Yash Raj Films’ has announced their next biggie ‘Thugs of Hindostan’ for the Diwali weekend in 2018. The release period is interesting because Aamir Khan has dominated the Christmas weekend with films like Taare Zameen Par (2007), Ghajini (2008), 3 Idiots (2009), Dhoom 3 (2013) and PK (2014). All films were blockbusters and four out of 5 films were not only the highest grossers of the year, but also the highest grossers of all time.
Ever since the industry got its 3 big festive weekends, Diwali hasn’t really been as lucrative or successful as the Christmas or Eid festive weekends. The Diwali holiday is the biggest day of the year for film business, but very few films have sustained in the long run – both because of lack of holidays and quality of films not being upto expectation.
Given Aamir’s unprecedented success during Christmas, it’s a weekend that he wouldn’t want to let go of. So the announcement of ‘Thugs of Hindostan’ for the Diwali weekend in 2018 does raise quite a few questions:
One, Shah Rukh’s film with Aanand L Rai was announced just a few days before ‘Thugs Of Hindostan’, did Aditya Chopra and SRK mutually decide the release date of their films? Interestingly, in the past, Shah Rukh has never announced the release dates of his films more than 2 years in advance. He had also said he doesn’t like announcing the release of his films before the shooting begins.
Two, did Aamir agree to let go of his most successful release period, more so since Diwali is on November 8 2018 – just 6 weeks before Christmas?

Surely this was mutually agreed between SRK, YRF and Aamir to avoid the mess that happened at Raees vs Sultan. Raees backing off was also purely because of this strong SRK-YRF relationship and no other reason. The relationship they share SRK will never clash with YRF regardless there is Salman, Aamir, Hrithik in it. Eid for salman, diwali for aamir and xmas for srk. Hrithik/Akshay/ajay are yet to announce. They will have big movies too.

If pk or bb had released on this day then again both would cross 300 cr easily … we should not forget one that big Hollywood projects are coming on Christmas 2017,2018,2019,2010 with likes of star wars and Avatar the most successful franchises so there is nothing to let go of and no big Hollywood film will come on Eid and Diwali 2018 !!!!!!!!!!!!

Diwali 2017 has Golmaal 3. Maybe another film will be released too. If your king can afford another big clash, he is welcome.
And it is for everyone understood that Eid period is only meant for Salman. As long as he is there, none dares to take it.
And yes, although it hasn’t been announced yet, either ETT sequel or another film of Salman will be releasing on that date.

I still feel Diwali is a huge festival period for business that has been underutilized . In 2010 G3 and AR clashed on Diwali . G3 was a Blockbuster and the 2nd Highest Grosser of 2010 . AR was a massive failure . In 2011 Ra.One had a Solo release . The pre release buzz for Ra.One was unprecedented but because of poor content it could not sustain in the weekdays and underperformed . In 2012 JTHJ and SOS clashed and both the movies were 100 CR Grossers and combined collections of both the movies crossed 220 CR . In 2013 K3 had a Solo release and became the Highest Grosser Of All Time beating CE . The collections of K3 are under scrutiny but according to Indicine K3 was the 2nd Highest Grosser of 2013 . In 2014 HNY had a Solo release broke all the opening records and crawled in the 200 CR Club . In 2015 PRDP had a bumper opening of 40+ and entered the 200 CR Club . Ra.One, HNY and PRDP could not capitalise on the Diwali weekend as all the movies were extremely poor and crap . This year ADHM and Shivaay will clash on Diwali and if both the movies turn out to entertaining for the audience both the movies can emerge successful at the Box Office . So I feel Diwali cannot be underestimated despite not producing as brilliant results as Eid and Christmas . !!!!!!!!
