Action movies are all the rage lately in Bollywood and almost every top star has featured in one massy-action film.
But who is the best action hero in Bollywood today? Here are the nominees.
- Akshay Kumar – The Khiladi! Need we say more? From being written off by the critics at the beginning of the year, Akshay has once again emerged as a box-office force to be reckoned with. Housefull 2 and Rowdy Rathore are two of the biggest grossers of 2012.
- Salman Khan – Unarguably enjoying the best phase of his career, Salman has only done action-masala films in the last couple of years. This year too, he has two similar films lined up for release – Ek Tha Tiger and Dabangg 2. Is he the best action hero in Bollywood today?
- Shahrukh Khan – He’s the king of romance, but SRK has also excelled as an action hero. In the last decade, the superstar has featured in action films like Don, Ra One and to a certain extent Main Hoon Na.
- Hrithik Roshan – Almost every time Hrithik has done action, his films have been hugely successful at the box-office. Dhoom 2, Krrish and this year’s Agneepath.
- Aamir Khan – It’s Aamir who started the trend of South Indian action remakes with Ghajini. Next year, he returns as an action hero with Dhoom 3.
- Ajay Devgan – He started his career with action, then did some serious films and returned last year to cash-in on the trend. Singham was one of the biggest hits of his career.
- John Abraham – The turning point in John’s career was the first film in the Dhoom series way back in 2004. Since then, the actor has appeared in just one action film Force.
Other actors who deserve a mention, but haven’t delivered a solo action hit in a long time – Amitabh Bachchan, Sunny Deol, Sanjay Dutt, Dharmendra, Jackie Shroff and many more. Each actor a legend, but including these names would be unfair, as they probably won’t get enough votes.

Salman, Katrina bond at Ek Tha Tiger sets
Rain never fails to evoke images of romance, but in this case, a drenched little birdie told us that it’s more friendship than anything else. Even as the rainclouds gradually gather over Mumbai’s skies, Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif are stuck indoors in the rain in Thailand. A few days
ago, the lead pair of Ek Tha Tiger flew to Bangkok for the final shooting schedule of the film. Of course, no one could have predicted the heavy rains that have wreaked havoc in many parts of Thailand. And with the rain repeatedly delaying the shoot, the lead pair had plenty of time to catch up indoors.
“What else can you do in the rain? Salman and Katrina also kept waiting for things to work out (to start shooting). Meanwhile, they would talk and bond over different things like the weather, her workout regime, films and their scenes in the film,” says a source from the unit.
Though the film’s crew managed to ensure that the rain did not completely throw the schedule off, a lot of outdoor scenes with Salman and Katrina were delayed. And since a few of the scenes involved some heavy-duty action, no one wanted to take any risks.
“We were afraid of a lot more delay. But fortunately, things didn’t really go out of hand,” says our source. That’s why the unit seems to have finished the Bangkok schedule almost on time.
Salman’s friends tell us that the actor, who apparently will attend the IIFA awards ceremony in Singapore this weekend, also changed the status on his BlackBerry Messenger to hint that the rains have made things a bit difficult. While director Kabir Khan’s number remained unavailable, Rafiq Gangjee, vice president, marketing and communications, of Yash Raj Films, maintained that “the shooting of Ek Tha Tiger was completed as per schedule yesterday in Bangkok.”
While we’re happy that the film is almost completely wrapped up now, what gladdens our heart is this camaraderie between Salman and Katrina. The friendship between the actors, one believes, had soured after the alleged break-up following their alleged relationship.
SRK & Akshay to follow Tiger Salman
Bollywood actors like Salman and Akshay are happy reaping good amount of ‘moolah’ from the South blockbusters, and now SRK is all set to join the bandwagon. Where Salman’s ‘Wanted’ struck the right chord with the audience, Akshay Kumar’s ‘Rowdy Rathore’ is all set to make to the 100 crore club. Interestingly, both the films are remake of southern blockbusters and now King Khan is eager to cash on this formula.
Latest buzz has it that Shah Rukh will star in the remake of the 2002 Tamil blockbuster ‘Ramanaa’. And, apparently A Murugadoss of Ghajini fame will get to direct the film.
And after tasting success with ‘Rowdy Rathore’, Sanjay Leela Bhansali will yet again produce the SRK starrer. Moreover, speculations are rife that Aishwarya Rai Bachchan will make a comeback with this film.
It would be interesting to see if Shah Rukh can do a Salman or not.

