Dilwale has collected Rs 21 crore on its opening day at the box office, which is about 10-15% below trade expectations for Friday. The film has performed well across all circuits in India, but the clash factor and division of screens has resulted in the film collecting lesser than it should have.
In comparison, Shah Rukh Khan’s last release Happy New Year collected Rs 44.97 crore on its opening day. Prem Ratan Dhan Payo collected Rs 40.35 crore. Both released on national holidays.
Pre-Eid releases – KICK collected Rs 26.52 crore on its opening day, while Bajrangi Bhaijaan collected Rs 27.25 crore. Both films released during the Pre-Eid period and non-holiday.
Aamir Khan’s PK which released in the same week last year collected Rs 26.63 crore. It got a solo release.
The common factor for all these films is that the screen count was around 30-40% more more, and the number of shows at multiplexes were about 35-40% more. However, the average ticket price of both Christmas releases this year, were increased by around 5-10%, at some places multiplexes even more than that.
There were also reports of some shows getting disrupted in certain parts of the country, due to Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘intolerance’ statement.
All factors considered, it’s a good opening day for Dilwale, but the weekend becomes extremely crucial. When there are two big films, the audience is spoilt for choice. Second day onwards, star power alone can’t bring the audience to theatres.
Both Dilwale and Bajirao Mastani will be dependent on word-of-mouth, the next couple of days will decide who passes the all-important box office test.

@The phenom: Dilwale’s occupancy was’nt 70%,it was around 65%.And Eros have’nt manipulated the collections,they have manipulated the screen no. Their screen count is around 2300-2400.Even acc. to boi BM has done around 12.5crs.

Dhoom 3 collected 36 with less than 4000 screens and with mixed word of mouth.

As a commentator named ‘@Bade Bhai’ pointed out here,The numbers of screen counts hardly matters when it doesnt show more than 95% of Occupancy in the available screens. What will you do having all these extra screens even when there are not enough people to fill up the available theatres for a film? Only the available audiences will get shared in different screens.
It will only matter when the available theatres/screens get fully occupied (100%) and do not have seats/spaces to accomodate the audiences thronging in to the theatres.
So, first fill up or show 95% Occupancies in the available screens, then ask for more screens, dear fans of Dullwale or Saarokians!
And some may argue that the Clashes give the audiences options to choose the films they want to watch and a solo release doesnt give that option to the people.

Tell me why the audiences have to choose BM over Dilwale? Maybe because of Bad WOM. If so, admit that Dilwale is a badly made trashy film which is why it is having negative WOM.
Or admit that Sarook aka Ram Lal is a smaller than Ranveer is. That is why at least some people are choosing BM over Dwale.
In the same vein, during Bajrangi V Bahubali, people had options to watch Bahuali and not to watch Bajrangi. Still people watched Bajrangi and it crossed 300 crores. That is called Stardom + Content which Dwale has none.
As of Bhai’s films clashing with other films on the same day, it has not happened in recent few years because no body has dared. If it happens in the future, we will see how much other films eat out the business of Bhai’s films and how many people choose other films over Bhai’s films.
As of now, nobody dares to clash Salman bhai because they know people won’t give their films a chance to survive at the BO.
