Has Happy New Year under performed at the box office?

Question: Has Happy New Year under-performed at the box office? It was expected to collect 250 crore in India and become the highest grosser overseas given the way it was promoted – Rajesh (Chicago).

Answer: A film that has grossed more than Rs 330 crore worldwide in just 13 days cannot be called a under-performer. Like Bang Bang, Happy New Year too is being perceived as a film that hasn’t live upto expectations, not because it has fared poorly, but because the pre-release expectations both within the trade and amongst fans was unrealistically high – which is the case with most big releases these days.

A star can only bring his audience to theatres in the first 2-3 days, after which the content takes over. Happy New Year took a extra-ordinary opening, but failed to sustain well enough over the weekend and during its first few weekdays. But the film has now held steady and picked up on holidays.

Happy New Year will finish its run as the 5th highest grosser both in India (after Dhoom 3, Krrish 3, Kick, Chennai Express) and the overseas markets (after Dhoom 3, 3 Idiots, My Name Is Khan and Chennai Express). Worldwide, the Shahrukh Khan starrer could beat Salman’s Kick, depending on how well it does in its 3rd weekend.

Overall, Happy New Year is a profitable venture for all involved.

  • HNY had negative WOM so how holidays will give boast to the movie? When movie is not liked holiday will not give any boast to collections. Bang Bang and HNY has proved if WOM is bad no amount of holidays will give boast to collections. Plus top stars can bring audience to theaters for 2 or 3 days after that movie has to run on it’s merit. No actor be it Aamir, Salman or SRK or Hrithik can bring audience in theaters after 3 days if movie is bad maximum 3 days people will go for star after that it is left for movie and it’s content.

People who are saying HNY had bad WOM is not liked, etc. Fact of matter it has done around 194 Corers in which we can say audience came for SRK for first 3 days after that people came for movie. Decide yourself it is liked or not.

    Over and out.

  • HNY has hurt the ego of SRK. As far as the Hit status is concerned, a crap film was Ra.1 too was called a Hit by some trade sites. It’s a good strategy overall, inflate the collections and deflate the budget. It can never go wrong.

  • HNY is about to reach 200 cr. It is commendable for any movie to hit that figure. Agreed.

However, still it has underperformed, because of following reason –

    1) It was hyped by the makers, pr, media or whatever to be a blockbuster. It fell short.

    2) It was srk’s and farah’s magnum opus. but just a hit status doesn’t justify it.

    3) All other factors of no competition, top billed actress, multi-star cast and biggest holidays were in its favour. Hence a blockbuster status could have been better fit.

All in all, HNY did good, but just felt short.

May be the strategy, as pointed out earlier, of not releasing on Diwali, might have just backfired on the makers. For 6-7 crs advantage to create record they threw away a 25cr opening day collection that could have added atleast 15cr to the overall collection.

  • @asad,

i guesss indicine can reply you better.

The status of hit, superhit, blockbuster etc. is given by calculating the profit after considering the budget.

The movies that you mention made huge profits compared to its budget that gave them blocbuster status, while HNY made on 140 to 160 cr budget should have collected atleast 240 cr to get that status.

Even 100 cr collection movie can have blockbuster status, but only if the budget say is around 30-40 crs.

  • how is kick domestic gross calculated ?? 233 nett means 233*4/3= 310.667 crores ..same way happy new year domestic current nett = 194.50 crores so current domestic gross collection = 194.50*4/3 = 259.33 crores so current worldwide gross = 259.33 + 80 = 339.33 crores ..so why is there a difference of 20 crores in actual collection & your collections ?

  • its a superhit , it was supposed to be a blockbuster. In that sense it has under-performed. However, the trailer was not well-recieved, music didn’t work much , in that sense the film has made more thn decent money. Performed or under-performed is based on your own expectation

  • Happy new year
