We will answer 10 questions from readers.
Q. Ready (2011) with 1.84 cr footfalls is a Blockbuster , while Devdas (2002) with 2.06 cr footfalls is a Superhit? Why is that so? – The Phenom
A. Verdicts are not based on footfalls, but the return on investment. Back in 2002 when Devdas released, it was the costliest film ever produced at a budget of around 45-50 crore. The film just about recovered its investment. On the other hand, Ready which released almost 10 years later, had costs of around 60 crore and did more than 2 times the business. No comparison really, Ready was a much bigger blockbuster.
Q. Do you think Akshay should come with a high budget action thriller movie with top notch production values to get his multiplex audience at big cities back? Even though it is risky as these sort of movies have always been panned by critics in the past but still like Ajay is coming with Shivaay,he can try it at least. His medium budget films like Singh is bliing,Gabbar they don’t look movies worth watching in cinemas unlike Khans or Roshan movies - Kshitij
A. Akshay Kumar is one of the biggest success stories in the industry. He has nothing left to achieve or prove, and after more than 23 years in the industry, he knows what’s best for him. From a business point of view, he could cut down on the number of films that he does, which would give the audience time to wait for his next film and also producers to invest more on his films. The problem in today’s times, due to high ticket prices at multiplexes, is that the audience is unwilling to come out in big numbers if a film doesn’t have high production values. Almost all Akshay films this year, with the only exception being Brothers, have been lacking when it comes to scale. Brothers was a sure-shot success if not for the poor content. The entire package – content, scale, music, big stars.. is what brings the audience to theatres in its first weekend.
Q. Can Dilwale beat Bajrangi Bhaijaan in india and Overseas – Raj
A. It’s one of the most asked questions here, but such questions are impossible to answer. Bajrangi Bhaijaan did 320 crore in India because of its content. Salman or Shah Rukh are both equally capable of bringing audiences in hordes to theatres in the first weekend, but after that it all comes down to the content. For Dilwale there is an added factor of the big clash with Bajirao Mastani, which makes it even more difficult as the business gets divided. One positive is, historically, because of the number of holidays, the Christmas weekend has been bigger than Eid. So if Dilwale carries the same appreciation as Bajrangi Bhaijaan did, it has an outside chance to beat the film. Having said that, box office is extremely unpredictable. Let’s wait and watch.
Q. How much Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2 needs to collect for gaining Super Hit and Blockbuster verdicts? – Sambuddha
A. Pyaar Ka Punchnama was made on a budget of Rs 19 crore (including P&A). It’s already a clean hit at the box office and should end with net box office collections of Rs 55-60 crore or maybe even more, giving it Super Hit status.
Q. Would Chennai Express, Krrish 3, Dhoom 3 & PK be highest grosser if they released during non-festive weekends? – Pokemon
A. Christmas, Diwali and Eid are big because some of the most bankable superstars in the industry, release their big budget films during this period. Otherwise, there really isn’t a big difference between releasing a film during Eid and Independence Day weekend. For example, the ticket prices of Brothers was as high as Bajrangi Bhaijaan. The screen count (release size) was a little smaller for Brothers, but that’s only because Salman Khan commands a bigger followings, especially at smaller centres, which ensures that his films get a wider release. If Bajrangi Bhaijaan released on August 14th this year, it would have still collected close to what it did during Eid. October 2nd is also a huge weekend, if Diwali doesn’t fall in the same month. Films have also performed well during the Post IPL period. Ready, Rowdy Rathore, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Tanu Weds Manu Returns have performed exceedingly well during that period. So to answer your question, yes, all those films would have done still performed very well. The difference wouldn’t have been much more than 15 – 20%.
Q. With good content movies like RAEES and FAN, can SRK will get his no. 1 position in overseas again? – Mayur
A. And who says those are ‘good content’ movies, when they haven’t even released? Let them release first. Just doing a different film, doesn’t ensure good content. A lot of things have to fall in place for a film to be received well by the audience.
Q. After seeing the beautiful song and massive trailer of Bajirao Mastani can we safely say that it will easily beat Dilwale this Christmas? – Siraj
A. Both the teaser and song promo of Bajirao Mastani has received a mixed response. The film isn’t carrying the hype that a big film like Bajirao Mastani should, which has already worried its investors. The makers would be hoping that the theatrical trailer (which is expected to be out soon) and the music get a good response. This would ensure that Bajirao Mastani can atleast match upto the might of Dilwale. It’s a forgone conclusion that Dilwale will take a bigger opener, how much bigger, is something that remains to be seen. Raees vs Sultan is a battle of equals, not Bajirao Mastani vs Dilwale.
