Question: How much did the industry lose in the month of November? How are they sustaining with such huge losses? – Vikas (New Delhi)
Answer: The losses theatrically are around Rs 100 crore for the month of November. ‘The Shaukeens’ was made on a budget of 39 crore (estimate) including all costs, and the theatrical recovery was around 14 cr. YRF’s ‘Kill Dil’ too was made on a budget of around 40-45 crore including advertising costs. Share from India and overseas business was 20-21 cr.
Then came the year’s biggest disaster. The costs of Happy Ending were around 60 cr, recovery from theatrical business was less than 25%. Ungli too was a disaster, costs of around 32 crore (including inflation for delayed release). Recovery was less than 10 crore.
In short, the distributor share for the entire month of November from 4 major films was 60 cr against costs of Rs 175 crore. Satellite rights will recover some of the losses, but the industry as a whole is completely shaken.
Action Jackson was supposed to give some relief, as Prabhu Dheva films have always been commercially successful. But that film could go on to be as big a disaster as Happy Ending.
For the industry to sustain, the overall quality of films has to improve. A better balance between quality films for the classes (Queen, Vicky Donor, Kahaani for example) and entertaining films for the masses that also appeals to the city audience has to be achieved (Rowdy Rathore, Singham, Kick, Golmaal series).
Which brings us to the film that could potentially strike the perfect balance. Rajkumar Hirani’s PK. If PK doesn’t work, the industry will take a long long time to recover. The disastrous performance of Action Jackson and four films from November, has only increased the trade expectations from PK. Aamir Khan never fails, we hope he doesn’t this time around too.

I am among those peole who love watching movies of all genres. Who said that masala films are not good? Then What are these Ghajini,Agneepath,OSO and Even dabbang etc? Were theyn’t good? But if you are making shits like R Rajkumar,Zanjeer,Himmatwala etc, they will underperform. They deserve to be disaster.
I mean movies like Ghajini,Agneepath,OSO and Dabbang etc are watchable.
Yeah now all eyes are on Aamir and PK
Let’s hope Aamir can once again turn the saviour of bollywood
Absolutely flop MATERial !!

Waiting for FAN and Raees.
The another genre which is irritating me now is Rom Com becoz many movies of that genre are not only highly predictable, but also forgettable. When films like HTP and Khoobsurat are being made,it’s okay. But GTPM?DEI? Seriously!
My personal favourite genres are sci-fi and intense love story. I love watching action thriller too.
Now It’s the time for some changes. Happy that people are responding to the stupidity of film-makers.bad films are flopping now! Ofcourse, bollywood should develop its standrd now. Agreed,we cann’t simply expect b’town to make sci-fis like some ambitious Nolan’s films or any Edge of tomorrow now becoz we don’t have enough money ! But we can match upto them in some other genres. Also, when films like K3,Ra1 are being made, they should get more support compared to regular masalas.
i think pk will also not earn big moolah even if turn out good movie which it will. my prediction for pk is below than 180 cr, btw i am eagerly waiting for pk
@Nipun
Agreed. Ra One was an attempt. Yes, it was flawed but it tried to do something. It had ambition. Compare that to Happy New Year. Most jokes were singularly unfunny. Some were in fact quite racist. Farah just tried to cash in on SRk and Diwali. And she conned the audience with an assault of a promotion.
Same with Bang bang. Which tried to cash in on Hrithik and Kat. Content was a big zero. Krrish 3 again was an ambitious attempt. I’d any day prefer K 3 and Ra 1 instead of BB and HNY!
@nipun hw cn u say romcom is getting irritating when so many romcomslike humpty, htp, yjhd cocktail, sdr hv bcm hits in past few yrs
The coming month could change the fortunes of Bollywood.PK is expected to do good business but it would depend on word of mouth.Tevar’s trailer is disappointing but the story would be good since it is a remake of one of the most loved Tollywood movie Gilli.Baby is looking amazing and it could be Akshay’s biggest hit of his career.
