Is the Dilwale trailer releasing too late?

In the last #LiveQnA session that was held on Sunday, nearly 350 questions were posted. We couldn’t answer all of them on Sunday, so we will try and answer a few more questions today.

Q. Isn’t it too late to release ‘Dilwale’ trailer just 1 month before release?

A. The trailer of Shah Rukh Khan’s Dilwale releases about 40 days before the theatrical release of the film. There will be ample time to effectively market an entertainer like Dilwale. Quite a few big films have released trailers of their films less than 45 days before the film hit theatres. The trailer of Salman Khan’s Bodyguard was released on 21st July 2011, the film was out 40 days later on 31st August 2011. Chennai Express trailer was also launched about 50 days before the film, the film was a huge success. On the other hand, Ra One theatrical promo was released months before the film, but it didn’t do as well as it should have.

In fact, releasing trailers of films way too early, can negatively impact the business of a film. For example, the makers of Akshay Kumar’s Baby released the trailer of their film on 3rd December, 51 days before the film released in theatres. But Baby did not have song promos to sustain the buzz that the trailer had generated. The result was a huge void, which was probably one of the reasons why Baby did not take a great opening at the box office.

The trailer of Dilwale is expected to be out on November 11 and the makers will be releasing one song promo every week, before the film eventually releases in theatres on December 18 2015.

A lot of people have also asked us if it’s a better idea for Dilwale to release on Dec 25, instead of Dec 18. Since all the holidays are 25th onwards, it does sound like a better date, but Shah Rukh and the team behind Dilwale are well aware of the pros and cons of each date. More often than not, it’s the smaller film that postpone / prepone their film to make way for a bigger film. Postponing Dilwale for Bajirao Mastani would create negativity. It doesn’t make much business sense either, as the makers of Dilwale have already acquired those important single-screens in mass centres. Bajirao Mastani is not the kind of film that is expected to make waves at single screens. Business at multiplexes will be divided. The number of shows will be about 25-30% lower than what it would get with a solo release, which will make it extremely difficult for the film to break opening / weekend records. Much like the opening day of Bang Bang, which would have been in the range of 30 – 35 crore, if not for Haider. These records can sometimes be important as when the mainstream media picks it up and makes it their headline, the film gets free publicity across news channels / newspapers, which results in increased footfalls during the all-important first weekend.

The big worry for both sides would the response that each film gets. If Bajirao Mastani is rejected and Dilwale is accepted, the impact of the clash on Dilwale won’t be more than 5-10% (as compared to a solo release). If both films carry good word-of-mouth, then the impact on both could be 15-30%, with Bajirao getting more affected than Dilwale. In case Dilwale is rejected and Bajirao finds appreciation, then the result could be similar to Jab Tak Hai Jaan vs Son Of Sardaar clash. Dilwale, due to its genre and SRK’s presence, should be the bigger grosser, irrespective of how it’s received.

mark my words, dilwale will be a critical n commercial failure. I will say the same for Neil Nitin Mukesh Paayo as well..

Infact u will see after 2 months that Tamasha has done 200cr biz while PRDP,dilwale will b stuck at meagre 160cr-180cr biz..

  • @indicine.. I am not a Srk fan neither I dislike Srk.. I was just pointing out the fact that most of the articles are related to dilwale only.. It sometimes gives indication of a biasedness which I hope is not the case here.. Yes I am a Salman fan but it doesn’t mean that I hate srk.. I was just giving my view in order to improve indicine site..:)

  • Want to know about prdp or dangal or any other movie comment on ALIA BHATT MAGAZINE COVER article..as we have plenty of articles of other actors, movies today…

  • @ babuji ki thullu, I have great respect for akki I hope housefull 3 become a big hit for akki I’m happy the way u treat srk with significance.
    Airlift should come with dilwale.
but I hated that u supported shiv sena
I’m only upset becoz it is involved with srk Raees don’t care about mahira whosoever.

  • Trailer was coming on 2nd Nov which was a perfect date bec of FAN it got delayed still it’s not late.

