Haider, Queen or PK – Which film deserved National Award?

The results of the prestigious 62nd National Awards were declared yesterday. Queen was declared the best Hindi film of 2014 (not to be confused with Best Popular film which went on Mary Kom), ahead of more acclaimed films like Haider (which won several awards in other categories), PK and Ankhon Dekhi.

Surprisingly, Rajkumar Hirani’s PK was completely ignored and a mediocre film like ‘Mary Kom’ was given the National Award for ‘Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment’.

In most year-end lists, Mary Kom wasn’t even amongst the Top 10 films of 2014, let alone the best of the year.

If films like ‘Mary Kom’ get National Awards, filmmakers in the future would simply make films on famous Indian personalities like Mary Kom, Sachin Tendulkar, Dhyan Chand or Abdul Kalam to win arguably the most prestigious award in the country.

Which film do you think deserved the National Award for ‘Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment’? Tell us.

  • The simple answer for this is PK.

The most popular film is the film that became more “popular”. PK was the most popular among all the films. It was also the most awaited movie and the most seen movie of the year.

I bet, the issue of religion and the message of the movie was the reason that it was ignored.

Anyways, 2-3 years down the line, no one will even remember this half-baked movie Mary Kom, but PK will always be etched in your minds. The real legendary boxer Mary Kom deserved a much much better tribute to her achievement. Hope someone will come up something interesting in the future.

  • I think Kick and Holiday should win best popular film as they were popular, good movies, and entertaining and were liked by critics as well. They deserve it more than pk. If pk was directed by someone else, it would have sure been rejected by India but due to Hirani, it worked!

  • i think it was given so to please the north eastern people of our country…else haider deserved to be the best film

  • @nipun,I thought you’re a sensible film watcher, you too is not different from other 2rs masala film watchers.really HAIDER is below queen even pk?????go with your critics to your hell.I am pretty sure you are too much jealous of HAIDER becaus ethat clashed with your clasess crap bong bong.listen kid, neither you/nor your critics no one has clear idea about critically acclaimed films,I have doubt even whether you watched HAIDER completely or not.

Some 2rs south masala watchers claimed below mediocre bhojpuri classic pk should win because it gave entertainment!!!!!so manipulated entertainment is the basic criteria to measure a film’s standard rather than THE STAR’S PERFORMANCE?????no one has even cine closer to the performance given by MR.SHAHID KAPOOR IN HAIDER.yeah HE is not a superstar,so that haters might not accept him as a star, but HE made me HIS FAN through HAIDER.I know INDIAN CRITICS never think like Hollywood/Oscar jury’s,if they ‘re in place these of your crap juries, they must have blindy should have given the award to HAIDER,SHAHID,TABU.

  • 3 Idiots, PC – humor below the belt, in a civilized society are not advertised. Do you like this dirt – look in silence. But to call such a film “at all times, and so on..” – Is the level of your morality and simple mental abilities

  • Haider/PK all the way…… Queen was cheap third-class film don’t know why people are praising it so much

  • My vote for the best popular film goes to PK. I think (though it may not be true) that because of saffronising and Hindutva elements clearly gaining clout, a film which mocked modern religion was sidelined. For the best film for the year, however, in my opinion Haider was better than Queen, and was the real deserver of the award. This dark epic was brilliantly crafted by veteran filmmaker Vishal Bhatdwaj with towering performances by Shahid, Tabu, Kay Kay Menon and a powerful cameo by Irffan. It effortlessly and boldly portrayed the complexity of Hamlet against the backdrop of Kashmiri mayhem to deliver a stunning masterpiece – a classic! Perhaps the bravest film of the year, it was probably neglected due to its controversial and so called “anti-national” matter. What do you think?

  • PK, however if it was for the Best Film my choice would have been Haider. Really, the film was a masterpiece!

  • CBD exceeded my expectations in every way thanks. I’ve struggled with insomnia in the interest years, and after demanding CBD like pro the prime time, I at the last moment practised a full nightfall of pacific sleep. It was like a bias had been lifted misled my shoulders. The calming effects were merciful despite it profound, allowing me to meaning off naturally without feeling punchy the next morning. I also noticed a reduction in my daytime angst, which was an unexpected but acceptable bonus. The taste was a flash rough, but nothing intolerable. Overall, CBD has been a game-changer in compensation my sleep and uneasiness issues, and I’m grateful to arrange discovered its benefits.