Asin took Bollywood by storm as Aamir Khan’s love interest in Ghajini in 2008. Over the years, she’s delivered mainly hits where in three out of her four films went on to be the top 10 Bollywood blockbusters of all time. She is right now considered a lucky mascot by film makers. She has recently signed Khiladi 786 opposite Akshay Kumar and all eyes are now set on ‘Bol Bachchan’ which promises to be yet another hit in Asin’s kitty.
You are the new 100 cr heroine with Housefull 2 crossing the 100 cr mark. How does that feel?
It feels wonderful, but also somewhat incredible. It’s just been three and half years only for me in the Hindi film industry and to have three out of my four films in the top-10 films of all time is kind of unnerving! I think it is a largely a function of luck, growth in the film business and perhaps to a little extent on my choice of scripts — universal entertainers with a strong emotional or humor quotient.
How does it feel to have made it to the top in the North and South industries at the same time?
(Phew!) At some level I feel validated that work, dedication and belief in myself has worked for me. It is extremely rare that an actor in India finds an audience in the north and the south, and I feel very lucky to be Pan-Indian in that regard. There are slightly different audience sensibilities in the north and the south but I have been fortunate to have been accepted in both places.
Filmmakers consider you a lucky mascot with 3 blockbusters under you already. How do you take the tag?
Well it is a good tag to have for sure! Hopefully over time I can maintain the consistency of my work and better it and the perception changes to — it is her performance as much as lucky charm that makes it a hit!
You seem to be doing only comedies of late? Is that where your heart is?
It’s just a coincidence that my last two movies were also comedies. I personally would love to work in all genres. And like every girl I love rom-coms!
You are not from the film industry. How difficult it is it to sustain in this stiff competition especially from the other leading ladies?
By not thinking about it! As long as I am getting good work and the audience appreciates me, which so far has happened for me, I really don’t think there is any competition! I didn’t join the film industry to prove that I am better than this girl or more successful than that girl. And neither do I think that way even today.
How do you handle negativity in the media?
Well – with a laugh or at least a smile because I’m a very positive person. Also one must realize that anyone who becomes popular, gets his or her share of flak. Even the biggest superstars have their critics. So I guess there is no reason why I should not get my share. Internally, I know who I am, so am able to tell what is valid criticism and what is irrelevant. Frankly, I have had a lot of good fortune in life. I better learn to live with a bit of criticism. You have Bol Bachchan coming up. The trailer has generated a good response. Can you tell me a little about your role in the movie?
I play a character named Sania Bachchan in the movie. She’s very earthy. It’s a different look Rohit has given me in this film. I don’t think I can say anything more or Rohit will beat me up!
How was it working with Abhishek Bachchan & Ajay Devgn? Did they play pranks on you on the sets?
It was like working with a boy gang! Rohit, Ajay and AB have known each other since their childhood. So I was the new entry into that fold! Ajay and AB are like brothers. They were great fun on sets.

Meet Akshay Kumars body Double
He served as Akshay Kumar’s body double in Housefull 2. And that’s not all, even Katrina has a body double in the film, a girl called Rochelle Okoye, who has been a part of films like Twilight and Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters.
After the promo of Salman Khan’s next film Ek Tha Tiger opposite Katrina Kaif released at the theatres, it made a lot of people sit back and notice.
In fact, soon after, director Kabir Khan tweeted, “You Tube view meter jammed within 3 mins of launch, YRF server in danger of crashing, trending 15 mins after launch…That’s Tiger for you :-)”
Now buzz is that in the sequence, where Salman is shown doing what he does best — a series of stunt acts, in fact it is someone else in his shoes. With the help of special effects being done at a Mumbai-based studio, Salman’s body double’s face will be replaced with that of the star.
Our sources reveal that Salman’s body double is none other than Jawed El Berni, a French national, who in the past too has performed the star’s stunts. Jawed has been practicing martial art for the last 20 years and parkour for three.
According to sources the post-production work has started and VFX artistes are currently working on the painstaking process of replacing the body double’s face with Salman’s.
There are also rumours suggesting that since Salman’s back then was still recuperating from Trigeminal Neuralgia (a nerve disorder), he was unable to perform too many stunts on his own and a body double had to be called in.
