During times when it has become all about taking sides and giving a political angle to every issue, it’s important to hear both sides of the story, before making a decision on who’s right or wrong.
We’ve already covered Anurag Kashyap‘s side of the story in detail. But below are a few statements that he has given to the media (from different sources, including social media):
- I always wondered what it felt like to live in North Korea .. Ab to plane pakadney ki bhi zaroorat nahin..
- There is no film more honest than UDTA PUNJAB .. And any person or party opposing it is actually GUILTY of promoting drugs
- I request Congress, AAP and other political parties to stay out of my battle. It’s my Rights vs the Censorship. I speak only on my behalf
- It’s my fight Vs a dictatorial man sitting there operating like an oligarch in his constituency of censor board, that’s my North Korea
- All the trolls referring to Paanch and BF and others.. Sorry they had not invented Twitter then you idiots. Fight was the sam
- FYI I have fought the UPA more on censorship issues than the NDA. But you know what , there was no Nihalani then. So the paid trolls can FO
- It’s pathetic that the party supported and paid trolls are trying to make me look like an agent of congress or AaP. Where as I have been working closely with this ministry and the MOS mr. Rathore on the censorship issues
- I have all our texts and messages saved so if the government is trying to make there incompetence look good then they’ve picked a wrong person
- It is our job as a Producer to fight for the film. We want to release the film on June 17 otherwise the financial repercussions will be huge, massive, humungous losses that one will suffer.
- They want us to remove city names, words like MLA, MLCs. All these things have been told in person. He is not putting it on paper. The moment he puts it on paper we have the option to go to the tribunal. We can’t go to the tribunal because he has not put anything on paper.
- I am saying everybody is supporting or not supporting with their own agenda. For me I am not a person with an agenda. I want this film to come out. I am an artiste; I want to know my rights. Please explain my rights clearly to me.
- Anybody protesting that Punjab is being presented in a bad light is all hogwash, it is all bullshit. None of that is true.
- He (Censor Board chief Pahlaj Nihalani) is making it very apparent. He calls people and says that. I praised him when he passed the trailer of Udta Punjab. I kept him out of the conversation. He has an imaginary problem. His problem is that why am I not going to him to be his slave to solve my problem. I don’t want to. I don’t want to go through the humiliation of sitting there and seeing my film being mutilated while he teaches me Cinema of which he has zero understanding of where it is going now.
Excerpts from Pahlaj Nihalani‘s interview with Hindustan Times (You can read the full interview here)
- On 89 cuts: “Who has counted these cuts? The producers of Udta Punjab have not even implemented any cuts in the film as yet. So how does the media know about the number of cuts?”
- On whether he has met Anurag Kashyap: “I haven’t met him even once about Udta Punjab. We’ve never spoken on this matter. In the past when a film produced by him — NH 10 — was in censor trouble, I did my best to help him follow the censor guidelines. When there was objection to his title Bombay Velvet, we at the CBFC passed the title to ensure Mr Kashyap’s creative urges do not get suppressed. Now when he is not getting his way with the CBFC, I’m the biggest villain in the creative world. So be it. Mr Kashyap is like a child being denied a toy.
- “I believe he has called me an extremely egotistical man. A lot of people feel the same about him.”
- “Do all those TV anchors and their panellists who are shouting down the CBFC and calling me all sorts of names understand what they are talking about? Do they know the issues involved?”
- “Udta Punjab claims to mirror the truth about the whole of Punjab. According to the film, 70% of the youngsters are drug addicts. Where did they get this figure from? The film’s dialogue explicitly states Punjab is banjar (barren) land and the people are kanjar (wayward, promiscuous). Tell me is this not vilifying the whole of Punjab?”
- On the film having a disclaimer that it’s a work of fiction and not reality: “What is the disclaimer worth when after claiming to be a work of fiction the film proceeds to name every major town in Punjab from Amritsar to Tarn Taran as a drug den? How is it a work of fiction when you are naming real towns from Punjab? When Kashyap and his gang of Wasseypur calls me egotistical and someone called Suhel Seth feels I have feeble intellect, I’d like them to use their highly developed intelligence to understand that the CBFC is not controlled by me. There’s a committee which I head. Yes, I’ve the final authority to ask for changes before certification. It’s an authority given to me by the government. I repeat for the umpteenth time — I am only following the guidelines. And, I’ll continue to do so even if intellectuals like Kashyap and Seth abuse me for doing my job.
- “The CBFC has never stopped any film from being released on time. When Udta Punjab came to us for certification, we found the film carpeted with the filthiest abuses. Almost every line that Shahid Kapoor speaks is filled with the most explicit abuses and gaalis (expletives) that even I had never heard. We said ok let him abuse when his character is under the influence of drugs. But, why should he talk like that when normal? Who speaks like that in everyday conversations? We’ve even allowed Alia Bhatt to abuse. But we couldn’t allow Punjab to be damned and labeled a drug haven.”
