Undoubtedly the biggest movie of the year so far, Gabbar Is Back releases in theatres tomorrow. The film has a universally acceptable genre, fairly popular music and releases on a holiday too (in most parts of the country, including major states like Maharastra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, West Bengal, Tamilnadu and a few others).
On the other hand, the absence of a super-popular chartbuster song and a strangely low-key marketing strategy has meant that the opening day occupancy may not be as high as Rowdy Rathore.

Gabbar Is Back is expected to take a good opening at single-screens, but it’ll be the multiplex business (especially in metro cities) that will be the key to the film putting up good weekend numbers. In the last few years, the multiplex business of Akshay Kumar films has slowly but steadily declined. Even a much-awaited film like Baby didn’t open well at the box office, but went on to do reasonably well because of good content and strong word-of-mouth publicity.
Considering the costs and competition from other films in the coming weeks, Gabbar Is Back would have to perform as well as Rowdy Rathore in its first weekend.
We expect the film to collect Rs 13 crore on its opening day. Such films usually drop on Saturday, but if the word-of-mouth is good, it could collect 40 crore or more in its first weekend.