Q. Why are producers obsessed about opening? Even with mediocre opening films can earn huge money lifetime. Why isn’t the focus more on ‘content’? – gj007
A. Filmmaking is a long and difficult process. No one knows what works and what doesn’t. If they did, films wouldn’t flop at the box office. Sometimes, even a film that has a solid script, can go wrong during the production and post production stage. If the casting isn’t right, if the actors don’t perform well, if the director doesn’t execute the script as well as he should, budget constraints, bad music etc. Even difference of opinion between the director, producer, actors.. can make a big difference to the final outcome. Only if everything falls into place, do we get a classic. And even classics like Andaaz Apna Apna didn’t work at the box office. Finally, there is nothing like good or bad content. Anything that works with the majority is perceived to be good content. There are quite a few people who did not like Bajrangi Bhaijaan, PK, Chennai Express or even 3 Idiots. For them, those films did not have good content. So since no one knows what’s good or bad, what works and what doesn’t, a lot of energy is spent on ensuring that films are packaged and marketing well, which should ensure at least a good initial at the box office. When films get a good initial, good films make a lot of money, average films do well enough to earn some money and bad films end up recovering investment. Otherwise, the fate of bad films (Shaandaar being the most recent example) is sealed in the first two days itself.

Haha lovely anser for siraj..good going indicine..love the way you gave anser ..
A lot has been spoken abt the fan following of these three khans but to be fair to all of them i think box office is the only barometer of being the biggest , in that case aamir is the most powerful khan & is way ahead of srk & salman . I want to ask indicine isint it true ? If srk & salman have more following then why cant they compete with aamir at the box office?
Now that is how a good answer should be written. Well done, @indicine. That Raees and Fan answer is brilliant.
It is entirely laughable to assume that Raees and Fan would be ‘content-rich’ just bcoz the directors have a somewhat better track record. Grow up, SRKians.
‘Hope’ and ‘Blind Assumptions’ are two different things.
@indicine…what will be the Dilwale footfall in avg WOM?
@AK, to know aamir fees for any of his movie in recent times then see the profit of the movie and take 30% from it, that’s the fees of aamir. E.g Pk budget is 85crore and collection is 735crore so 650 crore is the profit. So aamir fees is 195 crore.
Thanks @ indicine given nice answer to haters of Akshay Kumar has nothing to prove himself he know what to do or not he is in Bollywood over 23 years his success story is just phenomenal unlike paps boy .
Which production house has the highest box-office success if only last 5 releases of them are considered? #AskIndicine
Agree that some SRK fans are going overboard regarding the content of FAN and Raees. I m an SRK fan and also excited about the two movies but we should wait for their release before calling them classics.
so many dumb questions. such a waste of a Q&A.
Q. Can Dilwale beat Bajrangi Bhaijaan in india and Overseas – Raj
We havent seen Dilwale so how can indicine predict something like that? Always the same question and the same answer is: wait until you see Dilwale and Bajirao Mastani. if bajirao is good than Dilwale is not beating BBhaijaan.
Q. How much Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2 needs to collect for gaining Super Hit and Blockbuster verdicts? – Sambuddha
why dont you spend 2min on google and look up the budget of the movie. then you look up the box office numbers and you could answer the question for yourself.
Q. With good content movies like RAEES and FAN, can SRK will get his no. 1 position in overseas again? – Mayur
Did you see both movies? How can you say those are good content movies? such a stupid question.
Q. After seeing the beautiful song and massive trailer of Bajirao Mastani can we safely say that it will easily beat Dilwale this Christmas? – Siraj
Did you read the comments under the indicine article about the song? you can see iit received a mixed response. it doesnt mean that everyone liked it just because you liked it.
Q. Why are producers obsessed about opening? Even with mediocre opening films can earn huge money lifetime. Why isn’t the focus more on ‘content’? – gj007
Producers put money in a movie because they want more money. its all about money
@dipsy…jeena teri gali mein released on Monday 1991. i remember bcz the songs were chartbusters.
give ans
can you list indian movie
with adjusted inflation
we all know
gone with the wind highest hollywood grosser all time
india its sholey aur hahk aur gadar
pls give ans
Wow. . Just wow! Indicine is comparing CE with PK,3idiots etc.
@nipun, where exactly was the comparison? Read again. Just putting names of 4-5 films in the same sentence, doesn’t make it a comparison between those films.
I read an article which said the script of bajrangi bhaijaan was turned down by hrithik and other because of a script price. Im confused as to whether the producers pay the writer or the writer pays the producer
‘AKSHAY kumar is one of the biggest success stories in the industry’
‘Nothing left to acheive or prove’
I like it .
NYC nyc ?
Hrithik and others turned down bajrangi bhaijaan because of a high script price. Im confused as to whether the writer had to pay the producer or was it the other way around
@Anshul because hrithik has given disasters like kites nd guzarish.
