The idea of remakes allows for the story to be adapted into a new setting, to be marketed to a new audience, after being customised for their needs. Why risk an original script that may not work when you’ve got a blockbuster script at your disposal that has a higher chance of striking a chord with the audience?
The influence of South Indian cinema on Bollywood and vice-versa was always there, but the trend of South Indian remakes in Bollywood has quickly reached exponential proportions with the huge success of Ghajini in 2008. Yaar let me tell you that the first ever indian movie to be remaked was ‘raja harischandra’ in 1917, remake of an original movie with the same name, made by non other than the “FATHER OF INDIAN CINEMA, SRI DADA SAHEB PHALKE JI”. What i want to say is that remakes have existed even before our grandfathers and fathers were born. Now coming to quality cinema, even the term “quality” here follows the einstein’s theory of relativity, e=m*c*c, in bollywood terms “e=ENTERTAINMENT, m=MOVIE (all the film making aspects) or MOVIE MARKETING or MASS&CLASS AUDIENCES or simply MONEY, c=CINEMA and c=COMMERCIALIZATION of CINEMA INDUSTRY. in other words movies are meant FOR enjoyment TO be enjoyed BY the people who want to enjoy. Yes quality should be there, but a cave man has nothing to do with the quality of a rocket or a space shuttle i.e masses need entertainment irrespective of the movie’s quality and they dont care whether a movie is a south remake or west remake or blah blah….as long as it entertains them. lets be pragmatic and realistic: bollywood is a film ‘industry’, money really matters.
