Dangal Trailer Review: Trade and Audience Response

The theatrical trailer of Aamir Khan’s Dangal was released 2 weeks ago and the response so far has been terrific. Before we get down to analysing the trailer, let’s take a moment to applaud the man who carries the burden of immense expectations.

“If a film has Aamir Khan, it has to be a good film” is something that we get to hear often. The ‘trust’ of the audience is difficult to earn, but living upto expectations and delivering quality films over and over again has been Aamir’s USP. He mixes it up well too, smart when it comes to film choices; One big-budget commercial film, followed by a ‘content-driven’ film that wins over both critics and the audience.

Positives of Dangal Trailer:

  • “Aamir Khan’s physical transformation”: The effort that has gone into playing the younger and older characters is immense. By gaining 30 kilos in 6 months and then losing all that weight a few months later, Aamir had put his life at risk. On-screen though, the results are outstanding. We see him carrying a oversized belly in one scene and a few moments later, he is in better shape than he was in Ghajini. Almost everyone we asked, took notice of the transformation and praised it. When an actor dedicates two years of his life for one role, the audience doesn’t mind paying the high ticket prices that his films command.
  • “As real as it can get”: What really stands out in the trailer is how real the film looks. Not many in the trade or audience pointed it out when we asked them, but the look and feel of Dangal is as real as it can get. People at smaller centres will also relate to the film a lot better than most films that are released today. Dangal is a pan-India film.
  • “Perfect casting”: While Aamir’s presence can overshadow everything else, the casting seems to be perfect. Whether it is the dialogue delivery, accent or expressions, every actor seems to have delivered. Aamir’s attention to detail is visible here too, he has worked closely with the director and dedicated nearly 6 months to getting the right actors for the characters.
  • “Indian feel”: Films that are shot in India, narrate real-life stories and have that rural feel to it are working in today’s times.
  • “Women Empowerment” is a much-discussed topic, Dangal is about two women wrestlers doing the unexpected and winning against all odds.

Negatives:

  • “A lot like Sultan”: One of the negatives that a lot of people pointed out is the similarity of Dangal with the other big release this year Salman Khan’s Sultan. Both were films based on wrestling. A few among the audience even went to the extent of saying it looks like a remake of Sultan!
  • “Doesn’t look entertaining”: The entertainment seeking audience might not be in a hurry to watch the film, so we expect the opening to be lower than some of the other event films.

The numbers:

We asked 28 people in the trade (including theatre owners, distributors, trade veterans etc) for their feedback on the trailer. The response was positive - 23 of them said the trailer was ‘good’, 5 said it was ‘average’, none said it was ‘poor’. None of these people were in any which way associated with UTV Disney, Aamir Khan, Nitesh Tiwari or anyone related to the film. Opinions were from known and unbiased sources.

The audience response falls in the ‘positive’ category too. In our poll on Twitter, 45% people voted for ‘outstanding’, 23% voted for ‘good’, 22% voted for ‘average’ and 10% voted for ‘poor’. We have tied up with three exhibitors to get genuine opinion on the trailer. At one theatre from the Mysore circuit, we got 62 responses, 48 people said they’ll watch the film, 5 said they’ll wait for feedback / reviews, 9 said they’ll skip it. At another theatre in Mumbai circuit we asked 96 people, 74 said they’ll watch the film, 10 said they’ll wait for the feedback / reviews and 12 said they’ll skip it. The response was about the same from the third theatre from Delhi.

Overall, the percentage of audience that said they would watch, only after watching the trailer, is very high.

Here’s what some of them said:

  • “Will never miss an Aamir Khan film, anything he releases will be watched”
  • “I trust Aamir more than the reviews I hear”
  • “Looks like Chak De India and Lagaan”
  • “Aamir walking into the arena to compete (shows towards the end of the trailer) is mind blowing”
  • “Bohot acchi lagi trailer (really liked the trailer)”
  • “Looks like Sultan”
  • “Not looking entertaining”

Our Rating: We got with 8 on 10 for the trailer of Dangal.

  • Ab dangal hoga…….
Har Woh Cheez jo In ka Dhayan pehalwani se Hataigi…woh mien hata doon…
    Real Story….
    Each Dailouge is Wonderful
Every one is tremendous in Dangal…
Mr perfectionist ky sath har cheez perfect lagti hai….
    Aamir Is Real King……

  • The trailer was very an average trailer , the fact is all bollywood include the media and the audiences concider him like god, and will Always praise whatever film he does even if its a crap like dhoom 3 pk and now dangal.
Anyway i am waiting for my megastar’s kaabil trailer response

  • Sultan was what Dangal is on a very superficial level. Dangal will emotionally connect a lot more than Sultan. Aamir’s as real as it gets performance will give the film a soul. I don’t care if it becomes the HGOTY or the HGOAT, it will be a memorable film for sure. Have said it a million times, will say it again – Aamir Khan is the ISI mark of Hindi cinema.

