There was a time when the ‘Monday test’ used to decide the fate of films at the box office. But with the ever increasing reach of social media and internet in general, the verdict is out much sooner. The percentage of growth on Saturday is now an indicator of whether or not a film is being liked by the multiplex audience.
While the ‘Saturday growth’ is less for films starring a major star in the lead, smaller films like Neerja are showing phenomenal growth on Day 2 – almost entirely on the strength of positive word-of-mouth.
The reason for the Saturday jump is because Sunday is a holiday, so the occupancy at multiplexes (especially in metro cities) rises on Saturday evening and peaks in the night.
Some points to be noted:
- The Jungle Book released on a partial holiday (Ugadi), otherwise the film would have show even bigger growth on Saturday.
- The Saturday business of Kapoor & Sons was affected by the India vs Pakistan cricket match, else business would have escalated by 30-40%.
- Rocky Handsome released on a holiday for Good Friday. The drop wouldn’t have been as high as 32% on Saturday.
- So far, Neerja and The Jungle Book have shown the best weekend trends at the box office.
- Akshay Kumar’s presence helped Airlift on Day 1 at the box office. Since the opening was good, growth on Saturday was limited.

The most surprising thing is that the Jungle book is performing brilliant in mass centres of UP,Bihar and Rajasthan what with the Hindi dubbed version recording great occupancy while business of Airlift was restricted to big city multiplexes and it underperformed at mass centres.
Good to see content based and good quality films toping the list other than Fitoor which had opened so low that it had to show a jump.
