Wazir: The first big release of 2016 didn’t open well at the box office, but remained steady for 2 weeks. The film found appreciation in 5-10 cities, which eventually helped it become an average grosser. Average.
Airlift: Akshay Kumar’s first release of 2016 wasn’t ‘hot’ in the trade prior to release and domestic theatrical rights did not fetch a big price either, but Airlift was one of those films that got its economics right, which helped the film become the first ‘Super Hit’ of the year. Pre-release expectations as 70-75 crore range, but Airlift should finish with lifetime business of 125 crore and become the highest January grosser of all time. It’s also Akshay’s second highest career grosser. The contribution of Airlift for the month of January was more than 50%. Super Hit.
Kya Kool Hain Hum 3: A section of the trade expected Kya Kool Hain Hum to outgross Airlift, but the end result was outright rejection from the audience. KKHH3 was the biggest disappointment of January. Flop.
Mastizaade: The Sunny Leone starrer opened to a reasonably good response and sustained fairly well too. The official figures suggest the film has just about recovered costs. Average.
Saala Khadoos: Rajkumar Hirani’s name was expected to help generate interest around Saala Khadoos, but the audience did not turn up at theatres to watch the R. Madhavan starrer. It didn’t get the kind of critical acclaim that such films need to grow on word-of-mouth, which sealed its fate by the end of its first weekend. Flop.
Fitoor: Opened to disastrous response and tanked without a trace. Katrina Kaif’s career hit an all-time low with Fitoor.
Neerja: Opened slow, but gained momentum over the weekend. Was fantastic in Week 1 and eventually went on to become the 2nd highest grosser of 2016 after Airlift. Yet another film that was based on a true event.
Jai Gangaajal: Priyanka Chopra didn’t promote the film as much as she should have. The film didn’t open well, the word-of-mouth wasn’t good either. Flop.
Kapoor & Sons: The Sidharth Malhotra, Alia Bhatt and Fawad Khan starrer open fairly well at the box office and showed good growth over the weekend – even though the Saturday collections of the film was affected by the India vs Pakistan World Cup match. During the weekdays, the film came into its own, recording fantastic collections for nearly 2 weeks.
The Jungle Book: The biggest surprise of the year came in the form of ‘The Jungle Book’. In the next few days, the film will go on to be biggest grosser of 2016 ahead of Akshay Kumar’s Airlift. It has also severely affected the business of Shah Rukh Khan’s FAN.
FAN: The biggest release of the year featured Shah Rukh Khan in the lead. It was expected to open well, it did. It was expected to grow further on word-of-mouth, but that didn’t happen as the business of the film began to falter on Day 2 itself. The crash on Monday has sealed its fate. First Shah Rukh Khan flop after 2005’s Paheli, that in itself is the most shocking trade news of 2016.
Jai Gangajal has not eared that much money it should get it was very good movie showing the women power and very good acting done by the versatile actress Priyanka Chopra, proud of you . It should have earned nearly 70 to 75 crore.

??????? Govinda, Sanjay dutt, Sanni deol ,Anil kapoor In chaaro staaro ki to kul film collection is web site pe khi nhi mil rhi
East or West Akshay is best.
Pink is superhit. You have given kapoors and sons superhit status. I think pink is more profitable for makers. Please change the verdict of pink.
Why is Dhoni just a Hit and not a Superhit or upwards. It is headed to beat Airlift and Rustom in gross collections by 3rd weekend.
Why Pink’s box office status is not updated? It has grossed more than 65 crores and declared “super hit”
Bhai shivaay ki collection b add kr do last 2 days ki…
Bhai shivaay ki collection b add kr do…
Ae dil hai mushkil is superb movie i lovet Ranbir acting Ranbir is Superstar
So the final Top 5 for 2016 seems to be:
Sultan
Dangal
M.S. Dhoni
Rustom
Airlift
& a very honorable mention to ‘The Jungle Book’ (English), Neerja & Pink.
My personal disappointment: Mohenjo Daro (expected 180 odd cr)
East or West #Bhaijaan is the best (Salman Khan).
