Note: We haven’t included two prolific actors – Sunny Deol and Govinda – in the list. Deol was a superstar, even though he wasn’t very consistent at the box office. He had quite a few hugely successful films like Border, Darr, Zindi and Ghatak, just to name a few. Govinda delivered several hits with David Dhawan and was one of the most popular and successful actors of the 90s. We are currently in the process of retrieving data from old film magazines. We are also working with a well-known trade analyst to rectify the 90s data, which isn’t as accurate as we’d want it to be at the moment.
Sunny Deol rules
Salman ruled from 1989 till 1999 & was way ahead from other stars.
From 2000 to 2009 he faced a rough patch due to controversies & stars like Srk chased his records of 1989-99 & came close to him.
2010 onwards Salman rised again & established himself as the biggest megastar the country has ever seen.
@Anand yes thanks a lot dear. I am khush. Very khush indeed. But still little sad that all these risks were still no where close to the epic risks taken by bhai such as with films like saavan, marigold, yuvraaj, Main Aur Mrs khanna, veer, nishchay, yeh majhdhaar, bandhan, tumko Naa bhool payenge, etc. :P
What I believe is SRK shine through awards function more than any other source.
Like as a child I use to believe best film winners were also top grossers.
Yes mostly were, but how can just ddlj, dil toh pagal hai and kuch kuch hota hai swept all 90s credit? ?
Though SRK was and is a great actor but right after 90s decade finished, media started saying its Hrithik vs Srk, Why salman was not in race while he had top 3 grossers in 90’s.?
“The bollywood king”? No body deserved this tag as early as SRK got and bit underving initially. Everyone faced huge competition with each other. And at that time people hardly count box offise numbers, whatever looked gold like best film “Hum dil De chuke sanam” perceived to be a blockbuster. That’s why Salman never a win a award show was so popularised.
Its all about media who helped to raised the standard of star.
During Salman’s lowest phase too he commanded huge fan following and popularity for right and wrong reasons.
He had huge potential and he was still considered to be a superstar throughout the decade, I don’t believe and disagree with Indicine who says Dus ka Dum raised his popularity in interere , but I saw his huge fan followings everywhere every corner even before that. Yes Tere Naam did great job for him though its an overrated movie for me but it upgraded his popularity and fan following straghtaway, I never seen such a craze like that average grosser had.
Its just that Salman clicked since Wanted, It was the film and genre people were expecting a macho handsome man to do which actually suits him rather being going watching his comedy or romantic genre.
So he clicked, people starts investing on him for interesting characters like chulbul pandey and then rest is history where Media and audience started boxoffice numbers through Facebook and Twitter. ?
@ank …like yr SRK says picture abhi baaki hai mere dost…same way decade khatam nahi huwa hai mere dost….SRK already has a FAN !!!! ….and Raes may be on the way to become Bombay Velvet!!! So jus waiting …..don’t worry Ank SRK never disappoints !!!! Sic !!!
If you counted KKHA as salman khan’s movie then the whole article is pointless.
@ indicine . It is clear from your analysis that Salman was bigger star and more consistent then shah rukh and he came back again on top since 2009 and went beyond superstar status. So my question is that why you call shah rukh as bigger star for 2 decades. Please explain
@indicine tell us most sucessful actors of 2000-2010 .Films, hits, average , popular, followers etc.
Babaji not kkk it was Hindustan ki kasam that held the record breaking opening day that era. Both Salman and Ajay 2000s were not commendable but they bounced back. Salman movie contents scripts was poor Ajay involved himself in art movies way back 97. It paid not necessarily on box office collections of 2000s but it gave him fame as a versatility superstar and national awArd winner. No matter how we dislike Ajay he is in my opinion an acting guru much much better than Srk
@indicine,you did injustice by adding salman’s flops/below average/above averages into ‘hit’ list.
While you didn’t added many HITS OF KING KHAN like RAM JAANE,YES BOSS which were clearly CLEAN HITS.
so nobody is going to care about these type of fake list now.
@navin,just like how everybody knew KING KHAN was ahead of amir in last decade, still @indicine trickily made him no.1 of last decade similarly they made salman’s name for 90’s.
Anyhow you’ll manipulate with the verdict?????
salman has clearly 24 hits at best.they rises 5 below average/flop into hit list, wow be happy with your fake list.
90’S NO.1 ACTOR—-KING KHAN
LAST DECADE NO.1 ACTOR—-KING KHAN
they are simply using trick to show salman, amir in 90’s,last decade respectively above KING KHAN because they want to show this decade’s above ranking star in last two decades.
Do manipulation,do whatever,KING KHAN will remain THE BIGGEST ACTOR OF THE GENERATION.
Indicine is it true Ajay Devgn is the youngest actor ever to bag best actor debut age 17 18? I like Ajay and he is Salman Sir friends. In those list I observed only Akki has neve been in top 3 actors of any of the decades 90s 2000s. 2010s. Also Akki is the only one who never opened 30 crs even after 3 decades.