- “Let him fight it out. Then don’t blame us for the delay in release. It wasn’t Kashyap who came to us for censoring. Jeetendra ji on behalf of Balaji Telefilms and film director Abhishek Choubey came for the censoring. We suggested the cuts, which they agreed to take and promised to return after making the cuts. But, instead Anurag Kashyap decided to go to the media. He wants to know why we haven’t given him a formal letter about the cuts. It’s because the film is with the revising committee. Until they come to a decision, we cannot issue a formal letter.”
- “All those who are talking about creative freedom should first see the film. How are they discussing Udta Punjab without seeing the context in which we have suggested the cuts?”
- “Let me make this very clear. There is no political pressure whatsoever on the censor board regarding Udta Punjab. The CBFC is being allowed to do its job. Anurag Kashyap approached Mr Arun Jaitley but it was made very clear that the government does not interfere in censorship.”

The thing is that #PahlajNihalani still in the orgasm spell of “PRDP”
what patience everyone talking about here it is Mr. pahlani who refused to give official letter regarding the cuts just told the makers verbally so that the film will delay and will not release on time cause of his loyalty towards bjp. That is what till now Mr. pahlani is doing as he doesn’t want the film to release that is why delaying the process so that the makers can’t release the film on time and who the hell is pahlaj to decide if the movie puts Punjab in bad light or not let the movie release and let the audience decide but no he doesn’t want to do this

picking out random lines and feeding it to media to present his case dat movie is demeaning to punjab is plain nonsense…..simple thing is why does censor board feel d need to see if it offends sensibilities…..in ds case of a particular state..its not ur job…..ur job is to certify films…leave it for d audience to decide…anyone who knows or interested to watch UP knows ki its a movie for adults..has abuses…talks about drugs in punjab ….so dey can make out for themselves whether to watch or not….secondly if dey do go watch ..dey will know wats it about…how does it portray punjab and dey can mk dr voices heard…d movie will tank ..simple ..if people dnt lk it….why can dese people trust our audiences…..also anyone who follows news related to Punjab…or has been dr …knows ds open truth…drugs are a big problem………..all ds while wen bollywood showed us punjabis jst dancing..hving fun…punjabi weddings..songs..khet..etc….golden temple…funny characters…stereotypical…no one had a problem…now underbelly of punjab is portrayed and dey hv a issue…………..yaar kis kis ki sensibi;lity offend hogi is bina par agar cbfc decision lene lagii toh ho chuki india mein movie release:
religion is a touchy topic
politics…esp mkin film on real life politicians past or present…again a no no
abuses hai ..sex hai…nudity hain…again no no
riots par movie hai…wont let it release coz it will inflame public…all B.S
STATE ka naam hai movie mein …again problem..
i am wd anurag ..pls fight it out till d end…u call it as it is…and r not afraid to voice ur opinion….lastly if everythng fails…upload d movies torrent and hv a payment system….i will pay and watch it uncensored…i m sure other cinema lovers…ur fans…fans of dese stars…and people interested in UP will support it…atleast i hope so………but i pray ki movie is relleased wd 0 cuts
@babaji @nipun lets have another session tonight like last night …… this time for sunny makkiholic or fasal karela neem charha or tiger the real bitc.
As an audience we don’t give a damn to that disclaimer…
And most of the audience didn’t even read it…
So in the name of disclaimer or fiction you can’t show anything….
I m totally agree with CBFC….
@indicine Why my comments are still in awaiting moderation. I just said the truth.
Very bad.
I think indicine is huge supporter of pahlaj nihalani. So they are not publishing my comment.
I don’t know why bhakts are targeting Anurag unnecessarily just because he dared to tag their God Modi in his tweet.Nobody else is blaming Modi for this issue except some dumb politicians.
As a producer he has every right to fight this battle and the best thing is he has clearly not tried to gain any kind of sympathy by taking the support of attention seeking politicians and clearly refrained from bashing BJP and the ever corrupt akali dal.For them speaking against any injustice happening is to gain cheap publicity. He has earned enough fame to not use Pahlaj’s name for publicising a movie starring Shahid Alia and Kareena.
Criticise kejriwal as much as you want but as a filmmaker and Producer Anurag is within his right to tag the PM or rant on twitter feeling helpless.
@Arjun Loved your comment.Hilarious and sensible.
I am with Anurag in this matter
Thanks indicine for posting both sides of the issue.. now after going through this post i must say it was all publicity stunt by anurag kashyap but it has already backfired…
Double standards ppl have ….. Will watch vulgar comedies, hollywood movies with sex scenes, tv shows like games of thrones having incestuous themes and even porn in isolation but in public will talk abt indian culture in danger due to UP type movies …… some ppl wont like it but thats the truth ….. pathetic ….. totally with UP team on this issue even though dont like anurag …… we need movies on serious and relevant issues …..
This is because of sultan and no of screens they will get on 15 july. Publicity ki ma di
@ 8:05 pm:
100% right ….. Slang use is common amongst teenagers ….. many ppl use them in their conversations ….. ain’t advocating use of slang but thats reality ….. in which world does this jerk pahlaj live ….. for him only drug addicts use slang ….. lolz …… even here at indicine ppl and adults write words like chut@& etc ….. if not for the fear of getting their comments rejected ppl will start using slang here too …… all this is purely a political issue due to punjab state and nothing else …..
