The acting-career of Saif Ali Khan is nearing its end as ‘Rangoon’ is the 5th consecutive failure for the actor, whose last successful films were Race 2 (2013) and Cocktail (2012). Go Goa Gone lost some money but it wasn’t a outright failure and it didn’t feature Saif in the lead as well.
Saif was never a bankable star in solo films. He rejected a film like Aditya Chopra’s Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge at the beginning of his career. The turning point for him came when Shah Rukh Khan’s Kal Ho Na Ho released in 2003 and did well at the box office.
The following two years was when he touched his peak and signed films with the Top-2 female stars of the industry – Hum Tum with Rani Mukherji in 2004 and Salaam Namastey with Preity Zinta in 2005. It was also the time when not only the actresses, but also the banner Yash Raj Films was delivering back-to-back hits.
The highlights of Saif’s career are those first few films with Akshay Kumar at the beginning of his career. His three films with the Khans – Salman’s Hum Saath Saath Hai in the late 90s, Aamir’s Dil Chahta Hai in 2001 and Shah Rukh’s Kal Ho Na Ho in 2003. His other hits include Kya Kehna, Love Aaj Kal, Cocktail and the Race series of films.
His next release is ‘Chef’, a solo film directed by Raja Krishna Menon. It’s scheduled to release in July this year.

Think you’re being very negative on Saif, Shahid and Kangana. Saif can bounce back with Chef, Shahid has Padmavati and Kangana is a self made actress who will always surprise us. It’s unfair to write them off. Ranbir and Anushka came back big time after BV so a disaster doesn’t mean anything.
No mater of failure fur him…. He is the NAWAB and that’s the only truth. His struggle in real life is similar with his struggle as an stand-up comedian in Humshkals….

I hope actors like Imran khan, emraan hashmi, saif and shahid get some superb roles and get blockbusters and superhits just to show to these people that they are not nobodies..sure they don’t have the sort of craze that top 5 command, but when in form, they are in a different acting league altogether..you can not have thrillers without emraan hashmi, all his thrillers are awesome. U can not have rom coms without saif , u can not have good educated classy movies without shahid and although people write off Imran khan, he has the perfect looks for a good sweet male hero in rom coms which he has successfully played throughout his career and will hopefully continue to do so winning our hearts

Phantom was a terrific film but hugely underrated. His acting in love aaj kal & phantom was too good. He’s a good actor with a suave personality. These newcomers will give the so called “100cr” movies but act like him… not a chance.

Phantom was an average movie not a flop
Bullet Raja and Phantom were good movies. Had it starred more bankable star it would have been successful. Saif has simply lost it and it high time he stick to those supporting roles. His top 3 performances as follows (IMO) :

2. Dil Chahta Hai
3. Kal Ho Naa Ho
He has passed his prime and age is also not on his side. He should stick to character or supporting roles and should not even attempt any solo roles.

Saif is above boxoffice. His choice of films are also deliberate. Saif loves risk taking. Be it PARINEETA, PHANTOM, AGENT VINOD, KURBAAN or OMKARA.
Saif’s career may accelerate or decelerate. He always loves taking risk. And a reason why I see most of the Saif films in Cinema.
You think Salman can do PARINEETA and attract crowd to cinemas wihtout EDX? No! Never.

@Romance calculate the nos of Hits Ajay Devgn has with that of Saif. Count the number of times Ajay has been Nominated and Won Awards Parallel to Amitabh Sir only both have 2+ National and Filmfare. We know how Saif got National for Him tum tru his mom. The Signing Fees of Ajay who purposely decided to cut down his pay based on Its Final Verdict Collection was way higher than Saif. How many Multicast Ajay did and came out as 2nd Lead? Hddcs(debatable but he was not nominated as Best Supporting actor for Hddcs rather Best actor too) both him and Salman were nominated best actor. Ishq was a super equal role for both Aamir and Ajay who at that Time was giving more Hits than Aamir. Finally Ajay solo HKK was a record opener without Shetty just like all his Awards. Omkara and Kaache Dhaage was totally Ajay movie. I am still trying to figure which movie Ajay did and came out as supporting. Ishq? Hddcs? London Dreams? Khakee? Suhaag? Loc Kargil? Inssan? Dilwale? All the Best? Cocktail was at the Verge of Getting into 100 cr just like ZNMD but whose movie stopped them and grossed 100 cr? Who gave Milan Luthian,Shetty powerful verdicts when they debuted as Directors from nowhere? How many TPR(most watched)movies of Saif are in top 20? Or IMDb?

Yes Saif total collection is pretty high but mind you 90% of them are Multistarrer movies or Huge Production House sponsorer banner while at that time Ajay was busy Experimenting his movies Flop or Hit with non Commercial movies….Arguably the 1st Superstar of his generation to merge both Commercial and Art movies at such an early career. Some of Those movies were not successful but even his Flops got Him National awards…Now that’s a STATEMENT and LIFETIME HOMEWORK for the person you are calling Bigger than AJ. Funny kid!
RANGOON was never publicized as most other films, which is surprising because of its cost. It ‘s opening needed more drama and the content of the film shown to be more appealing. Saif, needed to do more as the star in raising the appeal of the film so that people will want to see it, if even it folds up after a good opening. Look at SRK,, Salman, Hrithik and Akshay, they never leave the publicity of their films to chance, wheather good or bad ,and I am sure that Rangoon would not have been the disaster that it appears to be heading for.

First of all i am glad that atleast someone pointed out that it was Kal Ho Naa Ho was the actual turning point of Saif’s career and not exactly Dil Chahta Hai.
So to what extent did it turn Saif’s career? It made him a popular and a bankable star. Yes it is perhaps wrong to say that he was never a bankable solo star. Ever since KHNH he either had a hit or a critically acclaimed celebrated film every year. Since last few years his graph has gone down heavily and his PR work also hasnt been impressive. But Saif definitely saw quite a few memorable times in the industry during 2000-2012 period.
Also a star is judged by his openings right? Salaam Namastey opened well, even Omkara managed quite a decent opening, Both Eklavya and Ta ra rum pum had bigger first weeks than that of Namastey London which was released around a same time. And really can trade forget the kind of openings Race and Love Aaj Kal too? Race was a Record opener and LAK had taken plexes by storm. Even Cocktail took a 10cr+ opening back in 2012. And though Phantom crashed in the second week, it had a fairly decent first week.
He has been inconsistent though. Kurban flopped badly rightly after Love Aaj Kal. Tashan and Thoda pyar thoda magic couldnt succeed even though Saif was coming off a Race. Then yes, the production houses were the top ones, promotional strategies were great, the actresses were the top ones and music always helped but give this leading man of all these films a little bit of credit.
He might not be as saleable now, but at a certain point of time he definitely was.
