Dilwale has collected Rs 21 crore on its opening day at the box office, which is about 10-15% below trade expectations for Friday. The film has performed well across all circuits in India, but the clash factor and division of screens has resulted in the film collecting lesser than it should have.
In comparison, Shah Rukh Khan’s last release Happy New Year collected Rs 44.97 crore on its opening day. Prem Ratan Dhan Payo collected Rs 40.35 crore. Both released on national holidays.
Pre-Eid releases – KICK collected Rs 26.52 crore on its opening day, while Bajrangi Bhaijaan collected Rs 27.25 crore. Both films released during the Pre-Eid period and non-holiday.
Aamir Khan’s PK which released in the same week last year collected Rs 26.63 crore. It got a solo release.
The common factor for all these films is that the screen count was around 30-40% more more, and the number of shows at multiplexes were about 35-40% more. However, the average ticket price of both Christmas releases this year, were increased by around 5-10%, at some places multiplexes even more than that.
There were also reports of some shows getting disrupted in certain parts of the country, due to Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘intolerance’ statement.
All factors considered, it’s a good opening day for Dilwale, but the weekend becomes extremely crucial. When there are two big films, the audience is spoilt for choice. Second day onwards, star power alone can’t bring the audience to theatres.
Both Dilwale and Bajirao Mastani will be dependent on word-of-mouth, the next couple of days will decide who passes the all-important box office test.

Alok Nath’s honest take about both these movies
A. On release date of both the films-
I feel Dilwale should have released on 18th and BM shd have taken any other date.I am not a SRK fan but for the sake of hindi film industry Dilwale had a better chance of utilizing the christmas holiday considering star cast, director and the genre. Even in best case BM wouldn’t have collected more than 20cr. on day and 65cr. over the weekend. On the other hand, Dilwale had serious chance of collecting 30cr+ and 100 cr over the weekend.
B. Movie Review:
BM is good but not great as Indicine said its no Baahubali. All movie goers do watch it once on big screen of multiplex for the grandeur, scale and acting.
Dilwale is a time pass movie made only to break opening records. Khichdi may provide something for everyone but not everything to any and at the end you will feel hungry.Watch it on a single screen with an intention to have a good time.
C. Box office prediction:
Dilwale will definitely collect much more than BM. I hope the gap is not too huge. If the gap is around 50 cr it would be a very good result for everyone associated with the movie.

Dilwale- SRK you are a very capable actor pls stop working with Farah, Shetty etc.I will be waiting for your FAN and Raees.
Sanjay leela Bhansali- No one in hindi film industry can capture grandeur and art like you do but it would be nice to spend more time on story and screenplay.
Both YRF in 2012 and Eros in 2015 respectively took advantage of Salman’s movies and his stardom to book screens for their [the production houses’] films starring much lesser and smaller stars.

Great collections with just around 3000 screens nd big clash. Srk has proved he is the biggest superstar. Wom is great nd today it will be around 25 crore. Audience is in love with dilwale it will be a blockbuster. I loved it last night. My rating 4.5/5. I m going to watch it tomorrow again. Love u srk.

Satisfactory, but not upto my expectations . I expected 22-26 cr on day one. Next 2 days are crucial for Dilwale.
I don’t know how much this intolerant issue is affecting Dilwale, but daily I see some message on WhatsApp appealing people to boycott Dilwale and watch BM.

@Indicine : Any idea about screen count. I believe , DIlwale screens are either lower or at par of BM. Because its not possible that both the movies will have 3000+ screens. You yourself know, that we have around 5500+ regular screen in India and not more than that. This entire mathematics looks so confusing.
If for an instance, we accept that Dilwale was released on 3100 screens (that’s the upper limit if BM released on 3050 screens) and let’s take the common occupancy as 65 %. Still it collected 21 cr.
On the same number of screens (almost) , with 30-35% of occupancy, BM collected around 13 cr. How is this possible?
Eros is giving wrong figures, either in terms of collections or screen count. But the bigger question is, why a producer will give incorrect number of screens? It will ultimately be a suicidal step for them in long run as people compare the collections based on number of screens.
@Indicine : If possible, please get the details from your sources, how many screens are allocated to Dilwale.
@Anand 5:13 pm : I will tell you how solo release and screen count matters. We all know about the mass following of Salman Khan and Eros has booked most of the screens using “BB” distribution and contract. They have got most of the single screens in regions where Salman has stron hold (i.e. core mass centres like UP and Bihar). So for a film like BM, if you allocate screens in a remote city of Bihar or Orrisa , they will be least bothered about BM . Instead they will prefer some regional language movies and BM shows will go empty. And this is what has happened.
Those areas, where DIlwale would have done pretty well, all the SS are allocated to BM as per the contract (because the high court verdict came on 17th evening and by then , most of the screens were allocated) .
So Dilwale is doing well at given screens, but if you say that more number of screens would have resulted into lesser occupancy , then I completely disagree with you. If the screens would have been allocated into correct area, occupancy would have been increased and so are the opening day and weekend collections.
