Yash Raj Films’ Detective Byomkesh Bakshi releases in theatres tomorrow. The film has been promoted fairly well, but the promos and music have failed to create any buzz.
It’s a huge advantage for any film when it gets a holiday release (tomorrow is a national holiday for Good Friday), but Detective Byomkesh Bakshi releases with one of the most keenly-awaited Hollywood films of 2015 – Fast and Furious 7 - which has already got a wide release at theatres today.
Lead actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s films have opened well at the box office – Kai Po Che collected Rs 3.75 crore on Day 1 and Shuddh Desi Romance (SDR), from the same banner, did business of Rs 6.5 crore. However, the music of SDR was popular and the promos worked better too.

We expect Detective Byomkesh Bakshi to collect around Rs 4.5 crore on Day 1 and then rely on word-of-mouth publicity to do well at the box office. The first weekend business will be crucial and the extent of growth on Saturday and Sunday will decide the fate of the film.
The last YRF film to open well at the box office was Gunday early last year. Since then, all their films have taken slow starts. While Bewakoofiyaan, Kill Dil and Daawat-e-Ishq failed to show growth and eventually tanked, Mardaani and Dum Laga Ke Haisha did well because of positive word-of-mouth. Detective Byomkesh Bakshi too will have to be a good film to emerge as a success.
Below is a table with box office predictions of all films released in 2015. It’s part of the #IndicineFBO where we predict the opening day collections of a film based on pre-release buzz and trade expectations.
