest in box office collection.
Raees – 128cr, Kaabil – 97cr. Combine both is 225cr+ and after weekend their total will be 250cr+, and lifetime will be 300cr+
Kudos to calculator of RCE & Filmkraft. Though I will still blame more to Roshans that force to Raees to manipulate after weekend but still two wrong can’t make any one right as said by indicine.
Now srk , roshan and baba gurmeet sing are the same level.ha ha ha…..
SALUTE
Proud Of you INDICINE, you have proved that you are the best & the most UNBIASED website
Really thanks from the bottom of my heart for showing the corruption in bollywood
@ honest man, listen SRK is also a man.Raees collection were same as trade figures for 5 days.but how long anyone tolerate when other person is doing wrong.don’t behave like a saint.and SRK will not find a place in hell ? So who will find ? The man who does nothing good in his whole life ! these things don’t happen in reality.so be practical.

@7:46pm epic reply by Indicine to that paki peasant ‘@irfan’ at 7:38pm… if you dont like this websites POV then go to another website like ‘The Pluto Times’ where they will tell you that Shootout At Paglapur has collected 400cr in 1st week…!
@Indicine…Finally you spoke..But its late indicine as your cridibility is questionable for sure now.. You only spoke when this game is started by red chillies entertainment too.. Before that you kept on posting those inflated figures of kaabil without any question.. And tell me honestly, had the producers of raees not started inflating their numbers would you have posted this article now? You clearly over promoted kaabil as compared to raees and never questioned thier official numbers but when raees team started doing the same then it backfired you and to save your own credibility you finally came with this article..
Both krafests are utter garbage so really sad to see both producers resorting to such devious tactics just to make their gullible immature fans believe each film is a success…!
Both are flops so time to move on ppl
