Aamir Khan’s Dangal has become the highest grossing film of 2016, breaking the record of Salman Khan’s Sultan in just 13 days after its release. The film has managed to do so in record time without the extra national holiday that most Christmas releases have got in the last few years.
Credit should almost entirely go to Aamir Khan for seeing through a film that didn’t look entirely commercial, neither did it have a big acclaimed director nor a popular heroine. In fact, Dangal did not seem to have any of those commercial ingredients that make films a record-grosser, yet a huge section of the multiplex audience have found the film to be more entertaining than many of the commercial blockbusters that have released in the last few years.
Dangal has also proven that content is the absolute king at the box office and there is nothing that’s bigger than positive word-of-mouth. Stardom does take a backseat after the first weekend, but big names like Aamir and Salman ensure that a bigger section of the public are willing to spend their hard-earned money on their films.
In the last 10 years, when the entertainment options have increased along with ticket prices getting exorbitant, only two actors and five films have managed to bring more than 3 crore people to theatres for their films. The films are 3 Idiots, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, PK, Sultan and now Dangal. The names, we all know.
Dangal is almost certain to become the highest grosser of all time and it’ll be a record that 2017 films will find it extremely difficult to beat.

Akki had a good year too but collections are not even half of Sultan or Dangal. Forgetable year for SRK, Hrithik and AJ. Ranbir gave a Hit after long time but he is nowhere near his best (YJHD). Sushant cant claim entire credit of MSD success but his future looks good. Ranveer, Varun, Arjun, Sid, have lot to reach the level of top superstars forget coming near Salman and Aamir. DANGAL is CDI (2007). CDI was way ahead of its time. Had CDI released in 2017 EDX instead of 2007, It will cross 350 Cr like DANGAL. Same female subjects. Same India as underdog. Same secondary non-cricket sport (hockey instead of wrestling). “Kuch kariye bas bas bada bole” would’ve become national anthem easily with all the jokes referring to cash crunch in India today.
ANDAZ APNA APNA would’ve probably crossed 450 Cr easily had it released on 2017 Christmas Solo.
SWADES with its patriotic subject of NASA scientist from India’s remote village comes back home and literally ‘lights’ up a village with sustainable local water resources was another 350+ Crore if solo relese on Christmas.