Nd his highest grosser krish 3 budget 150 nd collection only 180 on diwali festival with sequel factor . So many advantages still fails to acheive 200 cr .
Khan’s r way ahead then hrithik.
Don’t insult salman shahrukh Amir by comparing with hrithik .
listened Jalte Diye song from PRDP today,, Wow Song of the year listened 52 times and counting
@sunny chechi. You must be the biggest idiot to compare RK with Hritik!! Compare Rk with Akshay and Varun okay!! Successful May be but Hit no way Shah Rukh Salman Ajay . Check boi india. How many times you bring this foolish question to @indicine? Leave thullu alone. He is by far more sensible and knows akki present stands. Following that ansa he has nothing to prove is the dumbest response I have ever heard.
Who is the action director for Shivaay? Which Hollywood action directors is working for Ajay in his Shivaay??
What will be the approx screen count of Dilwale as BM clashing, can it get 3000screen?
@Ahsan, who told you all these rubbish. Srk is not even 5% of aamir. There is no match ti aamir. Srk neither has versatility and perfection like aamir, nor style and a cinematic presence like Salman. Aamir and Salman are best and srk is nothing in front of them .aamir and salman are much much more popular and loved megastars than crap useless tiny star srk. Srk is nothing in front of them and he is most hated actor. He also has given many flops and disasters. His YLJK is lowest grosser of last decade and lowest amongst all khans. Ha ha ha. Popularity my foot? Srk is nothing in front of aamir and Salman. Period.
Will Tamasha cross 100cr mark with decent wom?
@ANK aamir has huge fan following. Who the hell are you to blabber rubbish. Dint you moron know that gahjini was first movie to cross 100 Cr? Aamir has largest fan following in India as big as Salman and third khan sarookh is tiny in front of aamir. And in igerseas there is no match to megastar aamir khan as he has highest fan folllowwubg in overseas. Srk id notuny in front of him. Dangal even in worst case will cross 250 Cr minimum. And if content clicks than 400 Cr is definitely on cards. It will be highets grosser of next year. Dhoom 3 was H
ATBB even with average story and proved that it was only aamir’s star power and screen presence and his fan following why it became ATHG as well as ATBB worldwide. So shut your mouth. Aamir is biggest megastar of Bollywood with largest fan following worldwide. No one is close to him.
@ANK, Aamir has largest fan following worldwide. Period. Salman and srk are nowhere close to him. Period. Those strugglers keep chasing aamir’s records while aamir keeps creating new records. There is simply no comparison. Aamir is most loved and respected megastar in India as well as overseas. Srk and Salman cant come close to aamir in popularity.
by how much will shaandaar affect shahid kapoor’s career?
Only 8 questions answered???
@indicine u only answered 8 questions u promise to answer 10question
All Akki haters how do u feeling like now indicine has given smart answer to haters ha ha . Love u indicine .
Answer is part correct, part wrong. Did you read comments under the song on Youtube? Every comment is praising it, the sets, choreography, music and performances. song video has already crossed 20000 likes in few days.
Dilwale will have bigger opening, but BM will win in the long run.
@Siraj, people are mostly talking about how gorgeous Deepika is looking and the grandeur of the sets. The song promo has received a better response than the first teaser, but the film, in general, is not hot in the trade. It will take a good opening in Mumbai circuit and surrounding areas, but how much will the North Indian and other section of the audience be interested in Bajirao’s story, is something that remains to be seen.
The clash is very unfortunate, to be very honest. Bajirao Mastani is Bhansali’s decade long dream. But releasing against a big film like Dilwale is suicidal. Yes, he announced it first. But so did the makers of Welcome Back and Bombay Velvet last year. When PK came, they moved. Unless Dilwale turns out to be one of the worst films of 2015, there really isn’t much of a contest between the two films. Not just because of the star cast, but also because of the genre.
@indicine obviously it was not a direct comparison ! But if you place two movies in a list considering a common factor between them, the readers will feel like me. 3 idiots is one of the most loved films of all time. PK and bajrangi bhaijaan are also mostly loved by people. Yes, there are still a few people who didn’t like them.
But chennai express? ? It is miles behind. Many people will consider pk and bajrangi as one of the best movies of the respective years. . But I don’t think anyone will consider CE as one of the best films of 2015.
@Nipun, it doesn’t really matter what you or anyone else thinks. Good word-of-mouth = good trends at the box office. If a film sustains well after the first weekend, it means people are liking it and recommending it to others. Chennai Express had excellent word-of-mouth, one of the best of 2015. And unlike Dhoom 3 and Krrish 3, it competed against a big film like OUATIMD and still went on to become the highest grosser of all time.
Another example is 2011’s Ready. A film that was thrashed by the critics, but was by far the most universally liked film of the year.
