There were five biggies that were expected to bring in ton loads of entertainment and also emerge as no less than blockbusters in last quarter of the year – ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’, ‘Son of Sardaar’, ‘Talaash’, ‘Khiladi 786’ and ‘Dabangg 2’. While JTHJ and SOS have stopped at being ‘Hits’, verdict on ‘Talaash’ is still awaited (there is a good chance that it would be a Hit eventually). However the much cherished word, ‘Superhit’, if not a ‘Blockbuster’ is still awaited. Most importantly, wait also continues for a film that is liked by most (universal hit). Well, at least amongst the target audience.
One is inclined to keep fingers crossed and expect that ‘Khiladi 786’ and ‘Dabangg 2’ turn out to be two such films.
For starters, both films are as unpretentious as they get when it comes to it’s target audience. Do we really know the storyline of any of the two films? Well, did I just use the word ‘story’? Hey, even the makers haven’t tried to throw this word at us as yet! And no, it is not because they feel that talking about the story may end up ‘revealing’ what the film is all about. However the fact remains that the Akshay Kumar starrer is being spoken about for its music and action. As for the Salman Khan starrer, it is in news for ‘attitude of Chulbul Pandey’.
The stories that would eventually play on screen could well be incidental!
However, what both films are promising is wholesome entertainment. Some may choose to scoff at ‘oh, so is this what I end up getting in the name of entertainment?’ Well, debate as some may, the fact remains that those who visit theatres in nook and corner of the country can’t be expected to sit down and critically acclaim the pointers around good v/s bad cinema. They are equally happy to munch their popcorn while watching ‘Ek Tha Tiger’, ‘Rowdy Rathore’ & ‘Agneepath’ or eating ‘samosas’ during ‘Barfi!’, ‘OMG Oh My God’ and ‘Kahaani’.
Simply put, for all the criticism that ‘Khiladi 786’ and ‘Dabangg 2’ may end up getting on their release, if they are entertaining enough for a larger segment of audience to give them a thumbs-up, they would work at the box office and (perhaps) turn out to be the quintessential superhits/blockbusters that industry has been longing for. If they are not, they would be out. Simple!
As for the critical nuances, they can wait!

The last few week’s have proved that Salman Khan is a star just competing with himself as releases of the other big stars have disappointed in terms of box office collections. Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Talaash can be claimed to be big money makers but that is only because the main component (male star) of the budget has a share in profits and when the share is given the profits are not so great. The fact is that the domestic theatrical box office is not what it should have been.
The 100 crore nett mark which is redundant as a benchmark today has proved a stiff task for Shahrukh Khan, Ajay Devgn and Aamir Khan over the last few weeks while for Salman Khan starrers the question is not will it do 100 but in how many days.
Shahrukh Khan just about squeezed a 100 crore with Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Ajay Devgn fell short with Son Of Sardaar, Aamir Khan looks to be going the same way as Ajay Devgn. It can be said the the genres of the Shahrukh Khan and Aamir Khan starrers are not very viable for big numbers but the fact these stars come after some time making their films become event films and that counteracts the genre factor to some degree. Also they had 2500 screen releases so with such wide releases, the makers themselves signal that they are expecting huge numbers. The not so great release of Son Of Sardaar can be an excuse if one has to be given for that film not achieving optimum figures.
This week will see another big star Akshay Kumar have a release with Khiladi 786. Akshay has seen the two universally best word of mouth films of the year with Rowdy Rathore and Housefull 2 and looking at the advance, Khiladi 786 will have to be appreciated as much or more than Rowdy Rathore and Housefull 2 to put up a big number.
If Khildai 786 does not put up a big number then the possible scenario for the last five months of 2012 would be that the two Salman Khan starrers (Ek Tha Tiger, Dabangg 2) have done in a few days what the Shahrukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Ajay Devgn and Akshay Kumar starrers have done in their lifetime run.

We expect films to entertain us and thats all, doesn’t matter wat genre it it is into. Only 2-3% of audience like to watch serious movies. If comedy and action is well mixed, then it works big time with max num of audience. SALMAN KHAN has mastered in knowing what his audience/fans want, so he is coming up with Block

EK THA TIGER was super entertainer, 3idiots was also the same(this was not a supernatural or serious film), so they worked bigtime at BO.
If Khiladi and Dabangg is good at their content part, its really gonna be good money spinners.
And for people who call Salman and Akshay’s movie a Crap are real crap minds, who doesnt understand the entertainment.
