Dangal or Sultan – Which film is going to be the highest grosser of 2016? This question was the hottest topic of debate within the trade for the last couple of weeks leading up to the release of Aamir Khan’s Dangal. There was no clear winner then, with most picking Sultan, but it’s a lot more clearer now.
Even though nothing can be said with certainty when it comes to box office collections, Dangal could surpass Sultan in just 2 short weeks.
The battle in the first week was actually won by Sultan by a fair margin, but it’s the trend or the way a big film sustains in Week 2 and 3 that decides if it can go on to break records.
At the end of 8 days, Sultan is ahead of Dangal, but the gap has reduced quite considerably:
- Day 1 – 6.76 crore (Sultan leads)
- Day 2 – 9.26 crore (Sultan leads)
- Day 3 – 1.48 (Dangal leads)
- Day 4 – 9.45 crore (Sultan leads)
- Day 5 – 24.57 crore (Sultan leads)
- Day 6 – 18.65 crore (Sultan leads)
- Day 7 – 11.28 crore (Sultan leads)
- Day 8 – 3.51 crore (Sultan leads)
Only on one day (3rd day), Dangal has held the lead but Sultan also had an extended weekend with two partial holidays and one big holiday for Sunday. On the other day, Dangal has had just one major holiday (Sunday) with the extra advantage of winter / Christmas vacations.
Day 9 onwards, it’s expected to be Dangal’s show all the way through. The lead that Sultan holds is slender and Dangal will lead by a huge margin by the end of this weekend.
It’s been Aamir and Salman’s show for the last 9 years and 2016 will be no different. The last time someone else topped the year was Shah Rukh Khan with Om Shanti Om in 2007.
Aamir is likely to take 2016, which will mean Salman’s career ‘highest grosser of the year’ number remains at 9, while Aamir will retain the 2nd spot topping a calendar year for the 7th time. Shah Rukh Khan is at the third position with 5 of his films emerging as the highest grosser of the year.

No problem if Dangal beats Sultan (highly likely) it’s a Better movie and deserves the praise and collection which it is getting. Upcoming yr will be dominated by Bhai for sure.

Mind one thing first before say anything bout beating aamir’s record. It took 4 years for shahrukh (Chennai Xpress) to beat 3 Idiot to become athg. But Aamir beat him/record(Dhoom 3) within 4 months. Someone saying 2018 Shahrukh going to break all records on Christmas release Anand Rai’s ” The Dwarf”. But unknowingly said I guess because before that on Diwali Aamir going to bring storms in the form of pirates movie : Yashraj Film “Thugs of Hindostan” and Sallu Bhai on Eid wil bring the massala franchise “Dabanggk”

@sky: No need of that big article. Every body accepts that AAmir movies are better than Salman’s . Similarly everybody knows Salman is bigger star than Aamir. Your own statement itself proving that.. Salman will have upper hand in week1 n AAmir will win from second week. And obviously first day n first weekend is the real test for stardom. Whereas lifetime is the real test for movie quality. Hope point is clear .

@ 3 khans if you talk about opening then dhoom3 smashed all opening records on non-holiday earning 32 crore net and no film has beaten the non holiday opening of dhoom3 till date . i am a supporter of salman but truth has to be told, not only that every film of aamir from ghajini has beaten some kind of initial record. dangal was released on non holiday with holiday falling on christmas, so the opening day record and weekend record was never on the cards but it smashed the single day record of prdp and has become the first film to earn 40 crore net on single day.
salman fans should not behave like srk fans. there is no harm in accepting defeat to a real deserving man. i strongly believe no salman fan has any right to speak about aamir’s boxoffice standing unless salman deliveres 2 or 3 atgs in a row or he takes the standard of initial to such an extent that no one can match him( i don’t think there is much difference between salman and aamir as far as initials are concerned, infact may be aamir is slighly ahead because of his huge following in metros). same way no srk fans also do not deserve to talk about salman’s boxoffice standing unless srk gives 3 or 4 blockbusters in a row or his films start having 3 crore plus footfalls like salman films and the same applies for akshay, hritik or any fan following.

Dangle is most motivational movie.Sultan is a good movie but Dangle is a very very good movie.I think that dangle become biggest movie of tha year.

Movie of the year ‘Dangal’ . I give it a 5 star rating, movie deserves a national award . Sultan is a good movie but the thing is that Dangal is the best realistic film of all. Even in this period of demonetisation, the movie became the highest grossing. It became the first film to enter 350 cr club.
