2012 has the unique distinction of being a year when each of the films released on major festivals/holidays/occasions has resulted in a 100 crore winner. ‘Agneepath’ [Republic Day], ‘Housefull 2’ [IPL kick-start] and ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ [Eid] have been a testimony to that fact and YRF-SRK starrer/’Son of Sardaar’ [Diwali] and ‘Dabangg 2’ [Christmas] are all set to take the trend further.

No wonder, similar dates for Bollywood movies in 2013 are being keenly looked at and the calendar is filling up fast with majority of stars staking their claim on the closest Friday. Let’s have a look:

  • Lohri – Imran Khan’s ‘Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola’ (Release Date: 11th January) – This is one film which is being shot rather quietly with no major hype or hoopla surrounding it. The ‘Lohri’ release for the film is just apt as this Imran Khan-Anushka Shgarma starrer is set up North where the festival is celebrated in full fervour. One waits to see whether the film sticks to this release date. Update: The film did release and didn’t do too well at the box office. First big disappointment of 2013.
  • Republic Day – Saif Ali Khan-Anil Kapoor-John Abraham’s ‘Race 2’ (Release Date: 25th January) – Abbas-Mustan didn’t really gain much from three open weeks that they enjoyed early this year for ‘Players’. However with ‘Race 2’ they are expected to strike back with vengeance. ‘Race’ stays on to be their highest grosser till date and with the film’s sequel being much awaited; they should make the best out of Republic Day weekend. Update: Race 2 did well at the box office, collecting Rs 93 crores. First major success of 2012.
  • Eid/Independence Day – UPDATE: The scenario has changed quite dramatically. After 3 super-successful EID releases, Salman Khan is unlikely to have a release this year. But it’s his arch rival Shahrukh Khan who will arrive during the festive weekend. His film will clash with Akshay Kumar’s Once Upon A  Time In Mumbai Again! Should be bigger than JTHJ vs SOS, surely!
  • Diwali – Hrithik Roshan’s ‘Krrish 3’ (Release Date: 3rd November) – Get ready for some fireworks this Diwali as Hrithik Roshan starrer ‘Krrish 3’ is set to make it to the big screen. Though it is pretty much expected that the 202 crore barrier set by Aamir Khan would be broken by then, it won’t really be wrong to say that 250 crore would be the target set by Roshans. Diwali 2013 should be the ‘baap’ of all holidays for Bollywood!
  • Christmas – Aamir Khan’s Dhoom 3 (Release Date: 25th December) – PK was initially expected to release during Christmas, but it’s the other Aamir Khan biggie – Dhoom 3 – that will arrive during the last weekend of the year. It is on this date that Aamir set the 100 and 200 crore milestones. Could 300 crore be surpassed this year? Time will tell!

  • Salman Khan will play the lead role in Rohit Shetty’s next directorial venture under Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions. Official detail announcement will be made soon. The new project is just known as Production No 1 for now.

I have seen you on Indicine asking some guys how can they comment bad without knowing anything about a movie similarly i am asking you how can u be sure about movie script without any info. Roshans r known to keep a low profile n come up with good product but calling it as gripping was too much. Last but not least, Yes, I am a Salman fan and proud to be one and we dont dream moon & stars without even knowing movie script. Velocity munh ke bal girtaa hoon !!!

  • i guess some of the guys here needs some mental checkup.

    first of all no actors decide the dates, until unless they themselves are producing the movies.

    also everyone wants to avoid a clash with another star, as it will affect both their business, as if the film does well, the whole production team gets benefit of that, and hence no actor would involve in petty fighting.

    since you guys are still in your nappies, your thoughts are just like kids, open your eyes and see the big picture.

    it is like some kids talking of who will win if super-man and spider-man fights? It is ridiculous.

    Grow up guys, a movie involves lot of people and not just stars.

    there are exceptional cases of festival releases, but then you need to be brave to take risk, as Ajay took against SRK release, and was rock steady against its competition (SOS budget 30 cr, recovered 138 cr worldwide, JTHJ budget 60 cr and recovered 211 cr worldwide), so comparatively Ajay’s movie got more profit.

    Meanwhile, since there was no confirmation earlier on Salman’s next for Eid, Ekta Kapoor latched on to the opportunity to lock the date for Once Upon…..that is called opportunist thinking, more of business minded.

    However, if Mental is ready for release i bet Ekta, being a business women, would surely change the dates, and Akshay wouldn’t want to fight with his friend Salman.

    Chennai Express is looking at dates that doesn’t clash as last year Diwali memories are still fresh on srk’s mind, and he would surely talk to Rohit Shetty of the same, to avoid clash. Hence, i don’t think it will release on Eid if Mental or Once Upon is releasing, may be a week earlier or later.
