Only 7 Hindi films have managed to cross the 10 crore mark on a single day at the box office this year. Only two have crossed the 20 crore mark (Housefull 3 and Sultan) and only one film (Sultan) has crossed 25 / 30 / 35 on a single day.
Salman Khan dominates the list with Sultan occupying the Top 5 spots. Even the 11th day collections of the film finds a place in the Top 25 days this year. 9 days of Sultan has the 10 crore mark and on Sunday, that number will increase to 10.
The only film that has a chance to challenge Sultan this year will be Aamir Khan’s Dangal. The third day will be a big holiday (Christmas / Sunday) and if the film carries good word-of-mouth, a 40 crore plus total ‘could’ be a possibility.

Salman is really unlucky to have missed out on having the HGOAT with ETT, BB & now with Sultan, so near yet so far kind of situation for him and it has partially got to do with the release time , Eid holidays are no doubt best for opening day & weekend collections but just by the sheer lack of holidays in the corresponding weeks (Eid 2013 was some what an exception ) it is difficult to make life time records even if the content is great like in case of BB & sultan , so aamir is slightly lucky in this aspect but still we have to give it to this man , no amount of holidays can help a movie’s lifetime collections without great content (unless ofcourse it is a Salman Khan movie ) and that is exactly what Aamir has been doing since the last few years during xmas.
Dhoom 3 was a bad film alright but still bcos of the presence of aamir & franchise factor coupled with release time helped in it becoming the biggest grosser of all time back then.
Ett vs 3 idiots: while the later was one of the best films ever made ETT was an average movie at best and still with that type of content it missed out on beating 3 idiots by a whisker , solely due to Salman ‘s starpower and fractionally supported by kat, yrf, kabir & it’s music (mind u all , kabir Khan wasn’t still the hot property at that time!)
BB vs PK: Both being great films , pk was more controversial , BB was one of the greatest films ever made and surely the greatest film of this decade , while pk had 3 open weeks , no competition BB had to compete with the mighty bahuballi from the day it was released and also drishyam (which too was as great movie) released few days later didn’t help its cause either . Few may say the difference between pk’s & BB’s domestic collections was more than 20 crores so there was no way BB could have out grossed pk , is it ?? Bahuballi (only Hindi version) before the release of BB had collected around 48 crores and after the release of BB a staggering 60+ crores , so had there not been a behemoth like baahubaliii BB would have collected atleast 30+ crores than what it had actually collected , so had there been no competition with baahubali BB would have had become the 1st Hindi movie ever to collect 350+ Crores in india, also the average ticket price of BB throughout its run was lesser than pk and ofcourse BB had the highest footfalls for any movie this decade!
While 3 idiots & pk had great content to help them to become the HGOAT , BB had salman’s stardom first & great content later and in the case of ett it was stardom alone !
In case of sultan , its a combination of stardom & content and for the reason that it had not had many open weeks it will fall behind both pk & BB, it had only 2 partial holidays other than sundays and those partial holidays were inside its first week because of which it has thrashed all the existing records by a margin , I believe had it got an extra holiday or 2 in its 2nd week in its weekdays & an extra open week (though competition from GGM is negligible as it is a complete washout all over , it did snatch some significant number of screens from sultan going into the 2-3 weeks) it would have surely surpassed pk’s collections but unfortunately it looks like sultan would now just crawl over 300 crores and would finish under 306 crores!
I am in no way belittling aamir’s stardom or his unprecedented unparalleled BO success, he still is the 2nd biggest Bollywood superstar in our country after salman but I am just stating the obvious that why Salman’s movies like ett or BB or even sultan weren’t able to become HGOAT (Salman as the biggest megastar deserves them more than anyone else).
Salman or Aamir by the virtue of their superstardom & unparalleled BO success deserve a solo EID & Xmas release respectively but it would be interesting if they swap their release dates for atleast a year and come up with good movies , salman during xmas & aamir during eid would be very interesting as these days even Salman is doing good movies but he is still no where near to aamir as the later is still the undisputed king of the content oriented movies! Expecting Dangal to be equally true to his trait!
Few may ask, Salman released his sequel Dabaang 2 during xmas na then why didn’t it become the HGOAT? The answer is simple , D 2 is one of the worst Salman Khan movies ever & one of the worst sequels ever made of an iconic movie and yet it was huge BB that year , thanks to salman’s superstardom!
