Many of our readers have been asking for this comparison, so here we go. A comparison between the last ‘non-festive’ release of the three Khans – Aamir’s Talaash (2012), Salman’s Jai Ho (2014) and Shah Rukh Khan’s FAN that has just released last weekend.
None of the three movies have fared well at the box office, highlighting the importance of Eid, Diwali and Christmas for the Khans.
Now that they’ve crossed 50, for the Khans to sustain their super-stardom and prolong their careers in the industry, two things will be very important – films with good content and the most crucial thing could be to get the big festive weekends. Because it’s only during these weekends when the big 250 – 300 grossers come.
Aamir currently has a stronghold over Christmas, Salman has made the Eid weekend his own and the two are currently dominating the industry with major 300 crore grossers.
Shah Rukh has slipped in India with Dilwale and FAN. But it’ll be a matter of one film that strikes gold at the box office. A universal success like Bajrangi Bhaijaan or PK is what he needs and it has to come quickly.
Interestingly, while Aamir and Salman’s career has been filled with ups and downs, the feeling of not dominating the industry is something that’s new for Shah Rukh. More so after FAN, because the gap between him and the Top 2 in India has widened.
So it’ll be interesting to see how he handles it. The big question will be, if he can climb the ladder to the top again. Especially at the domestic (India) box office, because overseas Shah Rukh is still the biggest crowd puller.

at present bollywood have two superstars
1-holidays
2-AKSHAY KUMAR.
Lol Monday collection is below 6cr as per BOI…Indicine your projection of 95cr looks far away now…
@Fasal Kerala
Opening of (self proclaimed) King Khan is only 38 cr…don’t use Red Chillies calculator here man… use only BOI figure as you always do for Hrithik…bwahahaha
Indicine Jai Ho Budget was 95 cr not 110cr Look at the screens jai Ho screens were 3800 but according to indicine its 4000! Where fans screen count is 3600 not 3500
@indicine love your website. But one thing even u guys have to admit ..Talaash released just a week before Akshay Kumars Khiladi 786 which had super hit songs and still did 90+ but here srk is struggling with 2 open weeks and Baaghi is coming next which is not like Khiladi 786 and this is 2016 so adjust inflation and Talaash did very well. Please do reply sir
@Nish, it’s a open week only when films can take advantage of it. If business crashes during weekdays, there is no point in having an additional week. Yes, Talaash came in a busy period – week before Khiladi 786 and 3 weeks before Dabangg 2.
Lol @indicine 110 cr budget of Jai Ho…
It was flop because it was sold for high price & its budget is not more than 80 cr… there was no special effect like fan have & it was sohail khan home production.
I dont think so even Kick has 110 cr budget.
Talaash was a success at the bo as it was declared semi hit by everyone while fan & jai ho r just avg/flop
Aamir Roxx
well Talaash and FAN are comparable as both are not fully massy enetertaining films….!
Jai Ho was a mass entertainer with a message. The film didn’t do that well as it wasn’t made well. Haven’t seen Fan yet but going by critic reviews, it certainly seems to be a good film.
Talaash too was a very very well made film, just that it wasn’t massy plus its suspense was leaked on social media plus it was sandwiched between big Diwali releases, an Akshay film and then ofcourse Dabang 2 on Xmas.
@Indicine: Why do you not give weightage to inflation?
You are doing wonderful job, impartially.
Salman Khan’s JAI HO is the most risky venture of the 3. It requires belief, guts in your ownself to be directed by your own super-talented brother with sparkling Daisy Shah as lead actress and with the Golden shining boys and girls of Indian cinema like Yash Tonk, Vatsal Seth, Sharad Kapoor, Ashmit Patel, Vikas Bhalla, Santosh Shukla, Mukul Dev, Sana Khan, Tulip Joshi …. Pray tell me who else thinks Fan is a risky film compared to this stellar cast of Jai ho ….
Jai Ho – Salman only you can pull this off
So its hence proved that akki is the only winner who release their movies on non festivals with different genre. We salute u sir……
indicine plz correct the budged of jai ho it is 65cr
dei @Fasal Kerala…why are you not replying about Red Chillies calculator for HNY..? Its not fair man..we need your intellectual input in this matter plz :P
@indicine first of all thanks for such prompt response. But sir Talaash as you mentioned released in just 2450 (aprrox screen) so it would have further got it screens reduced with Khiladi which will not be the case with FAN ..secondly the makers intention was 2 cash out with 2 open weeks its the audience that have rejected it…but incase of Talaash Khiladi 786 would have come even if Talaash had done 100+ crore opening weekeend so dont u think Aamir is in his own league? bcoz if he starts giving 2 movies a year nobody can stop him
Indicine, you will never consider High Ticket price of FAN and Partial Holiday for it when u compare it with other films
Dont know what to make of such comparisons.
