Dilwale was steady on its 9th day at the box office, but the collections are now down to low levels. The Rohit Shetty directed film is a profitable venture for Shah Rukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment, but domestic distributors of the film are set to lose a big chunk of their investment.
There are several reasons why the film has been below-the-mark in India; One, the clash should have been averted, both films have lost money but Dilwale has ended up losing more. Two, protests and show cancellations affected the business of the film in quite a few centres in the all-important first weekend.
Three, since most people cannot afford to watch two films in theatres at multiplexes, they had a choice to make and they opted for Bhansali’s magnum opus over Shetty’s entertainer. And finally, the family audience that were expected to throng to theatres to watch Dilwale, haven’t come out in big numbers during the Christmas weekend.
The difference in lifetime collections of Bajirao Mastani and Dilwale is now down to around 8.5 crore. The Ranveer Singh starrer is likely to overtake the SRK film on Monday or Tuesday.

If only return of investment is everything not the distributors recovery then Salman’s Jai Ho was a Superhit not just a semi hit/average. Read the analysis carefully on Jai Ho……
Production cost- 35-40cr(without salman’s fee)
Marketing cost- 15cr
Total cost- 50-55cr.
Pre release recovery:
Satellite right- 55-60cr(salman’s 500cr deal for 5yrs with star tv).
Overseas dist share- 15cr.
Music right- 10cr.
Total pre release recovery- 80-85cr.
All india distributors share- 65cr+.
Hence rotal recovery from all sources- 85cr+65cr= 150cr.
Total profit: 150cr(income)-55cr(cost)= 95cr.
The makers of Jai Ho earned 95-100cr profit on Jai Ho. But it was declared semi hit/average due to the losses of domestic distributors.
Hence dilwale should be declared Flop with 150-160cr collections no matter how much the makers earn from it…
@sss are you for real. You are so unrealistic in your expectations as far as SRK is concerned. You keep harping on overseas collections.
Now let me remind his failure in this film will affect future films overseas. In the future overseas fans will begin to monitor domestic response before committing themselves. It’s a natural reaction to the response of Dilwale. You won’t get before SRK next release. Did you not see the domestic response to BB increased the popularity of Salman in the overseas markets so be warned

I do hope and pray that Ajay will not let his wife Kajol make another movie with the queen. He had almost sent her career down the toilet drain with Diwale. I am sure that he is disappointed in the outcome.

I don’t think because both movies reached at break even. Dilwale is defeated by bm. But both are in no profit no loss situation. No of screens r also big reason for difference. After watching BM I became fan of ranveer. Great award winning performance.
