Q. Do you think that the percentage of ‘class’ audience in India is decreasing every year? From 2000-2009, the highest grossers of most years were classics / good films like Kaho Na Pyaar Hai, Gadar, Devdas, Koi Mil Gaya, Veer Zaara, 3 Idiots etc. But now films like Ek Tha Tiger, Dhoom 3, Bodyguard etc are the highest grossers. What could be the cause behind this? – Nipun Kumar
A. The logic behind the question is flawed. How is a film like Koi Mil Gaya and Dhoom 2 (highest grosser of 2006) different from Ek Tha Tiger or Dhoom 3? For a film to be the highest grosser of the year, it has to appeal to every section of the audience – simple as that. Also, you can’t gauge the increase or decrease of ‘class’ audience by looking at the highest grosser of the year.
The so-called ‘class’ audience is not decreasing, but increasing with every year, thanks to the growing number of multiplexes. About a decade ago, films like Queen, Vicky Donor, Kahaani, OMG! Oh My God, English Vinglish and many others wouldn’t have worked at the box office. Today, there is an audience for such films to grow on word-of-mouth publicity and even affect the business of big films.

But for last 15 years I have found in every newspaper, news channels, wikipedia, celebrity interview that these films were box office success except andaz apna apna but your website is the only place in this world where these films have been insulted and that is extremely disheartening for me as every article on current films that you publish are absolutely fabulous.
Either you have made a mistake by giving wrong verdicts or the entire media had been lying for past two decades.
Come on indicine,give a reply.don’t hide
@Arjun Kapoor, Haha! Hide from someone who uses a celeb name?
Anyway, give me a link to any credible ‘trade’ website or magazine that calls Dil Chahta Hai a hit? These gossip journalists and magazines have absolutely no knowledge about the trade. Dil Chahta Hai and most other films that you mention, did well only in select few centres.
And if you want a response next time, be nice or don’t bother! Thanks.
@indicine: I totally disagree with you, when you say that only Dhoom & Krish series are senseless or had loopholes. Name one movie which had complete sense in it without loopholes. Which SRK or Sallu movie had sense in it without loopholes…A movie is made just to entertain the audience, not to make any sense of them…Indicine hope you correct yourself…
I have always spoke politely with you.but you took 5 weeks to answer me so I lost my temper a bit ,sorry for that but I will soon be posting links to every that have termed that these films as success.hope you correct your mistakes after thay as I am still a big fan of you.
@indicine:finally thanks for your take to my question.gud to see dat u people are active and replying to ur followers.
Yeah,my question was a bit flawed.may be becoz i cudn’t translate my thinking properly.i actually wanted to tell dat in earlier years,it was mainly content and WOM for which movies were becoming highest grosser.but today it’s mainly stardom and hype. Also, today a newcomer’s film cann’t be highest grosser like knph n mpk.
It’s not about class and mass audience. Nowadays some stars like Aamir Khan have corrupted the system by excessive marketing and hype of trash films like Ghajini, raising ticket prices and drawing audience and declaring film superhit on opening alone.
Earlier films needed to have a long run and actually appeal to audience before being declared hit.
These days audience comes after hype. By the time they realise what kind of a film it is, the film has already broken records!
There is no masses or classes, rather naive audience that blindly believes hype.
@nipun but even today a film needs to have minimum good word of mouth to become a supehit.u and few orhers disliked dhoom3,ce,ett,yjhd,dabangg etc but that doesn’t mean dhoom3 was rejected by a vast majority as a box office success or failure is always always an accurate reflection of vast majority’s acceptance or rejection of a film
Deepu plz go and file a P.I.l against aamir, srk, salman.i can gutantee u that u will loose the case badly because u r talking insane.
People like u,nipun, rajeev massmd, mayank sekhar should b given free tickets and citizenship of u.s
a. where u can spend ur entire life watching great ,logical, justified hollywood hits like godzilla, transformers, fast and furious etc
@indicine go and check ur own article published on april 26th, 2012 where have u said dostana had earned cult status and was eightth highest grossing film of the year.that means u accepted it as a hit but in abhishek, johns carrer analysis u termed them avg.
I m cming with my second proof soon
@arjun kapoor don’t be hyper, i already told you it doesn’t mean what is the verdict of those films on different sites or newspaper. But at the end their verdict is debatable. You can use whatever verdict you want but can’t force anyone. All the movies you are mentioned were ranges from avg to hit. End of the they all were successful though not a big success.
@sky I m not being hyper induvine me to given proofs and I have given them 12 proofs of three films.all I want indicine to accept them as success and include them in the list of hit films of actor that starred in them.u can’t tolerate injustice
@Arjun Kapoor, by posting comments in every article asking for a response, your comment is only going to get deleted. So stop spamming and be patient. Do also note that we are not answerable to anyone. If you don’t believe our verdicts, you can refer or believe any source that you want to.
Also, do you understand the meaning of ‘proof’ from a reliable ‘trade’ magazine or website? Just by saying newspapers, magazines, wikipedia (which can be edited by anyone) is not proof. Provide links or send us screenshots or scans.
Check BOI and see where Dostana is listed. It was a average grosser considering the costs. Jai Ho is almost certain to be in the Top 10 grossers of 2014, but that doesn’t mean the film is a huge success. So read and learn about how the trade works before you comment.

@karthik which srk film has sense? how many films of srk I have to count? this is the answer for you 1) Hey Ram 2) Devdas. 3)kal ho na ho 4)swadesh 5) cdi 6) mnik etc etc. but I can’t give name of salman khan films. @nipun u r biased towards hritik. how come krish of 2006 film better then oso. see the review of Best Indian critik Rajiv masand review of both the films oso was entertaining film while krish was boring film.
Thanx indicine for replying.now u want me to five screen shots or links or scans then I will he doing that also.mai insaaf ke liye kuch bhi kar sakta hu.