Jai Ho was a more commercial movie with Salman being in his comfort zone and kind of role in which masses had loved and adored him in past. So it seemed to be the safer movie. Compared to Jai Ho, Fan and Talaash were niche movies with limited audience with Talaash being the more darker of the two. It also opened with the highest screen count. But Jai Ho was also at dis-advantage with negative reviews and lower ticket prices.
Fan was a niche movie and without songs but its ticket prices were probably the highest of the three. The action scenes in the trailer also gave it a boost and it did look more commercial compared to Talaash but lesser than Jai Ho. But primarily being a multiplex movie it faced tough competition there in Jungle Book (and before any one starts calling it another EXCUSE please note that I m just mentioning this factor here for a fair comparison with the other two movies). Cant recall if any one of the Jai Ho and Talaash faced any such competition; may be they did but I cant remember.
Talaash apparently seems to be at the most disadvantage with the least number of screens of the three and being a slow paced suspense movie and it did great business keeping in view its genre. But then it had 2 very good heroines which were missing in both Jai Ho and Fan.
So all had their advantages and disadvantages. But apparently Jai Ho had an edge over others keeping in view its more acceptable genre in which Salman had previously delivered blockbusters.
One conclusion is that a holiday release gives a major boost to the movies and that is the reason even Khans want it.
Other than that, comparisons like these do not normally result in any fruitful conclusion and is good only to keep the fan wars going.
Never knew jai ho budget was 110cr Lol :p
by d way very Good Article indicine team !
Jai Ho was a masala film and not off beat movie like fan and talaash.. And i beleive Fan is the most boring movie I have seen in theaters in last 5 years… Yes SRK is brilient in Fan no doubt…
baby vs fan ka comparision bhi dikhao..
haters kuch bhi kar lo…FAN is goin gto HIT….
Economics of Jai Ho:
Budget: Cost of Production: 55 crore + P&A: 15 crore = 70 Crores
Theatrical Rights (India + Overseas) or was sold to Distributors for 110 crore (But earlier it was said to be 90 Crores)
Satellite Rights: Approx 55 crore as per package deal of Salman Khan to Star Network.
Music, Home Video and Others: 7-8 crore.
Distributor Share: India 62-63 crore
(Lifetime Expected). Overseas 17-18 crore (Lifetime Expected). Total Worldwide 80 crore.
What’s Makers Earned: Makers have made around profit of (Theatrical Right + Satellite Rights + Other Rights – Budget) 103-104 crore approx.
What’s Distributors Earned: Actually Distributor combined all India has made a loss of around 31 crore
Verdict: Above Average
@Kaali
This film is not in a safe zone. Budget is 105 excluding srk’s fee. Which means this film shud do minimum 140-180 Cr business so that srk gets a decent money for his hard work but that seems impossible right now.
Fan maximum 110 Cr lifetime. Dishoom will easily overtake it.
Top 5 OPENING WEEKEND – Australia – 2016: 1.#LovePunjab [Punjabi] 2.#Theri[Tamil] 3.#Fan4.#Ambarsariya[Punjabi] 5.#Ardaas[Punjabi]
srk behind regional heroes.
Jai Ho was panned by Critics and the Critics showered blessings on FAN! Another fact!
Those SRK fans talk about overseas collection and think it’s big than domestic collection,, should leave India with then they can say we make it large,, SRK make it large ..???
Jai Ho, was a bad movie compared to Talash and Fan. It still managed good collections compared to Talash and Fan. But why does the makers put in so much money producing a risky movie?
Those who credit Khans success to festive releases.Bhai they get festive releases because they deliver on festive releases.Did they use to get festive releases right from start of career? They proved themselves and then they got the position in the industry.Everyone tried festive releases.Like Ajay with SOS,HR with K3 ,Akki with BLUE,Ranveer with BRM.If they feel that they can overtake KHANS then they are open to release their movie on festive dates.
I don’t know why you have never put ‘Ready’ into the comparison or in the list when you take Talaash released at the end of the year? Isn’t it a Salman Khan movie?
Too much biased!
Fan has seen a big drop in collections on Monday with collections in the 5.75 crore crore nett range. The drop is 70% from day one but day one was a holiday . If we take the fair value of day one the drop is around 60% which is still too high. source boi.
Non holiday non holiday..you are talking about non holiday..then compare with Ready u idiots..Blockbuster in non holiday period by Salman Khan..holiday or non holiday only Salman Khan Rules!!!