Salman Ajay Aamir / SRK. Real superstars of bollywood. Salman topping but respect to Srk too
What we have known for a long time is being confirmed right now; that Salman was, is, and will always remain number one Superstar! Unfortunate that people are realizing what has always been true. At least they know now! Love you Salman to the infinity! Xoxo
When Ajay was competing with the Khan’s and was the 3rd ranked superstar of 90s where was Rohit Shetty? hahaha I think Akki fans will answer that.
Proud to be a Salman Sir Fan always
Where’s Sunny Makkiholic who questions Ajay never been top 5 in anything? seeing him at no 3 will only make him hate Ajay more.
@Navin well said on Joker boy excuse givers
Mega superstar SALMAN KHAN! He ruled from the beginning. Srk ruled only when bhai stop being serious about his career like in the 2000’s. Now that he is serious again u can see he has taken back his crown as numero uno NUMBER ONE!
Saif and Suniel are suppose to replace Akshay in that least. seriously man Check Sunil Shetty successful movies in 90s. I always say remove 2007 multicasts year of Akki and then he is nobody. Fact is Fact
90s only 1 or 2 movies of Akki as solo lead was clean hit.
Come on guys stop chatting like kids. This is a very important analysis and am okay with it. What is the point bringing Akshay Sir and Ajay name here? Why can’t we act mature sometimes. It’s an established fact thAt both Akshay and Ajay are the next important superstars after khans. What is gain pointing fingers to each other? All of them had a successful career nothing to prove again one was ahead of the another in a particular decade the other ahead another decade and this decade both are doing very well. Instead of doing fan wars why not praise both for being in the khan generations 3 decades back and still today they are considered the non Khan superstars. Grow up guys.
Babaji all those superstars have all gave in historical opening day Not only Akshay. Stop finding excuses. Don’t create hatred for Sir I am also a big fan of him. Has he done any 30 cr opening like the rest in today’s era?
Salman is star of 90s
not yet
now only SRK
In 1990s Anil kapoor, sunny deol, govinda, Sunjay dutt and Jackie shroff are bigger star than akshya Kumar. And where is amit ji @indicine?
I think the title of the article should be most successful current bollywood actors in 1990s not most successful bollywood actors of 1990s.
U left govinda hahahh this article mean nothing without him…. Shola n shabnam
Aankhen. Coolie no 1 hasseena maan jayegi raja babu many more…
Nice comment

this article is totally unacceptableand ridiculous… nw u r trying to undermine the superamacy of other actors …plzz delete it and publish when will u have data for govinda sunny n sanjay dutt .. i m sure all of them were ahead of at least amir khan n govinda is sure for no 1 or 2 position….. u found data for akshay n ajay bt u culdnt found for govinda …. isnt it suprising… i hope u will publish again with fresh data .one more thing why sud we beleive ur data ??????????? did u include kuch kuch hota hai collection for salman ??????……i stopped following few sites because of biased reporting i feel indicine sud improve ….
if u dont have data dont publish wrong news …. wt do u wanna say there were no govinda sunny or sunjay … hw will ppl understand the craze for sanju after 3 superhit … sajan sadak n khalnayak …. amir will nt be in top 5 if u include all of them … dont misgide next generation ….otherwise u will lose ur relevance only coz their are many source of information
n 1990 Govinda starred in the cult classic, Awaargi, with Anil Kapoor and Meenakshi Sheshadri. Swarg and Maha Sangram co-starring Vinod Khanna, Aditya Pancholi and Madhuri Dixit were also successful. In 1992 he appeared in Zulm Ki Hukumat, an Indian version of The Godfather, and David Dhawan’s Shola Aur Shabnam. The following year Govinda and Dhawan made Aankhen, the highest-grossing film of 1993. He appeared in 17 Dhawan films, most comedies: Taaqatwar (1989), Swarg (1990), Shola Aur Shabnam (1992), Aankhen (1993), Raja Babu (1994), Coolie No. 1 (1995), Saajan Chale Sasural (1996), Banarasi Babu (1997), Deewana Mastana (1997), Hero No. 1 (1997), Bade Miyan Chote Miyan (1998) and Haseena Maan Jaayegi (1999). The actor sang in some of his films: “Meri Pant Bhi Sexy” in Dulaara and “Gori Gori” in Shola Aur Shabnam. Dhawan and other directors cast him with actresses such as Karishma Kapoor, Juhi Chawla and Raveena Tandon during the decade.
Govinda was the most entertaining actor of 90’s. All award shows came with special category of best actor popular b,coz of Govinda. Main awards were purchased by SRK. All Salman fans must be aware that according to him Govind is the best actor of all time.
only let down for Bhai in his career is the period from 2000-2009 Where he did movies for his family & friends without giving much importance to script, Plus various controversies give him the tag of Bad Boy of bollywood still he made grand Comeback and giving Blockbuster’s and ATBB’s since 2010….I never saw such type of comeback from any superstar, Bhai was always the biggest Megastar with most loyal fanbase….it’s just a matter of phase where everything went wrong for Bhai but now In this decade, Nobody has guts to match him he is Ruling like a Emperor !!!!
