FAN Sunday (Day 3) Box Office Collection Update

Shah Rukh Khan’s FAN has opened better on Sunday as compared to the morning shows on Saturday, but the average occupancy at centres that we tracked (multiplexes) was still about 5% lower than Friday. The point to be noted here is, SRK films generally take a big opening on Friday morning and FAN was no different.

However, the big rise in occupancy is still missing, which continues to be a worrying sign because it’s the late morning, noon and shows until about 8PM that perform the strongest at multiplexes on Sunday. As of 1:30PM on Sunday, business remains above average to good, but not excellent – which is what is expected out of a big critically-acclaimed film like FAN on Sunday.

Single-screen business has picked up too, but the occupancy continues to remain on the lower side due to lack of appeal. FAN probably had the widest release for a songless film in the history of the film industry, but even though the opening was decent due to Shah Rukh’s presence, business has come crashing down on Saturday and Sunday is running at lower levels than Friday.

The makers would have done well to include the ‘Jabra’ song in the first half of the film, both to quickly establish the character of Gaurav and also to increase the appeal of the film at smaller centres. There are reports that even the multiplex audience were disappointed that the ‘Jabra’ song wasn’t a part of the film.

Looking at the trends, FAN is now looking at weekend business of somewhere around 52 crore mark. Monday will be the biggest test, a good hold will be important if the film has to go on to be a decent grosser.
