Box office comparison between Shahrukh Khan’s biggest grosser ‘Chennai Express’ and his latest Diwali release ‘Happy New Year’ is interesting because pre-release, the trade pundits expected the latter to surpass the Rohit Shetty directed film.
In 7 days, Happy New Year leads by around Rs 86 lakhs, even though Chennai Express had plenty of holidays in its first week.
It’ll be interesting to compare the day-wise figures in the coming days, because Chennai Express was affected by the release of Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai Dobaara, while Happy New Year has no competition from big films this weekend. It remains the first choice for cine-goers, which should help the Farah Khan film perform well over the coming weekend.
Do note that the collections of Happy New Year includes business from Tamil and Telugu versions which has contributed around 5.5 crore in its first week. Chennai Express didn’t release in regional versions.

CE was a better entertainer and has better trend throughout its run. Meanwhile, hny is a typical trashy Farah khan film. Her only good film was MHN.

If we consider BOI as basis, the manipulation in HNY is greater than CE.

It looks like it will finish under his 2013 Eid release Channai Express despite of a more preferable release time, more screen size and higher ticket prices, as Chennai Express showed better trending post 1st weekend. To be fair it was inevitable after that kind of trailer, I knew it would open huge but struggle to put up big numbers afterward. A Superhit tag is still good, but it would be still considered as under-performance as expectations were sky high from it.
SRK shouldn’t get into numbers game (for Indian Cinema’s sake, stop producing Farah and family films), people don’t remember collections in longer run, they remember the content of the film and his last few releases have failed to meet expectations of those who are used to see SRK in great films like CDI etc, most of the people may not know how much it collected or how many records it broke, but we still remember it as a great film. Even one masala film “Chennai Express” was good for a change, but back to back masala films are sign of being obsessed of numbers game, as masala films are most likely to create new opening records. I can bet Fan and Raees will show better trending.
I find it really amusing that salman fans are criticizing the collections of HNY. Their star couldn’t even touch the 200 cr mark with dabangg, bodyguard, ready, dabanng 2, ETT, and Jai Ho. All of these releases were masala movies released during a holiday period without any competition. SRK has done 2 out-an-out masala movies and has touched 200 cr both times (HNY will definitely cross 200 cr).
Kick did well bc for salman khan standards, it was a good movie. people have much higher expectations from stars like SRK and Aamir and thus leads to unnecessary negativity when they fail to meet those sky high expectations. HNY is definitely a winner b/c it never meant to be path breaking cinema.
its my wish when u compare only hindi release mention hny only hindi collection also cuz remakes also not benifited in regional areas. dnt you think hindi version and regional versions are different can u release telugu version in Indore and earn money for that.