By the way @Indicine : If both sides really want to avert clash ( specially SLB team since they must be and have to be worried more bec of many obvious reasons ) the only solution for Dilwale vs Bajirao Mastani clash is Bajirao Mastani should prepone to 11th December & Bajirao mastani team should request SRK-Rohit team to postpone Dilwale to 25th Dec, in this case Bajirao mastani will also get 3000 + screens on 11th dec and on 25 dec Dilwale will also get 4000 + screens.

This is better idea than clashing & hurting each other films.. Dilwale has ability to become blockbuster with clash even if it gets good wom but the main problem is for BM team .

  • Indicine you are srk fan you prove that no article on prdp i think you should publish article in equal base of all bollywood news
In one day you publish most of article on srk this thing make this website boring

  • One regret is that Salman Khan agreed to allow this trailer to be released with his film, but I guess after SRK could not get anyone else to do it Salman obliged

  • Someone should give this idiot tissue Ranbir rocks .
I’m sorry to say Ranbir is no longer a star than bombey velvet fame haha

  • My advise for those who think indicine publishing too much articles regarding srk, make your own website and publish articles there regarding ur fav stars as much as u want

  • @babaji ka thullu Same goes for brothers as well……
    Release date 14 Aug
    Trailer came on 10th June
Gap of 2 months ……. But in this period everyone was expecting dharma and fox star to promote and market it heavily to create a hype which a big budget movie of over 100+ requires ……….. Becoz nowadays if a movie is not promoted and marketed heavily then it wouldn’t take those huge initials at the box office………… but it came as a big surprise that being a Dharma Production movie they didn’t promoted it the way they are known…………
Although the movie was not that good if not bad but with solid marketing and promotions the movie could have easily registered 75 + weekend………

  • @indicine

Makers of BM & PRDP also released making videos.. but no article on that…!

But you are making article for each on set picture of Dilwale.

Its your site so do what ever you want….but if people hits your site for news related to bollywood then you should think about it.

Already srk fan clubs are exposed on twitter as they are working for Red chilli for money.

So now it become hard to trust in sites also.

Hope you are not part of it.

  • Dont know why Salman fans r getting jealous. Recently we saw huge no. of articles on BB and once PRDP releases there will be another no. of articles. So just chill.

  • @MUSCAT : Go back to Oman and keep dreaming !!!!!!!!!! There is no way BRM will surrender its screen from second day !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • But bang bang was released in 3800 screens which were enough for 30 plus .
Singham returns did 32 cr in 3500 screens …! Loose point .

BTW dilwale looking like a huge film .

  • Who cares when trailer is releasing and when this Diwale is releasing !!!!!!!!!!!!!

    This Chrsitmas :

Maratha warrior vs Maratha mandir (with beard)

    Too much fun !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Sanjay leela bhansali ‘s biggest mistake in his life is
    Not changing BM release date…
Its release date should be between 24-26 January……… If SLB DID not Change BM date the film Collection will be Less than 75 crs
And DILWALE ‘S Collection will be nearly 350 crs domestic and worldwide nearly 800 crs broking pk’s Record
    BELIEVE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • It doesnt matter if its srk or salman or aamir. Dilwale is a srk big movie n it sure is gonna earn much more than what bajirao may earn. How much more will depend on how well it is received. Atleast 200cr is on cards even if its just ok. 250 crs on otherwise. For bajirao, it wld do very well to earn 125 crs , n thats possible only if the film is received very well! Opening weekend 80 crs for dilwale and 30 – 40 crs for bajirao!

  • @indicine ur last #Askindicine season was not good .. U only give answer to FAQ .. Not to answer unique question.

  • Today, indicine failed to publish another big news of Salman khan’s that PRDP got U certification. Why, it isn’t a big news?

  • @indicine is the best boxoffice site.

they should know that indicine is always saying that Salman is inarguably the biggest superstar in country and Amir is undisputed king and srk is most consistent.indicine is best site