@IamBollywoodFan or crappy emtyfull 3 fan at 6:37 pm. Than go to pluto or mars you idiot. No one give bal to shitty emptyfull 3.
Shyam benegal said udta punjab is well made film.
I think its not about vulgarity, sexuality…. its abt community… may be that’s y they have prblm with film…
Bcz in India ye jo creativity, ‘A’ certificate, modernisation ki baat kar rhe h… community k naam pe kal yahi AAG lgate ghumenge… that’s y censor looks stupid in India…
@Sasha, try typing in english so that others can understand…Don’t use some alien language…
Is it Anurag alone like being portrayed here or are other people too supporting his view?
Director Kabir Khan talks about the UP issue, “We all know to what extent the drug problems exist in Punjab. I was shooting last year in border areas of Punjab for Bajrangi Bhaijaan and everybody there was only talking about it. We saw people, we saw families who were suffering with this problem. And now if a film is trying to highlight and put focus on this problem then how is it negatively portraying people? If any film is talking about it then it’s actually going to help highlight the problem and it will help people to galvanise and try fight this problem. I mean, are we ostriches that we dig a hole, put our head into it and pretend that nobody is seeing us? It’s a genuine problem and it needs to be addressed.”
Amir Khan speaks : “It’s very unfortunate. I am pained to see that the film is going through this. According to my knowledge the film is based on drug addiction and it delivers a social message. I don’t think there is anything that should be cut or audience should be kept away from seeing. It reflects badly on CBFC and hope the film gets justice at the tribunal. The voice of the film and filmmaker shouldn’t be throttled. They should have a free voice to speak. I believe there were supposed to be changes in CBFC and there won’t be any cuts; only certification as per age group. So it’s strange and shocking to see so many cuts in the film. I haven’t seen the film but to hear these things are strange. Not only Bollywood, ever Indian who wants freedom of speech to prevail should come out. The Tribunal is going to watch the film and I hope they deliver justice to the film. I wish them all the best.”
Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra says the “scissors” of the censor board must be abolished. “You can fight that out. Don’t agree to the cuts (made by CBFC). There is a Revising Committee. Then there is High Court and Supreme Court. Fight it out. I’m part of the censor committee since last five months. Day and night we have been working, and our recommendation is to abolish the scissor. There should be no scissors. End of story. We should have a rating system.”
Imtiaz Ali in joint press conference : “I am representing myself. I haven’t seen the film but anything going against film is going against freedom of expression..We all are here together so that is a good thing.”
Zoya Akhtar in joint press conference: “A certification board is acting as a Censor Board. I think there is a constant denial of what’s going on in the society. But freedom of expression is important. There are lot of scenes which have not been allowed where women are treated badly but I can’t stop it. Udta Punjab is our fight not only theirs.”
Mahesh Bhatt in joint press conference: “My film Zakham also ran into trouble, subsequently the film got an award. I came here to join my shoulder with other filmmakers.”
Aanand L Rai in joint press conference: “I will just say that no one doubted me as much i have been here. I was never doubted when I was in school.I would say show some trust.”
Abhishek Chaubey in joint press conference : “If we do not take a step now than in future no other director can work on political films or any other topics. All who are supporting , I am happy and we all will stand for the right thing.”
People here are calling Anurag egoistic, stupid and marketing his movie. Fine. But why the above mentioned known and respected people are talking about this movie and supporting it? Are they being paid by UP team to do marketing of the movie or are they seeing some injustice being done and speaking against it???? Think about it.
@indicine why are you laying. When have you provide detailed side of anurag kashyap’s side. You have just provide which he have experienced in Twitter. But you only provide the palhaj nilani’s side here. Then why don’t you revealed what censors had demanded to cuts in film. They demanded to cuts punjab word from its title. The word MLA, election, amritsar, taran taran and all cities of punjab which are included in movie. Demanded all cues words, druge use sense, shahid’s urinating sense and so on. They also demanded to remove’ chitta ve ‘and ‘harami’ from chitta ve song. I hope you are listening and if you are not follower of palhaj nihalini then you will publish my comment and will also publish articles about it. Thank you
drug abuse is rampant everywhere in india so why take a particular state and malign it, so why not udta bharat

Veteran filmmaker & government appointment censorship reviewing committee’s chief Shyam Benegal ji praises Udta Punjub….
CBD exceeded my expectations in every way thanks. I’ve struggled with insomnia on years, and after demanding CBD like because of the key once upon a time, I for ever knowing a loaded evening of relaxing sleep. It was like a weight had been lifted mad my shoulders. The calming effects were merciful still scholarly, allowing me to drift slow logically without feeling woozy the next morning. I also noticed a reduction in my daytime apprehension, which was an unexpected but receive bonus. The taste was a fraction earthy, but nothing intolerable. Overall, CBD has been a game-changer quest of my siesta and angst issues, and I’m appreciative to keep discovered its benefits.