  • Saw dangal trailer last night. Cut Copy Pase from Sultan. Maximum 200 Cr due X-Mas + 4 Open Weeks otherwise 100 Cr is not possible.

  • The kind of work Indicine is doing is incredible to say the least. Everyday we get to read brilliant articles.
    Keep it up guys.
Coming back to Dangal, it will take a big opening cos of the man himself. If content is accepted then only sky is the limit.

  • As expected report are positive for an aamir starrer, really amazing how aamir work for his films to fulfill the audience expectation.

  • With such extraordinary response and the super stardom of aamir sir, expecting a 30+ opening day and 100 cr weekend.
You just can’t give a number for Aamir sir films as he is beyond all numbers.

You just can’t give a number for Aamir sir films as he is beyond all numbers.

  • This year every big star facing problems at box-office flop either srk ajay hrithik not including akshay becuse he is 130 cr star sometimes he is 80 cr star.only salman give atbb 300 cr
Now i am waiting for aamir what will happen to him this year is totally disaster and one thing i noticed@indicine that every year box office collection decreases now only salman and aamir give atbb blockbuster else no one

  • Aamir has said multiple times that the film is very funny and serious at the same time. Thus not too worried about the entertainment quotient…..plus remember apart from the trailer , aamir has not started marketing it yet…..December would be Dangal month, I can assure everyone!

No doubt it would be a very good film. If the daughter emotion clicks, DANGAL is a serious contender to be the first 350 crore film!!!

Yes Sultan releasing before Dangal does take away the novelty a bit. However, Sultan would have suffered a lot more had Dangal released before Sultan. Overall, Dangal is a very Indian film, about Indian society, it should have a PAN INDIA appeal.

No doubt it would be a very good film. If the daughter emotion clicks, DANGAL is a serious contender to be the first 350 crore film!!!

  • I am hoping that it will get enough support from single screen audience to achieve a big lifetime number because in multiplex Aamir sir in unmatched.

After looking Trailer response & Aamir sir huge stardome i am expecting 320 cr+ for Dangal.

  • Kaabil trailer loved more than dangal trailer… by peoples.. everyone going gaga over it.. waiting for ur review@indicine

  • The trailer was outstanding…there are no two thoughts about it..it will be interesting to see what marketing strategy does Aamir Khan adopt from now till the release of the film because he is also the producer this time around..I’ll still go with a near 30 crore opening day prediction..all the best

  • The only similarity between Chak de India and Dangal
    -Both based on women empowerement
    -Both are classics
-Both have class legendary “actors”(Aamir-the emperor and SRK)

  • That is the difference between a real superstar and a so called superstar. Dangal trailer though was very good but did not have any heroine, no songs, no entertaintment but still it is expected to open 25 crore plus or even 30 crore on a working day. But our so called superstar’s film fan without these things ( according to zebra fans) opened just 19 crores net that to on a partial holiday. Without the partial holiday on a normal day fan would have opened to 15 or 16 crore net.Now see the difference. It’s almost 10 crores or even more. It has to be said aamir khan is the biggest star in the multiplexes. In 2014 pk opened 25 crore plus without mass appeal and fan opened to 15 crore net ( real value) despite of having loads of action scenes in the trailer which attract masses, in fact fan has way more action scenes in the trailer than even commercial entertainers bajrangi bhaijaan or prdp. But despite of having less action scenes in the trailer bajrangai bhaijaan opened to 27 crore net while fan opened 15 crore nett which has action scenes and chase sequences in the trailer comparable in numbers to dhoom 3, ek tha tiger or kick . I have only one question. When srk does a film like fan it becomes a off beat film, but when aamir khan does a dangal which also has no heronie , no entertaintment, no mass appeal it becomes a potential 300 crore commercial entertainer. why? have anybody any answer?

  • Thank you for the article Indicine. And now I know why you were late in publishing this article.

What should I say…Dangal is already a blockbuster.Tweets of Javed Akhtar,KJo,Vinay shukla etc were genuine and the trailer and it’s review by Indicine are the proofs.People are excited and want to watch it on 23rd December.

Indicine is right. The film looks real and feels so Indian while watching the trailer.Main highlights are:-
    1. Aamir’s Haryanvi accent-Perfection redefined.
    2. Dialogues-Mind blowing to say the least.
    3. Aamir’s body transformation-Mother of all transformations.
    4. The title song-Goosebumps.

Watching the trailer on repeat mode and it still looks fresh.A classic on its way.
