IndicineLBO Update: Industry awaits Baahubali 2 and Half Girlfriend

A lot has changed in the last couple of weeks since our last update. A quick round up: Badrinath Ki Dulhania has emerged as the biggest box office success of 2017. It’s the biggest ROI (return-on-investment) hit of the year and the second highest grosser of 2017 – behind Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees. Our prediction of 115 crore was accurate. Anushka Sharma’s Phillauri struggled at the box office, failing to even surpass her 2015 adult-rated film ‘NH10’. It’ll finish with lifetime business of around 23 crore. Naam Shabana did fairly well in its first weekend, but the trend over the weekend has been poor. Even the Ram Navami holiday hasn’t helped. Reliance Entertainment is likely to lose around 30% of their investment on the film. The big news was the clash between Shah Rukh Khan’s untitled film with Imtiaz Ali and Akshay Kumar’s Toilet: Ek Prem Katha. It’s a big weekend but a lot will now depend on the content of the two films. The big release this month is going to be ‘Baahubali 2’ which is expected to set the all-India box office on fire. A 30 crore plus opening for the Hindi version alone cannot be ruled. A 25 crore plus opening looks almost a certainty at this point in time. We expect ‘Baahubali 2’ to be the first 200 crore grosser of the year. The first film did not get a big initial, but managed to survive the onslaught of even a massive film like ‘Bajrangi Bhaijaan’. If the second part is anywhere close to as good as the first film, ‘Baahubali 2’ will shatter every single existing box office record in India. The other big release is ‘Half Girlfriend’ in May. The film is based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel, has Mohit Suri as director and the star-cast is good too with Arjun Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor playing the lead roles. It’s expected to have one of the best music albums of the year, which does add tremendous value to a romantic film. There are other factors in favour of ‘Half Girlfriend’ too; it’s the first major Hindi release after ‘Badrinath Ki Dulhania’, it has a similar release to ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns’ which also released just before the conclusion of the IPL and the last week before Ramzan should also increase the footfalls of the muslim audience in theatres (like Ek Villain). Overall, before the Salman Khan juggernaut ‘Tubelight’ towards the end of June – ‘Baahubali 2: The Conclusion’ and ‘Half Girlfriend’ are the two major releases. There’s ‘Raabta’ too. We also have films like ‘Meri Pyaari Bindu’, ‘Sarkar 3’, ‘Noor’, ‘Begum Jaan’ and a few other lined up for release.

Shah Rukh Khan vs Akshay Kumar: Our Take

The box office clash between Shah Rukh Khan’s untitled film and Akshay Kumar’s Toilet Ek Prem Katha (Toilet:EPK) will be the talking point for the next few months. On paper, it looks one-sided. The untitled romantic film has a much bigger star cast with one of the biggest crowd-pullers in the industry (SRK), one of the most popular female stars (Anushka Sharma), well-known director (Imtiaz Ali), big budget and the music is expected to be a strong point too (Imtiaz-Pritam).

Badrinath Ki Dulhania set to be the 2nd biggest hit for Dharma Productions this decade

Badrinath Ki Dulhania will soon be the 2nd biggest hit of the decade for Dharma Productions after Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013). The Varun Dhawan – Alia Bhatt starrer joins other major grossers like Agneepath and 2 States. Badrinath Ki Dulhania will also be only the fifth 100 crore grosser for Dharma after Agneepath (first to cross 100), Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and 2 States.

Trapped Box Office Collections

Vikramaditya Motwane’s Trapped showed good growth in business over the weekend, but the starting point was so low that the film had little or no chance. For a film that was running on close to 2900 shows at multiplexes over the entire weekend, the occupancy on an average was less than 30 people per show.

Badrinath Ki Dulhania Collections: Unstoppable at the box office

Varun Dhawan’s Badrinath Ki Dulhania is proving to be unstoppable at the box office. Inspite of competition from new films like the Hollywood release ‘Beauty and The Beast’ and other Hindi films like Machine, Trapped and Aagaya Hero – Badrinath Ki Dulhania managed to collect more than all the other films combined on its second Friday.

The phenomenal rise of Alia Bhatt

In less than 5 years since her debut, Alia Bhatt has established herself as not only a popular star but also one of the best actresses in the industry today. A film like ‘Badrinath Ki Dulhania’ has come at the right time for her career too. Almost all her previous films were targeted mostly at the urban section of the audience, but ‘Badrinath Ki Dulhania’ is her first film that should extend her fan-base into smaller cities and towns of the country.

Varun Dhawan extends incredible box office run

With the success of ‘Badrinath Ki Dulhania’, Varun Dhawan extends his incredible run at the box office. The actor now has 8 back-to-back successful films, starting from the beginning of his career in 2012 to his latest release. In other words, the producers of his films have never lost money, which is a pretty big deal at the very beginning of a career. In fact, his biggest commercial disappointment was a big film like ‘Dilwale’ where the responsibility of the film’s success was on the shoulders of a much bigger star.

Badrinath Ki Dulhania Day 2 (Saturday) Box Office Collection Update

Shashank Khaitan’s Badrinath Ki Dulhania opened very well at the box office on Friday. It slowed down a little in the noon at some centres and picked up evening onwards to record the 3rd highest opening day total of 2017. The film, which has collected Rs 12.25 crore on Day 1, is only behind the collections of way more established stars like Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees – which was in a different league altogether inspite of clash with another big film and Akshay Kumar’s Jolly LLB 2 which is in around the same range as Badrinath Ki Dulhania.
