Aamir Khan’s Dangal has become the highest grossing film of 2016, breaking the record of Salman Khan’s Sultan in just 13 days after its release. The film has managed to do so in record time without the extra national holiday that most Christmas releases have got in the last few years.
Credit should almost entirely go to Aamir Khan for seeing through a film that didn’t look entirely commercial, neither did it have a big acclaimed director nor a popular heroine. In fact, Dangal did not seem to have any of those commercial ingredients that make films a record-grosser, yet a huge section of the multiplex audience have found the film to be more entertaining than many of the commercial blockbusters that have released in the last few years.
Dangal has also proven that content is the absolute king at the box office and there is nothing that’s bigger than positive word-of-mouth. Stardom does take a backseat after the first weekend, but big names like Aamir and Salman ensure that a bigger section of the public are willing to spend their hard-earned money on their films.
In the last 10 years, when the entertainment options have increased along with ticket prices getting exorbitant, only two actors and five films have managed to bring more than 3 crore people to theatres for their films. The films are 3 Idiots, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, PK, Sultan and now Dangal. The names, we all know.
Dangal is almost certain to become the highest grosser of all time and it’ll be a record that 2017 films will find it extremely difficult to beat.

Agree with Dragon. Audience is definitely appreciating and putting in money on the films wherein the Content is given precedence. Dangal is a very fine film and close to a cinematic achievement where the attention span of the audience is reduced heavily and overall attendance is competing with the Hollywood Movies. I am pretty sure everyone is now taking a cue and working on making sure the content is addressed in the movies.

dangal deserved to be hgoty. Aamir puts his heart & soul in film thats why it takes 2 years as he involves in film from scripting stage to till release over. many best wom films are there of big b,nawaz,irfan,manoj but they are not so big like 3idiots,bajrangi,dangal,pk,sultan etc. even if they have not released on festival they have earned 200-250cr but neerja,pink,aligarh have been released on festival it have max. 150-180cr. dangal was also not so commercial but earned on name of aamir. aamir should do one film per year for establishing crazy fan following like salman but he is right at his place to offer what is expected of him.

This has been a terrible year in terms of Box office except few films which have done amazing business . Dangal deserves to be the HGOTY as it is much better than Sultan . TJB is the biggest surprise as it 2nd highest Grosser on non holiday after YJHD and highest Grosser in the month of April . Sushant has taken a huge leap with MSD as it occupies the 4th spot . All the movies find their place in Top 10 which is superb . Ranbir also finds the 8th place after 4 back to back failures . Shivaay underperformed and should have been a success . Fan was a huge disappointment in terms of content as well as Box office . Quite disappointed to see MD on the 19th spot but I damn sure Hrithik will make a massive turnaround with Kaabil . On paper 2017 is looking bigger and better than 2016 . This year Baahubali : The Conclusion, 2.0 and FF 8 will be huge Contenders for the top 10 positions . After 2002 this is only the 2nd time in his career that Hrithik will not find a place in Top 10 . I hope something like this never happens with him in the future .