Again all eyes on khan just exclude khandaan from bollywood and imagine the losses then
@arjun kapoor
u mad???
tevar and 100 crs???
bhai aap kamaal ki comedy karte ho. it would be the first disaster of 2015.
no one will go to watch aunty and boring kapoor.
@Nipun
Can’t believe you said Zanjeer is bad. Are you serious? Zanjeer is “Gunda” of this decade. It had the best dialogue of decade:
“Chicken and chicks are the 2 meows of life!” :D :D
but I agree there shd b some quality control happening otherwise there cn b another repeat of this disastrous period.I think there r far too films being made.instead reducing d quantity of films will ny only help in increasing success percentage but also increase longivity of every film
Octbr realse happy new year changd the mind of audience to boycott all upcoming films has they felt cheatd and wre severly torturd inside cinema halls some guys wre pulling their hairs out of wrath
@gj007: Yeah! BangBang could have been much better with a better story and a skilled director! It had only 3 good things: Hrithik’s wonderful performance,Brilliant locations and well-choreographed stunts. Sid Anand is a director for mostly rom-coms like Salaam-Namastey,Tara rum pum,Bachna aae haseeno,Anjana Anjani etc.
Also, Happy New Year was a bad film with so many flaws from the starting to end. Direction,Script,Editing and even an important element like “choreography” were not impressive. The saving grace was the performances, even though this movie never gave much scope on acting.
C’mon, Indicine!! It has been pretty obvious! Why do you hate Ajay Devgn? AJ Ne Aap Ka Kya Bigada Hai?
@arjun Kapoor: that was my personal view. Some Rom-coms are good though like I mentioned. But i feel there are so many rom-coms coming in a year.
pk mania is coming it will take bollywood into good phase
really now bollywood totally depend on khans this year two movies crosses 200cr which was khans movie again only pk has chance so industry totally depend upon khans now.
@Arjun Kapoor: Byomkesh bakshi has been postponed to 10th April…
I hope PK does really well..
@Big b stop talking nonsense and at least don’t insult the great man by posting stupid comments under his name
@gj007 bang bang was gud film. Me n frnds enjoyed every bit of it.
Katrina looked smoking hot.
2015 will give good films to bollywood..there is
BABY
Badlapur
Phantom
DBB
Mr.X
Brothers
Humaari adhuri kahani
Dil dhadakne do
Bajirao mastani
Jagga jasoos
Roy
And then there might be some films that sprung up a surprise..Films like queen, kahaani,Vicky donor were’nt anticipated ones..But are now favourites of many people…!!!
@nipun agree wid u bro.. Rom-com are the safest bet. Karan johar has mastered it. Cast alia bhatt , cast any average young actor.
Copy punjabi film’s badshah khan’s rap saturday saturday in ur film. Copy a melodious track of rahat fateh ali from punjabi movie like samjhawan.
Put some senseless gags, cliche emotions, wedding songs.
And rom-com is ready. Promote it heavily like dharma.
Making crime thrillers/sci-fi is tough job. Lots of thinking goes into it like cast, script, actings, twists, suspense.etc
“Aamir khan never fails,we hope he doesn’t this time too”. I completely agree with this statement.and aamir khan won’t fail..the combination of aamir khan and rajkumar hirani is as big as any other brand today so an earth shattering opening is definitely on cards.
Pk will be and it has to be industry’s first 300 crore grosser
again..too much expectation from pk..220 will be good target..over-hyp will kill the enjoyment of final outcome..i don’t think even amir or raju hirani expecting the 300cr from pk..so let first it collects 200 dn anything above it will be win win situation..all the best for pk
Arjun kapoor really irritating with his involving in each comments his youngistan movies. Each comment contains humpty. 2states.htp. gunday or villain. Are u able to think abt anything except your fckn youngistaan?
